Liberalisation, surveillance and suicide at La Poste

This article examines how the contradictory dynamics of freedom and control that characterise neoliberal capitalism are played out on lived experiences of work in the context of the newly liberalised and restructured French postal services (La Poste). At La Poste, liberalisation was framed as a great emancipatory project that would reinvigorate a moribund state-owned company, remove regulatory constraints, deepen economic freedoms and strip away deadening bureaucracy. Yet, whilst liberalisation freed La Poste of regulatory controls, it was accompanied by an intensified surveillance and control of everyday working life. The new control measures were not limited to external working practices and structures, but sought to capture the individual worker’s personality, communication and values and harness them towards the company’s redefined commercial goals. Drawing on critical scholarship on neoliberal capitalism and labour, the article shows that when capitalist rationality extends beyond working activity and encroaches on complex, intimate and vulnerable dimensions of the person, this can have dangerous human consequences. At La Poste, liberalisation triggered a profound crisis across the company, transforming it into an ‘entreprise en souffrance’ characterised by escalating levels of psychological distress, chronic stress and a series of employee suicides

Prekare Informationen Unter alien Kategorien von Journalisten sind die freien Mitarbeiter, deren Zahl im Lauf des letzten Jahrzehnts explosionsartig angestiegen ist, sicherlich diejenige Gruppe, für die die Zunahme der wirtschaftlichen Zwänge und eine unbarmherzige Konkurrenz die einschneidensten Folgen für die Arbeit mit sich gebracht haben. Infolge der ökonomischen Prekarität werden diese pro Zeile bezahlten Mitarbeiter buchstäblich zu bloßen Verkäufern von Reportagen degradiert. Die Sicherstellung des Lebensunterhaltes zwingt sie zur ständigen Suche nach neuen, marktgerechten Themen, die sie in der Hoffnung, daß nicht schon Konkurrenten vor ihnen dieselbe Idee behandelt haben, den verschiedenen Kunden, mit denen sie zusammenarbeiten, anzubieten. Ohne den gleichen extremen Gräd an Vermarktung zu erreichen, sind auch festangestellte Journalisten in mancher Hinsicht von der neuen Arbeitssituation beruhrt, die sich an zahlreichen Stellen auf die praktische Berufsausubung auswirkt. Indes hätte sich die Zunahme der Prekarität nicht ohne die Mitwirkung der Beteiligten selbst mit einer solchen Leichtigkeit entwickeln können. Eine Reihe von Grunden, die mit der Geschichte des journalistischen Feldes und gewissen journalistischen Eigenheiten zusammenhängen, lassen den Status des freien Mitarbeiters für die in diesem Sektor Tätigen weiterhin als attraktiv erscheinen. Die Wandlung der Tätigkeit des freien Mitarbeiters in eine Art „Handelsvertreter" der Information wird von den Betroffenen nicht unbedingt in dieser Weise wahrgenommen, und bedeutet für die meisten von ihnen kein ernsthaftes Problem.Precarious news The number of free-lance journalists has literally exploded in the space of ten years ; meanwhile they are surely the category most hard-hit by the increased economic pressures and exacerbated competition. The economically precarious situation of free-lance journalists turns them literally into news sellers. If they are going to make a living, they must constantly find subjects that appeal to the market and offer them to the various buyers they work for in the hope that their competitors have not had the same idea. This new work situation, which in some ways resembles the experience of salaried journalists, though they are not as given to marketing their wares, has a number of impacts on professional practices. Yet such precariousness could not have developed as easily as it has without the cooperation of the actors. A number of reasons having to do both with the history of the field of journalism and with certain pre-dispositions of journalists make free-lancing an attractive proposition. The change-over from free-lancer to a sort of information "sales rep" is not necessarily perceived as such and is not formally a problem for most journalists.Une information précaire Les pigistes, qui ont vu leur nombre littéralement exploser en l'espace d'une dizaine d'années, sont certainement la catégorie de journalistes pour qui l'augmentation des contraintes économiques et la concurrence exacerbée ont eu eu le plus de conséquences sur leur travail. La précarité économique dans laquelle se trouvent les pigistes les oblige littéralement à se transformer en vendeur de reportages. Ils doivent pour gagner leur vie trouver continuellement des sujets conformes au marché et les proposer aux différents acheteurs pour lesquels ils travaillent en espérant que d'autres concurrents n'ont pas eu la même idée. Cette nouvelle situation de travail, qui ressemble à certains égards à ce que peuvent vivre des journalistes titulaires sans pour autant atteindre ce degré de marchandisation, a de nombreuses incidences sur les pratiques professionnelles. Cette précarisation de la profession n'aurait cependant pas pu se développer aussi facilement sans l'adhésion des acteurs. Un certain nombre de raisons qui tiennent à la fois à l'histoire du champ journalistique et à certaines dispositions des journalistes font que le statut de pigiste possède un pouvoir d'attraction pour la profession. La transformation du pigiste en une sorte de « VRP » de l'information n'est pas nécessairement perçue comme telle et ne pose pas formellement problème à la majorité d'entre eux. reportages et le contrôle que les journalistes ont progressivement exercé sur ce même travail ont des effets sur les modes de traitement des documents. Sin lugar a dudas, esta categoria de periodistas es la que más ha sufrido en su trabajo las consecuencias de la agudización de las dificultades económicas y la competencia exacerbada. La precariedad económica en que se encuentran los periodistas independientes los obliga a transformarse literalmente en vendedores de reportajes. Para ganarse la vida, constantemente deben encontrar temas que se adapten a la demanda del mercado y proponerlos a los diferentes compradores para quienes trabajan, abrigando la esperanza de que a otros competidores no se les haya ocurrido la misma idea. Esta nueva situación laboral, que en ciertos aspectos se asemeja a la que pueden vivir los periodistas titulares, aunque no alcanza tal grado de mencantilización, tiene gran incidencia en las prácticas profesionales. Con todo, la precarización de la profesión no habria podido desarrollarse con tanta facilidad si los actores no la hubieran aceptado. La historia del campo periodistico, asi como ciertas características profesionales de los periodistas, hacen que el status del periodista independiente ejerza un poder de atracción para la profesión. Assessment of simplified methods for quantification of [ 18 F]-DPA-714 using 3D whole-brain TSPO immunohistochemistry in a non-human primate

International audienceThe 18 kDa translocator protein (TSPO) is the main molecular target to image neuroinflammation by positron emission tomography (PET). However, TSPO-PET quantification is complex and none of the kinetic modelling approaches has been validated using a voxel-by-voxel comparison of TSPO-PET data with the actual TSPO levels of expression. Here, we present a single case study of binary classification of in vivo PET data to evaluate the statistical performance of different TSPO-PET quantification methods. To that end, we induced a localized and adjustable increase of TSPO levels in a non-human primate brain through a viral-vector strategy. We then performed a voxel-wise comparison of the different TSPO-PET quantification approaches providing parametric [ 18 F]-DPA-714 PET images, with co-registered in vitro three-dimensional TSPO immunohistochemistry (3D-IHC) data. A data matrix was extracted from each brain hemisphere, containing the TSPO-IHC and TSPO-PET data for each voxel position. Each voxel was then classified as false or true, positive or negative after comparison of the TSPO-PET measure to the reference 3D-IHC method. Finally, receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC) were calculated for each TSPO-PET quantification method. Our results show that standard uptake value ratios using cerebellum as a reference region (SUV CBL ) has the most optimal ROC score amongst all non-invasive approaches

Impairment of Glycolysis-Derived l-Serine Production in Astrocytes Contributes to Cognitive Deficits in Alzheimer’s Disease

International audienceAlteration of brain aerobic glycolysis is often observed early in the course of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Whether and how such metabolic dysregulation contributes to both synaptic plasticity and behavioral deficits in AD is not known. Here, we show that the astrocytic l-serine biosynthesis pathway, which branches from glycolysis, is impaired in young AD mice and in AD patients. l-serine is the precursor of d-serine, a co-agonist of synaptic NMDA receptors (NMDARs) required for synaptic plasticity. Accordingly, AD mice display a lower occupancy of the NMDAR co-agonist site as well as synaptic and behavioral deficits. Similar deficits are observed following inactivation of the l-serine synthetic pathway in hippocampal astrocytes, supporting the key role of astrocytic l-serine. Supplementation with l-serine in the diet prevents both synaptic and behavioral deficits in AD mice. Our findings reveal that astrocytic glycolysis controls cognitive functions and suggest oral l-serine as a ready-to-use therapy for AD
