    On the muon neutrino mass

    During the runs of the PS 179 experiment at LEAR of CERN, we photographed an event of antiproton-Ne absorption, with a complete pi+ -> mu+ ->e+ chain. From the vertex of the reaction a very slow energy pi+ was emitted. The pi+ decays into a mu+ and subsequently the mu+ decays into a positron. At the first decay vertex a muon neutrino was emitted and at the second decay vertex an electron neutrino and a muon antineutrino. Measuring the pion and muon tracks and applying the momentum and energy conservation and using a classical statistical interval estimator, we obtained an experimental upper limit for the muon neutrino mass: m_nu < 2.2 MeV at a 90% confidence level. A statistical analysis has been performed of the factors contributing to the square value of the neutrino mass limit.Comment: 18 pages, 5 eps figure

    Aging society, health and the environment

    Both environmental quality and health care expenditure are determinants of health and life expectancy, but the support for them appears to be different according to the electors' age, with a relatively larger support for health expenditure among the elderly as it is generally effective on a shorter horizon than environmental maintenance. With population aging, the political support for health care expenditure is then self-reinforcing. We cast this issue in an overlapping generations model with endogenous longevity, where lifespan depends on health care expenditure and environmental quality. We compare the long run outcomes for health care expenditure, environmental quality, lifespan, consumption and capital accumulation of an economy where agents vote over health spending and environmental maintenance, with those chosen by a social planner who takes into account also the welfare of future generations. The role played by other factors, such as the propensity for smoothing consumption or the degree of annuity markets, is also highlighted.     Omega and eta meson production in p+p reactions at E_{kin} = 3.5 GeV

    We report on the exclusive production of omega and eta mesons in p+p reactions at 3.5 GeV beam kinetic energy. Production cross sections, angular distributions and Dalitz plots of both mesons were determined. Moreover, the relative contribution of the N(1535) resonance in eta production at this energy was evaluated. We conclude that eta mesons produced via N(1535) exihibit an isotropic angular distribution, whereas those produced directly show a strong anisotropic distribition. omega mesons show a slightly anisotropic angular distribition.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, proceedings of the 11th International Workshop on Meson Production, Properties and Interaction, Krak\'ow, Poland, 10 - 15 June 201

    Viscous Taylor droplets in axisymmetric and planar tubes: from Bretherton's theory to empirical models

    The aim of this study is to derive accurate models for quantities characterizing the dynamics of droplets of non-vanishing viscosity in capillaries. In particular, we propose models for the uniform-film thickness separating the droplet from the tube walls, for the droplet front and rear curvatures and pressure jumps, and for the droplet velocity in a range of capillary numbers, CaCa, from 10410^{-4} to 11 and inner-to-outer viscosity ratios, λ\lambda, from 00, i.e. a bubble, to high viscosity droplets. Theoretical asymptotic results obtained in the limit of small capillary number are combined with accurate numerical simulations at larger CaCa. With these models at hand, we can compute the pressure drop induced by the droplet. The film thickness at low capillary numbers (Ca<103Ca<10^{-3}) agrees well with Bretherton's scaling for bubbles as long as λ<1\lambda<1. For larger viscosity ratios, the film thickness increases monotonically, before saturating for λ>103\lambda>10^3 to a value 22/32^{2/3} times larger than the film thickness of a bubble. At larger capillary numbers, the film thickness follows the rational function proposed by Aussillous \& Qu\'er\'e (2000) for bubbles, with a fitting coefficient which is viscosity-ratio dependent. This coefficient modifies the value to which the film thickness saturates at large capillary numbers. The velocity of the droplet is found to be strongly dependent on the capillary number and viscosity ratio. We also show that the normal viscous stresses at the front and rear caps of the droplets cannot be neglected when calculating the pressure drop for Ca>103Ca>10^{-3}

    Rough Set Based Approach for IMT Automatic Estimation

    Carotid artery (CA) intima-media thickness (IMT) is commonly deemed as one of the risk marker for cardiovascular diseases. The automatic estimation of the IMT on ultrasound images is based on the correct identification of the lumen-intima (LI) and media-adventitia (MA) interfaces. This task is complicated by noise, vessel morphology and pathology of the carotid artery. In a previous study we applied four non-linear methods for feature selection on a set of variables extracted from ultrasound carotid images. The main aim was to select those parameters containing the highest amount of information useful to classify the image pixels in the carotid regions they belong to. In this study we present a pixel classifier based on the selected features. Once the pixels classification was correctly performed, the IMT was evaluated and compared with two sets of manual-traced profiles. The results showed that the automatic IMTs are not statistically different from the manual one

    A phenomenological analysis of antiproton interactions at low energies

    We present an optical potential analysis of the antiproton-proton interactions at low energies. Our optical potential is purely phenomenological, and has been parametrized on data recently obtained by the Obelix Collaboration at momenta below 180 MeV/c. It reasonably fits annihilation and elastic data below 600 MeV/c, and allows us for an evaluation of the elastic cross section and rho-parameter down to zero kinetic energy. Moreover we show that the mechanism that depresses antiproton-nucleus annihilation cross sections at low energies is present in antiproton-proton interactions too.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
