National audienceThe use of new information and communication technologies has become a central solution to improve transport systems. What has led to which is called the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). Societal challenges for ensuring their effective implementations are crucial both to respond to users needs, and to design sustainable transport systems. In this paper, we argue that multi-agent paradigm can address the needs of this domain. We introduce ITS, and we emphasize three main issues of ITS which are how to ensure its functionality, how to render it more "intelligent" despite constraints in scalability, and the ethical implications.

Controlling multi-party interaction within normative multi-agent organizations

http://ceur-ws.org/Vol-627/coin_2.pdfInternational audienceMulti-party communications taking place within organizations lead to different interaction modes between agents (e.g. (in)direct communication between roles, (in)direct communication restricted to a group, etc). Fully normative organisations need to regulate and control those modes as they do for agents' behaviors. This paper proposes to extend the normative organization model Moise in order to specify such interaction modes between autonomous agents participating to an organization. This specification has two purposes: (i ) to make the multi-agent organization able to monitor the interaction between the agents, (ii ) to make the agents able to reason on these modes as they can do on norms. The paper is focused on the first point. We illustrate with a crisis management application how this extension has been implemented thanks to a specialization of the Easi interaction model

Bimodal traffic regulation system: A multi-agent approach

International audienceThe development of surface public transportation networks is a major issue in terms of ecology, economy and society. Their quality in terms of punctuality and passengers services (regularity between buses) should be improved in order to improve their attractiveness. To do so, cities often use regulation systems at intersections that grant priority to buses. The problem is that each transportation mode has its own characteristics and a dedicated decision support system. Therefore, most of them hardly take into account both public transport vehicles such as buses and private vehicle traffic. This paper proposes a multi-agent model that supports bimodal regulation and preserves monomodal regulation. The objective is to improve global traffic, to reduce bus delays and to improve bus regularity in congested areas of the network. In our approach, traffic regulation is obtained thanks to communication, collaboration and negotiation between heterogeneous agents. We tested our strategy on a complex network of nine junctions. The results of the simulation are presented

Generic model for resource allocation in transportation: Application to urban parking management

In this paper, we define the online localized resource allocation problem, especially relevant for modeling transportation applications. The problem modeling takes into account simultaneously the geographical location of consumers and resources together with their online nondeterministic appearance. We use urban parking management as an illustration of this problem. In fact, urban parking management is an online localized resource allocation problem, where the question is how to find an efficient allocation of parking spots to drivers, while they all have dynamic geographical positions and appear nondeterministically. We define this problem and propose a multiagent system to solve it. The objective of the system is to decrease, for private vehicles drivers, the parking spots search time. The drivers are organized in communities and share information about spots availability. We have defined two cooperative models and compared them: a fully cooperative model, where agents share all the available information, and a 'coopetitive' model, where drivers do not share information about the spot that they have chosen. Results show the superiority of the first model
