    Accounting Doctoral Placement: A Geographic Analysis

    Accounting doctoral placement is described according to the geography of graduate employment. The results show that most U.S. programs provide graduates to schools in the state or the region. Since many doctoral programsprefer to place their graduates in high ranking research programs or in other doctoral schools, geographic concentration suggests many of them are serving a regional need, rather than placing graduates at the highest(research ranked) schools. Additionally, many programs have a relatively high level of foreign placements. Whether these foreign placements add to the prestige of the program is unknown, but they do not help combat the U.S.accounting doctoral shortage

    Parents' and Teachers' Beliefs About Kindergarten Readiness Skills

    The purpose of this study was to identify the beliefs of teachers and parents as to the skills necessary to insure that a child enters school ready to learn. Data was gathered using the CARES survey developed by Chaya Piotrkowski and colleagues (2001) that was given to parents and teachers in English and Spanish at an educational child care program in a Midwestern city. This program is an early learning center that provides an educational environment for children who come from families that are 100% or more of poverty and many of whom have the additional risk factor for school challenges by speaking only Spanish. The research goal for this study was to describe similarities and differences between the school readiness beliefs of teachers and low-income parents from the same educational program for young children. Parents and teachers only agreed on one item that both considered essential to success in school which was that a child is rested, well nourished and has good health care. Parent responses did not match the beliefs of parents a decade ago when several surveys given to parents showed that parents believed cognitive skills were the most important skills necessary for school success. For parents in this survey the mean for the social-emotional subscale was the highest and the understanding of school subscale had the second highest mean. The mean for the physical health and motor development subscale was the highest for teachers with the independence subscale second. There were many discrepancies between the beliefs of parents and teachers when rating the importance of the individual items. These discrepancies provide a starting point for discussion about expectations for children, teachers, parents, and the school curriculum.Department of Human Development and Family Scienc

    Identification of DeltaN isoform and polyadenylation site choice variants in molluscan p63/p73 -like homologues

Altered p53 and p73 protein expression observed in leukemic cells of mollusks suggests that these transcription factors might be involved in invertebrate cancers as well. Here, we fully characterize the mRNA of four novel p53-like variants in the bivalve mollusks Mytilus trossulus (bay mussel) and Mytilus edulis (blue mussel). These species, widely used for environmental assessment, develop a haemic neoplasia (leukemia) that is frequently fatal. The correlation between expression of p53 and its close relative p73 and onset of molluskan leukemia was documented previously. We report the sequences of two distinct and novel p63/p73-like mRNAs, amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from both species. One of the p63/p73-like isoforms contains a 360 nt truncation in the 5' coding region. Based on this truncation and concomitant lack of a trans-activation (TA) domain, we designate this variant as a DeltaNp63/p73-like isoform: the first to be reported in an invertebrate species. In mammalian species, DeltaNp73 potently inhibits the tumor-suppressive function of p73 and p53, and its over-expression serves as a robust marker for mammalian cancer. In addition, we report on the occurrence of alternate polyadenylation sites in the molluskan p63/p73: one proximal and one distal site, which differ by 1260 nt. We hypothesize that differential expression of various molluskan p63/p73-like isoforms, controlled in part by polyadenylation site choice variation, may help to interpret the apparently opposing roles of this gene in the development of cancer. Overall, this research further illustrates the utility of the molluskan model for studies involving the molecular mechanisms of oncogenesis in naturally occurring populations. The data presented here require a revisiting of hypotheses regarding evolution of the p53 gene family. Current hypotheses indicate that 1) the protostome gene family does not contain an intronic promoter for DeltaN expression and 2) p53 gene duplication did not occur in protostomes. Our characterization of DeltaN p63/73 in mussel suggests that molluskan p53 gene family members have acquired an intronic promoter or splicing mechanism, either by invention that predates the evolutionary split of deuterostoms from protostomes, or by parallel evolution. Our data also show that Mytilus p53, p63/p73 and DeltaNp63/p73 are identical in their core regions with variation limited to their C- and N-terminals.     Impaired receptor-mediated endocytosis by the asialoglycoprotein receptor in ethanol-fed mice: implications for studying the role of this receptor in alcoholic apoptosis

    During receptor-mediated endocytosis (RME), extracellular molecules are internalized after being recognized and bound to specific cell surface receptors. In previous studies of the asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGPR) in rats, we showed that ethanol impairs RME at multiple ASGPR sites. Ethanol administration has been shown to increase apoptosis, and we demonstrated increased sensitization to apoptotic induction in hepatocytes from ethanol-fed rats. Although a physiological role for the ASGPR has not been identified, investigators have shown its involvement in the uptake/clearance of apoptotic cells in vitvo. This suggests a potential role for the ASGPR in the removal of apoptotic cells, and the recent availability of an ASGPR-deficient mouse strain provides an excellent opportunity to examine the role of the ASGPR during ethanol impairment. In this study, we examined ethanol-impaired RME in mice and began the characterization of ASGPR-deficient mice for use in ethanol studies. Similar to our findings with rats, ligand binding, internalization, and degradation were decreased 45-50% in hepatocytes from ethanol-fed wild-type mice. In ASGPR-deficient mice, these parameters did not vary among the chow-fed, pair-fed control, or ethanol groups and were negligible compared with those of wild-type mice. TUNEL analysis of liver sections showed an ethanol-induced increase in apoptotic bodies in all mouse strains with a significant difference in the receptor-deficient mice. Further, the livers of ASGPR-deficient mice had three times more apoptotic bodies, in all feeding groups, compared with wild-type mice. These results support the use of the ASGPR-deficient mouse model for studying ethanol-induced liver injury, specifically ethanol-induced apoptosis

    Low Frequency Fatigue in Human Quadriceps is Fatigue Dependent and Not Task Dependent

    It is well accepted that a low intensity/long duration isometric contraction induces more low frequency fatigue (LFF) compared to a high-intensity/short-duration contraction. However, previous reports examined the intensity/duration of the contraction but did not control the level of fatigue when concluding fatigue is task dependent. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a long duration/low intensity fatiguing contraction would induce greater LFF than a short duration/high-intensity contraction when the quadriceps muscle was fatigued to similar levels. Eighteen healthy male subjects performed quadriceps contractions sustained at 35% and 65% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) on separate days, until the tasks induced a similar amount of fatigue (force generating capacity = 45% MVC). Double pulse torque to single pulse torque ratio (D/S ratio) was obtained before, immediately and 5 min after fatigue along with the electromyographic (EMG) signal from vastus medialis (VM) and rectus femoris (RF). The D/S ratio significantly (p \u3c 0.05) increased by 8.7 ± 8.5% (mean ± SD) and 10.2 ± 9.2% after 35% and 65% tasks, respectively, and remained elevated 5 min into recovery; however, there was no significant difference in ratio between the two sessions immediately or 5 min post-fatigue (p \u3e 0.05) even though the endurance time for the 35% fatigue task (124 ± 39.68 s) was significantly longer (p = 0.05) than that of the 65% task (63 ± 17.73 s). EMG amplitude and median power frequency (MPF) analysis also did not reveal any significant differences between these two sessions after fatigue. These findings indicate that LFF fatigue is fatigue dependent as well as task intensity/duration dependent. These findings assist us in understanding task dependency and muscle fatigue
