    A cryptic RNA-binding domain mediates Syncrip recognition and exosomal partitioning of miRNA targets

    Exosomal miRNA transfer is a mechanism for cell-cell communication that is important in the immune response, in the functioning of the nervous system and in cancer. Syncrip/hnRNPQ is a highly conserved RNA-binding protein that mediates the exosomal partition of a set of miRNAs. Here, we report that Syncrip's amino-terminal domain, which was previously thought to mediate protein-protein interactions, is a cryptic, conserved and sequence-specific RNA-binding domain, designated NURR (N-terminal unit for RNA recognition). The NURR domain mediates the specific recognition of a short hEXO sequence defining Syncrip exosomal miRNA targets, and is coupled by a non-canonical structural element to Syncrip's RRM domains to achieve high-affinity miRNA binding. As a consequence, Syncrip-mediated selection of the target miRNAs implies both recognition of the hEXO sequence by the NURR domain and binding of the RRM domains 5′ to this sequence. This structural arrangement enables Syncrip-mediated selection of miRNAs with different seed sequences. © 2018 The Author(s)

    Influence of eco-materials on Indoor Air Quality

    A growing strategy to reduce the energy consumption of buildings involves a combination of increased air tightness and high levels of insulation. However, an undesirable consequence of this approach is a deterioration of the Indoor Air Quality and accumulation of airborne pollutants, resulting from the reduction in ventilation. The chemical nature and concentration of indoor air pollutants is dependent on the building materials and activities of the occupiers. Recent studies have raised awareness of the effect of Indoor Air Quality on the perceived comfort levels, health and well-being of humans. This paper investigates the role of commercially available natural building materials including lime mortars, natural fibres and wood panels on the Indoor Air Quality. Initially the emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from building materials were identified and measured. Subsequent tests then considered the adsorption and re-emission behaviour of four VOCs; toluene, limonene, dodecane and formaldehyde. The significance of this paper lies in its demonstration that emissions are dependent on the chemical composition of building materials and the production process, whereas the adsorption/desorption characteristics are related to material microstructure and polarity of the VOCs. The results allow the performance of a construction material, in terms of its influence on indoor air quality, to be deduced from a knowledge of chemical composition and microstructure. This paper provides a new approach for assessing the influence of different building materials on indoor air quality when exposed to gaseous pollutants

    The Effectiveness of Urban Teacher Education Programs: Listening to the Voices of Cooperating Teachers

    The cooperating teacher has long been referred to as the most significant person in the education of teacher candidates. However, the voice of the cooperating teachers has been largely missing in teacher education evaluation research. Our study focused on obtaining feedback from the cooperating teachers about the effectiveness of our teacher education programs in emphasizing our college’s conceptual framework focused on social justice and equity. This mixed methods study utilized survey data from cooperating teachers over two academic years. The early childhood education (ECE) cooperating teachers gave significantly higher ratings to their programs than the middle secondary education (MSE) cooperating teachers. Cooperating teachers perceived extensive field experiences, effective supervisory support, and clear and consistent communication from faculty as a strength of the ECE programs. The MSE programs which were rated lower than the ECE programs were perceived as needing improvement in the structure of field experiences and in communication of expectations from the university

    Improvement of Indoor Air Quality by MDF panels containing walnut shells

    High levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and extremes of Relative Humidity (RH) commonly reduce indoor air quality with associated negative effects on human health and wellbeing. Interior materials are known to be one of the main contributors to poor indoor air quality. Notwithstanding, they can also act as a sink for airborne pollutants and excess moisture through adsorption. In this paper, we evaluate the ability of Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) modified with walnut shell to regulate RH, toluene, limonene, dodecane and formaldehyde. The physicochemical properties, including molecular size/shape, vapour pressure, polarity and boiling point of VOCs allowed them to represent a range of pollutants. Adsorption and desorption behaviour of MDF containing up to 15% walnut shell was evaluated in 2-L environmental chambers under dynamic conditions at 23 °C and 50% RH. The porous microstructure of the MDF and walnut shell and their chemical composition were analysed using SEM, XRD and FTIR. Compared to a control panel, walnut shell additions showed an improved ability to remove VOCs and formaldehyde from the indoor air and buffer humidity. Of particular significance was the irreversible sink effect of formaldehyde and dodecane. This was attributed to the porous surface of walnut shell increasing the specific surface area of the panel and thus its adsorption capacity. The improved capacity of buffer humidity also increased the ability to adsorb water soluble VOCs such as formaldehyde. This research provides for the first time significant evidence that walnut shell modified MDF can improve indoor air quality

    Capturing Debriefing and Enhancing Reflection within Simulated Clinical Learning Environments

    This article presents findings from an evaluation of a new A3-size learner notes sheet designed for use by healthcare students engaging in clinical simulation and clinical skills sessions. The notes sheet consists of an adapted form of the SBAR (situation, background, assessment, response) tool, whilst capturing post-simulation oral debriefing provided by a facilitator. Additionally, the Driscoll (2007)model is used to provide students with an opportunity to reflect on their engagement in clinical simulation. Two cohorts of students, who engaged in separate simulation sessions, completed the A3 sheet. The study featured 33 midwifery and 21 operating department practitioner (ODP) students undertaking a simulation. Documentary analysis was undertaken to identify the depth of reflective writing of both groups of students. Midwifery student participants reflected on their experiences of simulation at a slightly deeper level than their ODP counterparts. All students adhered to the structure of the notes sheet when receiving their briefing from the facilitator and when asked to write their reflective accounts. This study has sought to explore an under-researched area of clinical simulation: the extent to which healthcare students can utilise reflection when engaging with a clinical scenario within a simulated learning environment

    Air Quality in Oxfam Superadobe Community Building, Zaatari camp, Jordan

    In collaboration with Oxfam-Jordan, the University of Bath conducted air quality monitoring in a community centre in Zaatari refugee camp over one week in May 2018. Two buildings were monitored, a superadobe (sand bag) structure and a caravan. In addition to measurements of air quality outdoors.The monitoring consisted of two parts, airborne volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter (PM) suspended in the air. VOCs levels in both monitored buildings were much lower than the allowed limits in the UK, may be due to the high ventilation rate. Therefore, VOCs are not thought of to be of concern. On the other hand, PM concentrations were significantly higher than guidelines for daily exposure by WHO

    Health comorbidities and cognitive abilities across the lifespan in Down syndrome.

    BACKGROUND: Down syndrome (DS) is associated with variable intellectual disability and multiple health and psychiatric comorbidities. The impact of such comorbidities on cognitive outcomes is unknown. We aimed to describe patterns of physical health and psychiatric comorbidity prevalence, and receptive language ability, in DS across the lifespan, and determine relationships with cognitive outcomes. METHODS: Detailed medical histories were collected and cognitive abilities measured using standardised tests for 602 individuals with DS from England and Wales (age range 3 months to 73 years). Differences in prevalence rates between age groups and between males and females were determined using chi-squared or Fisher's exact tests. In adults, rates for psychiatric comorbidities were compared to expected population rates using standardised morbidity ratios (SMRs). Adapted ANCOVA functions were constructed to explore age and sex associations with receptive language ability across the lifespan, and regression analyses were performed to determine whether the presence of health comorbidities or physical phenotypes predicted cognitive abilities. RESULTS: Multiple comorbidities showed prevalence differences across the lifespan, though there were few sex differences. In adults, SMRs were increased in males and decreased in females with DS for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and anxiety. Further, SMRs were increased in both males and females with DS for dementia, autism, ADHD, and depression, with differences more pronounced in females for dementia and autism, and in males for depression. Across the lifespan, receptive language abilities increasingly deviated from age-typical levels, and males scored poorer than females. Only autism and epilepsy were associated with poorer cognitive ability in those aged 16-35 years, with no relationships for physical health comorbidities, including congenital heart defects. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate the prevalence of multiple comorbidities varies across the lifespan in DS, and in adults, rates for psychiatric comorbidities show different patterns for males and females relative to expected population rates. Further, most health comorbidities are not associated with poorer cognitive outcomes in DS, apart from autism and epilepsy. It is essential for clinicians to consider such differences to provide appropriate care and treatment for those with DS and to provide prognostic information relating to cognitive outcomes in those with comorbidities
