Kaon production and propagation at intermediate relativistic energies

We systematically study K+K^+ observables in nucleus-nucleus collisions at 1-2 A GeV within the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) transport model. We compare our calculations with the KaoS data on the kaon multiplicities and spectra. In addition, the kaon collective flow is computed and compared with the FOPI and KaoS data. We show, that the elliptic kaon flow measured recently by the KaoS Collaboration is best described by using the Brown-Rho parametrization of the kaon potential (UK(ρ0)30U_K(\rho_0) \simeq 30 MeV).Comment: 21 pages, 3 tables, 17 figures; references added; version accepted in PR

Conditional and constitutive expression of a Tbx1-GFP fusion protein in mice.

BACKGROUND: Velo-cardio-facial syndrome/DiGeorge syndrome (VCFS/DGS) is caused by a 1.5-3 Mb microdeletion of chromosome 22q11.2, frequently referred to as 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS). This region includes TBX1, a T-box transcription factor gene that contributes to the etiology of 22q11DS. The requirement for TBX1 in mammalian development is dosage-sensitive, such that loss-of-function (LOF) and gain-of-function (GOF) of TBX1 in both mice and humans results in disease relevant congenital malformations. RESULTS: To further gain insight into the role of Tbx1 in development, we have targeted the Rosa26 locus to generate a new GOF mouse model in which a Tbx1-GFP fusion protein is expressed conditionally using the Cre/LoxP system. Tbx1-GFP expression is driven by the endogenous Rosa26 promoter resulting in ectopic and persistent expression. Tbx1 is pivotal for proper ear and heart development; ectopic activation of Tbx1-GFP in the otic vesicle by Pax2-Cre and Foxg1-Cre represses neurogenesis and produces morphological defects of the inner ear. Overexpression of a single copy of Tbx1-GFP using Tbx1Cre/+ was viable, while overexpression of both copies resulted in neonatal lethality with cardiac outflow tract defects. We have partially rescued inner ear and heart anomalies in Tbx1Cre/- null embryos by expression of Tbx1-GFP. CONCLUSIONS: We have generated a new mouse model to conditionally overexpress a GFP-tagged Tbx1 protein in vivo. This provides a useful tool to investigate in vivo direct downstream targets and protein binding partners of Tbx1

Phi meson production in near threshold proton-nucleus collisions

The cross section for production of Phi mesons in proton-nucleus reactions is calculated as a function of the target mass. The decay width of the Phi meson is affected by the change of the masses of the Phi, K+ and K- mesons in the medium. A strong attractive K- potential leads to a measurable change of the behavior of the cross section as a function of of the target mass. Comparison between the kaon and electron decay modes are made.Comment: 4 pages, 1figure, new figure, new reference

    The role of N(1535)N^*(1535) in ppppϕpp \to pp \phi and πpnϕ\pi^- p \to n \phi reactions

The near threshold ϕ\phi meson production in proton-proton and πp\pi^- p collisions is studied with the assumption that the production mechanism is due to the sub-NϕN\phi-threshold N(1535)N^*(1535) resonance. The π0\pi^0, η\eta and ρ0\rho^0-meson exchanges for proton-proton collisions are considered. It is shown that the contribution to the ppppϕpp \to pp \phi reaction from the t-channel π0\pi^0 meson exchange is dominant. With a significant N(1535)NϕN^*(1535)N\phi coupling (gN(1535)Nϕ2/4πg^2_{N^*(1535)N \phi}/4 \pi = 0.13), both ppppϕpp \to pp \phi and πpnϕ\pi^- p \to n \phi data are very well reproduced. The significant coupling of the N(1535)N^*(1535) resonance to NϕN \phi is compatible with previous indications of a large ssˉs \bar{s} component in the quark wave function of the N(1535)N^*(1535) resonance and may be the real origin of the significant enhancement of the ϕ\phi production over the naive OZI-rule predictions.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure

Contribution of the nucleon-hyperon reaction channels to K^- production in proton-nucleus collisions

The cross sections for producing K^- mesons in nucleon-hyperon elementary processes are estimated assuming one-pion exchange and using the experimentally known pion-hyperon cross sections. The results are implemented in a transport model which is applied to calculation of proton-nucleus collisions. In significant difference to earlier estimates for heavy-ion collisions the inclusion of the nucleon-hyperon cross section roughly doubles the K^- production in near-threshold proton-nucleus collisions

Higher excitations of ω\omega and ϕ\phi in dilepton spectra

We consider lepton pair production via two-hadron annihilation through various isoscalar vector mesons within hot, baryon-free matter. This is tantamount to constructing effective form factors which we model using a vector-meson-dominance approach and compare with experiment. In particular, we consider the reactions πρe+e\pi\rho\to e^+e^- and KˉK(892)\bar K K^{*}(892) + c.c. e+e\to e^+e^-. We find that ω(1390)\omega(1390) and ϕ(1680)\phi(1680) are visible in the mass spectrum for the thermal production rate above the π+πe+e\pi^{+}\pi^{-} \to e^+e^- tail and even above the πa1e+e\pi a_{1}\to e^+e^- results---both of which were considered important in their respective mass regions.Comment: RevTeX, 9 pages, 6 (uuencoded) figures; to appear in Phys. Self-shielding effect of a single phase liquid xenon detector for direct dark matter search

Liquid xenon is a suitable material for a dark matter search. For future large scale experiments, single phase detectors are attractive due to their simple configuration and scalability. However, in order to reduce backgrounds, they need to fully rely on liquid xenon's self-shielding property. A prototype detector was developed at Kamioka Observatory to establish vertex and energy reconstruction methods and to demonstrate the self-shielding power against gamma rays from outside of the detector. Sufficient self-shielding power for future experiments was obtained.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
