    No full text
The genus Lilium L. includes approximately 100 species distributed throughout the cold and temperate parts of the northern hemisphere. One of the best known of wild lilies is the martagon lily (L. martagon L.). Of all the lily species, it is distributed across the largest growing area – from western Portugal through Europe and Asia. To evaluate the natural habitat of the martagon lily, research was carried out in locations at Aizkraukle, Ventspils, Kuldiga and Tukums region in Latvia. Research results indicate that diversity in genotypes varies according to location and distribution. The individuals of each biotope were characterized by stable inherited traits: color, shape and flower diameter, stem length and bulb color. The color of flowers was basically consistent, but there were variations in intensity from pale to bright violet-pink. Spotting was also extremely variable, ranging from a few small spots in the centre to spotting that covered the entire flower to the tips of the tepals. Diameter of flower varied between of 3.5 to 6.0 cm. The height of these plants varied up to 114-130 cm. The flowering time was from mid June to the middle of July and seeds ripen in September. Wild martagon lilies found in these regions were growing in calcareous soils among shrubs in river valleys and semi-shaded deciduous forests. Bulbs were growing to about 10 to 20 cm under the ground

Multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) is widely used to solve various decision problems through alternative evaluation. MCDA methods can be used in every field that can define a problem, alternatives and criteria. However, finding the appropriate method can influence the results, in this research five MCDA methods have been tested on the renewable energy sector in Latvia to find the best alternative. The main results showed that TOPSIS, VIKOR and PROMETHEE-GAIA have similar priority selection and the highest ranking was selected for hydropower plant, but MULTIMOORA and COPRAS results were beneficial to Solar PV

    Piloting the eBig3: A Triple-screen e-Learning Approach

In this report / study we present our recent progress on multi-screen e-learning development entitled eBig3. It is a new approach to technology supported education encouraging involvement in lifelong learning education. The approach effectively integrates the popular technologies of television, Internet, and mobile phones. Here we present the results of ten course pilots offered in 2013 with the eBig3 media formats. The target group for the courses was the general public. And the three-pronged approach worked; the response showed a radical increase of registration for eBig3 courses compared to traditional registration for online courses. The course delivery formats were also more successful than blended learning formats. Our results showed that the new approach significantly increased the availability of eCourses and that users felt encouraged to stay the duration of the course. Moreover, the results indicated that the approach helped to close the gap between expectations and actual achievements for life-long-learning in general

Funding Information: The work was supported by the National Research Programme in Medicine 2006–2009, project No. 8, “Modern approaches in early diagnostics, prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus and obesity-caused diseases”. This study was supported by grant No. 07-VP-8 from the Latvian Council of Science.Obese metabolic syndrome (MS) patients were categorised into three groups: 44 with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)(D); 20 with T2DM and coronary artery disease (CAD) (DC), and 26 with MS alone (M). Eighteen healthy subjects were selected as controls (C). Insulin resistance (IR) was assessed by HOMA-IR. Adiponectin, tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), and interleukin-8 (IL-8) concentrations were measured by xMAP technology. Endothelin-1 (ET-1) was determined by ELISA. We used laser Doppler imaging for evaluating cutaneous endothelium-dependent vasodilatation in the hand. D and DC groups had significantly elevated IR compared with M or C group (P < 0.01). TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8, MCP-1 and ET-1 levels in DC were significantly elevated compared with other groups (P < 0.001). IL-6, IL-8, MCP-1 and ET-1 in D group were higher than those in C group (P < 0.05). TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8, MCP-1 and ET-1 concentrations were correlated with HOMA-IR indexes and adiponectin levels. All patients had lower adiponectin concentrations than controls (P < 0.001), but there were no differences between the patient groups. Only D and DC groups demonstrated a significant and similar decrease in LDI-Ach marker compared to C group (P < 0.001). LDI-Ach values were significantly correlated with HOMA-IR indexes and adiponectin levels (P < 0.001). Our findings show that obese MS patients have significantly increased HOMA-IR, TNF-α, IL-6, MCP-1 and IL-8 levels, decreased adiponectin concentration, and endothelial dysfunction, but the presence of T2DM and CAD in these patients is associated with more pronounced endothelial dysfunction and increased production of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines.publishersversionPeer reviewe

This article reports on the progress we have achieved as we continue to pilot new approaches using an eEcosystem that is based on a multi-screen concept to support e-learning. Here we recap our recent progress with the project JAUZI/eBig3 that is a multi-screen e-learning development. The approach effectively integrates the popular technologies of television, Internet, and mobile phones. It is a new way of using technology to support and encourage engagement in the lifelong learning process. Here we present the results of ten course pilots offered in 2013 with the eBig3-learning format as well as the teacher training courses offered by the MII project (Modern Education of Interests) in 2014. The target group of eBig3 courses was general public, but for the MII courses it was teachers. We compared the user behavior data from the various presented courses with the number of learning objects to the number of users. The normalised curves of the user behavior data graph are a valuable source for data analysis to teachers and course developers because they profile effectiveness of course content and delivery approach in respect to target group expections. Our observations about the variance in user behavior distribution between mandatory and optional courses can be used as a potential quality indicator for the success of eLearning courses

In this report we want to map out our progress on design science research project ETM that creates a new approach to lifelong learning by the smart integration of the popular technologies Internet, mobile phones, and television [1,2,3]. By studying the results of the target group behaviour as they simultaneously use of these technologies, we designed the learning approach eBig3 that is based on user usage patterns. The evaluation of the initial delivery of the courses confirms the interest of the target group and their commitment to continue-on to pass the courses
