High-Affinity Phosphate-Binding Protein (PBP) For Phosphorous Recovery: Proof of Concept Using Recombinant \u3cem\u3eEscherichia coli\u3c/em\u3e
Phosphorus (P) is a critical, non-renewable nutrient; yet excess discharges can lead to eutrophication and deterioration of water quality. Thus, P removal from water must be coupled with P recovery to achieve sustainable P management. P-specific proteins provide a novel, promising approach to recover P from water. Bacterial phosphate-binding proteins (PBPs) are able to effectively remove phosphate, achieving extremely low levels in water (i.e. 0.015 mg-P L−1). A prerequisite of using PBP for P recovery, however, is not only removal, but also controlled P release, which has not yet been reported. Phosphate release using recombinant PBP-expressing Escherichia coli was explored in this study. Escherichia coli was genetically modified to overexpress PBP in the periplasmic space. The impacts of ionic strength, temperature and pH on phosphate release were assessed. PBP-expressed E. coli demonstrated consistently superior ability to adsorb more phosphate from liquid and release more phosphate under controlled conditions relative to negative controls (unexpressed PBP E. coli and E. coli K12). Lower pH (3.8), higher temperature (35ºC) and higher ionic strength (100 mM KCl) facilitated increased phosphate release, providing a maximum of 2.1% P recovery within 3 h. This study provides proof of concept of the feasibility of using PBP to recover P
Faces of modernity in the architecture of the Peronist State, 1943-1955
Within the context of Peronist expectations regarding culture, the article examines three cases of architectural and urban projects that displayed various kinds of articulation in terms of promotional policies, state institutions, intervening technology, the urban aspects involved, and the architectural aesthetics proposed. The works are interpreted - with respect to their aesthetic forms and images and the political content they transmit - as materializations of the new order envisaged by Peronism. Each of the case studies highlights different visualizations or aspects of this new order. In conceptual terms, all of the characteristics manifested by Peronist cultural production were also observable in the projects of inter-war dictatorships, especially those of Italian fascism. Clearly, given the period in which Peronism came to power, it is anachronistic to locate the architectural programmes which it hosted within the political categories of 'inter-war dictatorship' or even 'fascism'. Nevertheless, seen through the lens of these two categories, it can be shown that the ethos of Peronism falls within the framework of the fascist era, due to its promotion of grandiose visionary projects for national renewal expressed through the transformation of the built environment on a scale characteristic of the two fascist regimes. Such projects mythically elevated Perón and Eva Perón to the level of leaders of the Argentinian people, whom they both saw as an organic entity, socially harmonious, rooted in the history of the nation and, in international terms, decidedly placed the nation on the road to the "third position" pioneered by fascist movements before 1945 in which tradition and modernity were reconciled in a form of modernism termed by Roger Griffin 'rooted modernism'.Fil: Ballent, Anahi.
Anthropogenic particles in natural sediment sinks: Microplastics accumulation in tributary, beach and lake bottom sediments of Lake Ontario, North America
Surface waters of the Great Lakes are known to be contaminated with microplastics, however, microplastics in the sediments of the region are poorly documented. This study provides a baseline of micro- and macro-plastics contamination in nearshore, tributary and beach sediments of Lake Ontario and the upper St. Lawrence River. Microplastics were quantified and characterized by morphology and composition using visual identification and Raman spectroscopy. Microplastics are most concentrated in nearshore sediments in the vicinity of urban and industrial regions. Concentrations in Humber Bay and Toronto Harbour consistently measured \u3e 500 particles per kg dry sediment, and maximum concentrations of ~28,000 particles per kg dry sediment were quantified at Etobicoke Creek. Sourced from consumer and industrial activity, abundant plastics in Lake Ontario coastal environments are unnatural persistent contaminants warranting urgent action for the protection of benthic fauna and ecosystem health
Taxonomy and zoogeography of the mesozoic cytherurid ostracoda from West-Central Argentina
The status of thirty four species of the cytheroidean ostracod family Cytheruridae from the Neuquén Basin, west-central Argentina is reviewed. These species belong to the following nine genera: Eucytherura Müller, ranging in this study from Pliensbachian to Valanginian and represented by fourteen species; Kangarina Coryell and Fields, Aalenian-Bajocian, with a single species; Acrocythere Neale, Hauterivian, one species; Paranotacythere Bassiouni, Berriasian, two species; Procytherura Whatley, Pliensbachian to Hauterivian, twelve species; Cytheropteron Sars, Aalenian-Bajocian, one species: Eocytheropteron Alexander, Hauterivian, one species; Paradoxorhyncha Chapman, Aalenian-Bajocian, one species; and Paracytheridea Müller, Berriasian, one species. Of the three subfamilies of the Cytheruridae, the Cytherurinae, with thirty species are by far the most numerous and abundant throughout the study. The other two subfamilies, the Cytheropterinae are represented by three species and the Paracytherideinae by a single species of the nominative genus. Several of the species are very widely distributed geographically and have, for example, also been recorded from Europe; others indicate close links with South Africa and Australia. The stratigraphical ranges of certain genera have been extended as a result of this study. For example, Kangarina has not previously been recorded below the Cretaceous. The Cytheruridae are clearly the most diverse cytheroidean ostracodes in the Mesozoic of the Neuquén Basin and are more diverse than all other groups of ostracodes combined. Four new species, Eucytherura tessae, Eucytherura yunga, Procytherura amygdala and Eocytheropteron immodicus are described. Eucytherura guillaumeae nom. nov. for Eucytherura tuberculata Brenner and Oertli and Eucytherura paranuda nom. nov. for Eucytherura nuda (Brand) are proposed.

The 1950’s in the architectural archive in Argentine: a decade cut in two
This article analyzes actions and debates in the Argentine architectural field in order to characterize the decade on the basis of that record. In this sense, the article considers an image proposed by contemporaries, as a decade cut in two by politics, that is Peronism and the new order following its overthrow by the military coup of the Revolución Libertadora in 1955. That year is adopted as a starting point to analyze discourses and proposals aimed at renovation, comparing them to the lines of continuity maintained with the previous proposals of Peronism, continuities that at the time were not problematized, or simply ignored. The paper argues that this renewal of the second part of the decade was a product of both the new political-cultural climate established after the military coup and the continuities with the state proposals of Peronism. In order to develop this idea, three themes of the decade are chosen to evaluate continuities and ruptures: the models of professional practice, the fields of mass housing and planning, and the debates related to aesthetics, politics and culture in architecture.Fil: Ballent, Anahi. Engineers, Entrepreneurs and the State: the Formation of the Argentine Chamber of Construction, 1936-1943
The Argentine Chamber of Construction (CAC), a business organization of great power and relevance in the Argentine economy in general and the construction sector in particular, was founded on February 6, 1936. It originated from the Argentine Center of Engineers (CAI), promoted by professional associates in charge of sixteen national firms, several of them public works contractors. In 1939 it obtained its legal status, having grown already to include many more associates; and in 1942 it severed its direct link with the professional associations, which at that time it saw as a brake on its growth. This paper proposes to investigate the link between the CAC and the CAI, arguing that it facilitated negotiations between the Chamber and the State, on the basis of the previous history of the Center, which since its creation in 1895 had cultivated intense links with the state apparatus, and especially with the Ministry of Public Works (MOP).Fil: Ballent, Anahi.
