Shifts in U.S. Relative Wages: The Role of Trade, Technology, and Factor Endowments
This paper investigates three hypotheses to account for the observed shifts in U.S. relative wages of less educated workers compared to more educated workers during the period from 1967 to 1992: (1) increased import competition, (2) changes in the relative supplies of labor of different educational levels, and (3) changes in technology. Our analysis relies on a basic relationship of the standard general equilibrium trade model that relates changes in product prices to factor price changes and factor shares, together with information about changes in the composition of output and trade, within-industry factor use, and factor supplies. For the period from 1967 to 1973, we conclude that the relative increase in the supply of well-educated labor was the dominant economic force that narrowed the wage gap among workers of different educational levels. In the 1980s and early 1990s, however, the wage gap between more educated and less educated workers widened sharply, despite the continued relative increase in the supply of workers with more education. We conclude that increased import competition cannot account for the observed increase in inequality among the major education groups, although it could have been a contributory cause of the decrease in the relative wages of the least educated workers. Instead, we find support for technical progress that is saving of less educated labor and that is more rapid in some manufacturing sectors intensively using highly educated labor as the dominant force in widening the wage gaps among college-educated workers, workers with a completed high school education, and workers with 1–11 years of schooling. Finally, we use the Deardorff-Staiger model, which allows changes in the factor content of trade to reveal the effects of trade on relative factor prices. Diffraction-limited CCD imaging with faint reference stars
By selecting short exposure images taken using a CCD with negligible readout
noise we obtained essentially diffraction-limited 810 nm images of faint
objects using nearby reference stars brighter than I=16 at a 2.56 m telescope.
The FWHM of the isoplanatic patch for the technique is found to be 50

The reported use and effectiveness of Hypericum (St John’s wort) on affective symptoms in a depression self-help group
A recent meta-analysis suggested that Hypericum
perforatum (St John’s wort) is an effective
treatment for mild to moderate depression and
may have a superior side-effect profile to some
antidepressant drugs. The aim of this study was to
assess the use of herbal remedies in treating
depressive and anxiety symptoms, as reported by
members of the UK self-help organization
Depression Alliance using self-completed
questionnaires. More than 50% of the 452
respondents reported using Hypericum, onequarter
of whom also reported concurrent use of
traditional antidepressants. Most of the sample
reported sufficient symptoms for warranting a
diagnosis of major depression, with the majority
also describing symptoms suggestive of co-morbid
psychiatric conditions. One-half of the Hypericum
users experienced symptom improvement, which
for most occurred within the first 4 weeks of use.
Response was better for those with mild as
compared to severe symptoms and poorer for
those taking Hypericum alongside other
antidepressants. The responders were generally
older than non-responders. Adverse effects were
reported by one-quarter of users and were mostly
psychological in nature. This retrospective survey
indicated that use of herbal remedies was
common in this population. Although often helpful
in relieving symptoms, particularly in those with
mild depression, there is a risk of adverse events

The Australian Incident Monitoring Study in Intensive Care: AIMS-ICU. The development and evaluation of an incident reporting system in intensive care

Incidents and accidents can be caused by human error, by problems inherent in complex systems, or by a combination of these. Study objectives were to develop and evaluate an incident reporting system. A report form was designed eliciting a description of the incident, contextual information and contributing factors. Staff group sessions using open-ended questions, observations in the workplace and a review of earlier narratives were used to develop the report form. Three intensive care units participated in a two-month evaluation study. Feedback questionnaires were used to assess staff attitudes and understanding, project design and organization. These demonstrated a positive attitude and good understanding by more than 90% participants. Errors in communication, technique, problem recognition and charting were the predisposing factors most commonly chosen in the 128 incidents reported. On-board timeline validation and repair : a feasibility study
We report on the progress and outcome of a recent ESAfunded project (MMOPS) designed to explore the feasibility of on-board reasoning about payload timelines. The project sought to examine the role of on-board timeline reasoning and the operational context into which it would fit. We framed a specification for an on-board service that fits with existing practices and represents a plausible advance within sensible constraints on the progress of operations planning. We have implemented a prototype to demonstrate the feasibility of such a system and have used it to show how science gathering operations might be improved by its deployment
Paradoxical popups: Why are they hard to catch?
Even professional baseball players occasionally find it difficult to
gracefully approach seemingly routine pop-ups. This paper describes a set of
towering pop-ups with trajectories that exhibit cusps and loops near the apex.
For a normal fly ball, the horizontal velocity is continuously decreasing due
to drag caused by air resistance. But for pop-ups, the Magnus force (the force
due to the ball spinning in a moving airflow) is larger than the drag force. In
these cases the horizontal velocity decreases in the beginning, like a normal
fly ball, but after the apex, the Magnus force accelerates the horizontal
motion. We refer to this class of pop-ups as paradoxical because they appear to
misinform the typically robust optical control strategies used by fielders and
lead to systematic vacillation in running paths, especially when a trajectory
terminates near the fielder. In short, some of the dancing around when
infielders pursue pop-ups can be well explained as a combination of bizarre
trajectories and misguidance by the normally reliable optical control strategy,
rather than apparent fielder error. Former major league infielders confirm that
