This study aimed to establish a mediated moderation model by investigating the effects of gender and year level in the relationship between Attitude towards Mathematics, Mathematics teaching efficacy and Mathematics achievement mediated by deep and surface approaches. Participants in this study were 319 second year and third year elementary education students enrolled in the second semester of school year 20132014.Study have shown that relationship between attitude and mathematics achievement was partially mediated by surface approach while mathematics teaching on mathematics achievement fully mediated by surface and deep approaches. There was a direct relationship between year level and mathematics achievement. This indicated that students on the higher year level tend to have a higher achievement in mathematics. Furthermore, year level interacted positively the effect of mathematics teaching on mathematics achievement. This means that students in the higher year level more likely intensified the effect of mathematics teaching on mathematics achievement while those in the lower level weakened the effect. On the other hand, in the coding of gender, 0 and 1 assigned to female and male respectively, the effect of the interaction of gender and mathematics teaching on mathematics achievement was fully mediated by surface approach. This can be inferred that female intensified the effect of mathematics teaching on surface approach with an effect of surface approach to math achievement is negative. Hence, male education students tend to strengthen the effects of mathematics teaching on mathematics achievement while female education students weakened the effects. Keywords: Mediated moderation effects, attitude towards mathematics, mathematics teaching efficacy, mathematics achievement, Structural Equation Modelin

The Judas Iscariot Syndrome and Its Implication for Accounting Educators

    Get PDF
The study is qualitative and applied the appreciative inquiry approach to address the "Judas Iscariot syndrome" of misappropriation and wrong assumptions among accountants and treasurers. It is believed that Seventh-day Adventist universities integrate faith and learning in their educational curriculum to cause a behavioral change. There seems to be a gap between knowledge, values, and the practice of accounting and financial management. From the biblical perspective, Judas Iscariot was the treasurer among the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ, but he was said to be a thief (see John 12:4-6). This study utilized a semi-structured, self-developed, open-ended questions in interviewing ten accounting educators at Valley View University, Ghana from the Oyibi and Techiman campuses and based on the triangulation method and the 5-D cycle approach of appreciative inquiry (Define, Discover, Dream, Design, and Delivery). The study revealed that in order to generate positive change, self-discipline, truthfulness, and conscience to duty must be inculcated into the current accounting education to make the student dream to have contentment. The achievement of contentment is based on a design of biblical and ethical discussion, sharing of examples and personal experiences, truth writing and telling, and audiovisual presentation. The study recommends that accounting educators must live an exemplary life, mentor students, use ethical simulations and debates to instill self-discipline, truthfulness, and conscience to duty. A roadmap of Christian Behavior Change for Accounting Educators is developed.

This paper made use of 295 school administrators coming from 12 different colleges and universities operated by the Seventh-Day Adventist Church within Asia-Pacific Division. The statistical test used in the analysis was Hierarchical Linear Modeling. Existence of multilevel data is not accidental and hence cannot be ignored. Discounting it, may lead to overlooking any group effects and therefore nullifying many traditional techniques of statistical procedure used to investigate inter-relationship among variables. Applying a 2-Level Hierarchical Linear Modeling on administrators as respondents in a school level and considering years of service, the results were as follows: The effect of Years of Service on Total Quality Management (TQM) was not statistically significant ( =.0133, t=1.133, p>.05), indicating that the mean TQM according to years of service did not differ significantly. Organizational Culture, likewise, did not affect TQM ( =2.7515, t=-.855, p>.05). This meant that administrators have the same organizational culture regardless of school level. School mean ( =0.3501, t=1.553, p>.05) was not statistically significant to TQM indicating that the school mean did not influence organizational culture on TQM. Similarly, the gamma coefficient of the interaction of school mean and organizational culture was not significant ( =.03274, t=.810, p>.05) indicating no significant effect in the relationship between organizational culture and TQM.  Thus, Organizational Culture impacts TQM, regardless of SDA school location within Asia-Pacific Region

Some people have better psychological wellbeing than others; thus, they are more functioning individuals. On the other hand, working students are confronted with a variety of challenges that may affect their psychological wellbeing. The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship of social support and spirituality to the psychological wellbeing of working students. This descriptive-correlational research utilized 302 conveniently sampled college working students from three sectarian institutions in Luzon, Philippines. An expert-validated four-part questionnaire was used to gather data. Data were analyzed using Predictive Analysis Software (PASW). Based on the findings, the respondents had a low social support yet, they were highly spiritual. They also had a moderately high psychological wellbeing. Social support and spirituality were significantly related to all the dimensions of the psychological wellbeing of the respondents. On the other hand, there was no significant difference on all the dimensions of psychological wellbeing when age, sex, and length of stay were considered. Moreover, dormitory dean’s support was a significant predictor of the respondents’ psychological well-being in terms of self-acceptance, purpose in life, environmental mastery, and positive relations with others while support from friends/peers was a significant predictor of the respondents’ psychological wellbeing in terms of purpose in life. Finally, spirituality was a significant predictor of the respondents’ psychological wellbeing in terms of self-acceptance, personal growth, purpose in life, environmental mastery, autonomy, and positive relations with others regardless of age, sex, and length of stay. It is recommended that a replicate study be done among non-working students and/or non-sectarian institutions

The study aimed to determine the relationship of capability and quality of products in relation to sustainability of subcontract electronics manufacturing companies in the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. The respondents’ profile such as plant location and years of operations were considered as moderator variables. Data from 46 subcontract electronics manufacturing companies were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.  Furthermore, bootstrapping procedure was used due to the limited number of electronics subcontract manufacturing companies who participated in this study. The study shows that the subcontract electronics manufacturing companies were all capable in terms of the control processes and packages classification; and highly capable in terms of production capacity. The quality of products in terms of goods and services was all perceived to be good.  Company respondents were perceived to be high in economic and social sustainability and very high in terms of environmental sustainability.  Further results revealed that packaging, production capacity, consumer specification, and reliability testing are significant predictors of the economic sustainability. It also shows that control processes, reliability testing, and inspection and quality were significant predictors of social sustainability. Customer specification and reliability testing are significant predictors of environmental sustainability.  Overall, the result showed that production capacity, consumer specification, and inspection and quality are the significant predictors of the sustainability.  CAPAQUALISUS model for sustainable subcontract electronics manufacturing companies was developed from this study

The institutional learning outcomes are designed to guide the university-developed students’ learning outcomes and to help shape their decision-making processes. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, institutional learning outcomes can be affected. This study investigates Latent Class classifications of Professional Competence, Active Faith, Selfless Service, Social Responsibility, and Balanced Lifestyle (PASSB) using validated questionnaires. This survey was conducted to 396 graduating college students in a faith-based university during the academic year 2019-2020. The SPSS version 25 was used to conduct the latent class analysis (LCA). The PASSB was designed primarily to group the respondents into two latent classes. Latent Classes 1 and 2 consist of respondents whose PASSB were not developed and developed respectively during their stay in the university. Professional Competence (PA), Active Faith (AF), Selfless Service (SR), Social Responsibility (SR), and Balanced Lifestyle (BA) have respectively 14, 12, 6, 8, and 14 items. The results show that 17.3% of students whose Professional Competence was not developed and 82.7% were developed during their stay in the university. A considerable proportion of graduating seniors whose Active faith (13.6%), Selfless Service (86.3%), Social Responsibility (84.2%), and Balanced lifestyle (24.5%) were not developed upon exiting the portal of the university. It is recommended to review the institutional outcomes considering the new normal. Further study is recommended since a higher proportion of graduating students have not developed Selfless Service and Social Responsibility upon exiting the portal of the university. The Covid-19 pandemic might have contributed to these results. Accurate and reliable health information is critical for students' ability to thrive and overall well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, research on online health information-seeking behavior and thriving in a non-western country and during a pandemic is scarce. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between online health information seeking behavior (OHISB) and the thriving quotient (TQ). The researchers enrolled 830 males and females from randomly selected universities in the Philippines. The self-constructed Online Health Seeking Information Behavior (OHSIB-12) and the modified Thriving Quotient (TQ-30) were used as valid and reliable research instruments. This study revealed that the majority of university students had meager to high levels of TQ subcomponents and an acceptable level of OHSIB. Correlation analyses revealed a positive correlation between online health information seeking behavior and the components of the thriving quotient. Developing a healthy online information search can influence students to make healthier choices, thereby improving their sense of well-being and increasing their chances of thriving in an uncertain world. It was recommended that students receive proper guidance from educational and health authorities regarding their OHSIB. Keywords: thriving quotient, online health information, pandemi

Effects of Online Health Information Seeking Behavior on Academic Determination as Mediated by Mental Toughness Confidence Clustered by Academic Year Level: A Multilevel Analysis

    No full text
Multilevel analysis has become one of the most extensively used means to investigate ways by which variables are affecting each other. Multilevel analysis is useful for data that are hierarchical in nature. Thus, this study employs multilevel mediation methods since data is fully nested. This also utilizes 813 college students participating from selected educational institutions in the Philippines during the academic year 2020-2021, with ages 18 years old and above and with academic level from the first year to the fifth year. It focuses on mental toughness as a mediator and investigates why academic determination would be affected by online health information-seeking behavior at the individual level and at different academic year levels using multilevel mediation analysis. The results of the study showed that the within-effects of both direct and indirect effects of the structural model are significant at the α = .01 level. This means that on the individual level (or level 1), mental toughness confidence is partially mediating the effects of online health-seeking behavior on the academic determination. However, when between-effects are considered, both direct and indirect effects were found to be not significant. This implies that when respondents are clustered by academic year level (level 2), both direct and indirect effects are not significant. Hence even across academic year levels, mental toughness confidence is partially mediating the influence of online health-seeking behavior on the academic determination.
