This work surveys typical procedures for sample preparation for most commonly analyzed biofluids with particular emphasis placed on chemical derivatization of sulfur amino acids for their determination by liquid phase separation techniques.     Conductometric Studies of 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium Tetrafluoroborate and 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Tetrafluoroborate in 1-Propanol at Temperatures from (283.15 to 318.15) K

    The electrical conductances of dilute solutions of the ionic liquids 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [emim][BF4] and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [bmim][BF4] in 1-propanol have been measured in the temperature range from (283.15 to 308.15) K at 5 K intervals. The ionic association constant, KA, limiting molar conductances, Λo, and distance parameters, R, were obtained using the low concentration Chemical Model (lcCM). The examined electrolytes are strongly associated in 1-propanol in the whole temperature range. From the temperature dependence of the limiting molar conductivities the Eyring’s activation enthalpy of charge transport was estimated. The thermodynamic functions such as Gibbs energy, entropy, and enthalpy of the process of ion pair formation were calculated from the temperature dependence of the association constants

    Research into the effects of lead on bald eagles has demonstrated that lead levels are higher in bald eagles than other birds at lower trophic levels (Burger and Gochfield 2009). Bald eagle survey data collected in Alaska also tells us that the breeding populations of Alaska contain a substantial proportion of the total number of eagles in North America (Hodges 2011). This project focused on the blood lead levels in previously tagged birds for which blood had been collected by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. The samples included 32 individuals, with 17 males and 15 females. Males had a mean blood lead level of 0.0283±.0072 mg/L and females had a mean blood lead level of 0.0862 ±0.0866 mg/L (see figure 1). Statistical tests of blood lead level and gender, distance to Greens Creek Mine and distance to Juneau, Alaska all showed non-significance. Future studies focusing on individuals with known breeding areas as well as age class should be conducted.Faculty mentor: Heidi Pearso

    Epistemische Morphologie registriert manchmal das Wissen über spezifische Argumente anstatt über Propositionen. Sie steht dann in minimalem Kontrast zu Kongruenzmorphologie, die die Identität von Argumenten registriert. Diese Ähnlichkeit lässt erwarten, dass die relevante Personenkategorie – der Referent, dessen Wissen in epistemischer Morphologie angezeigt wird bzw. der Referent dessen Merkmale in Kongruenzmorphologie unifiziert werden – der gleichen typologischen Varianz unterliegen. Eine Untersuchung vorwiegend himalajischer und kaukasischer Daten bestätigt diese Voraussage: in beiden Systemen sind Personenkategorien bald als Sprecher vs. Andere, bald als Adressat vs. Andere, bald als Informant vs. Andere (Sprecher in Aussagen, Adressat in Fragen) definiert. Die einzige Option, die in epistemischen Systemen bisher nicht belegt ist, ist die Dreifachopposition von Sprecher vs. Adressat vs. Andere, die in Kongruenzsystemen gängig ist.Studies of the epistemic categories expressed in Tibetan auxiliaries and copulas have mostly compared the phenomena with mirativity marking, and this is no doubt the correct comparandum in diachronic research. However, synchronic descriptions are also often tempted to compare the relevant categories with agreement systems or similar reference-related structures, at least for expository purposes when explaining how the system works (e. g. Denwood 1999, Tournadre 1996, Goldstein et al. 1991)

    Origin of Grassy Lake

    Two theories have been proposed to explain the formation of Grassy Lake. One attributes the formation of the swamp to earthquake; the other states that it is one of the many so-called oxbow lakes in the area. A study of aerial photographs showing the absence of fault zones and related sandblows tends to rule out any possibility of an earthquake origin, and in size and shape the swamp in no way resembles an oxbow lake. The aerial photographs reveal instead that the formation of the swamp was due to a natural levee being built up by a river which meandered through the low area now called Grassy Lake. The presence of dense stands of bald cypress (Taxodium distichum (L.) Richard), which grow in abandoned river channels, and a knowledge of the ecology of bald cypress support this hypothesis
