    Stock assessment of the Indian oil-sardinella (Sardinella longiceps) off the West Coast of India

    The Indian oil-sardinella (Sardinella longiceps Val .) has traditionally played a critical role in the marine fishery economics of India, and in particular in the State of Kerala. It's production on the west coast of India exhibits large fluctuations over the years, though it continues to be commercially the most important and abundant pelagic resource (Table 1). These fluctuations have attracted the attention of many research workers. As early as 1910 Hornell attributed them to changes in diatom production or food availability to the fry and the prevalence of favourable hydrological conditions. Kesteven (1967) was of the view that the fluctuations are related to shifts in the migratory path of the fish, causing variations in the accessibility of the stocks to fishing due to the limited range of the fishing operations

    The objective of the current research was to investigate the changes during maturation of cherries (Prunus avium L.). The studies were conducted in the commercial orchard of the Republic of Moldova, at Vindex-Agro SRL, Orhei (47 ° 46'S, 29 ° 13'E) during the three and four years of cherry tree fructification. The orchard was established in autumn 2011 with cherry trees of Ferrovia and Regina varieties, grafted on Gisela 6 rootstock, at a planting distance of 4x2.5 m. The trees are formed according to the Slender Spindle Ameliorated system. Experience includes four rehearsals of eight trees each (n = 32). Fruit recording and evaluation was performed during the ripening period, according to the color of the skin, according to the CTIFL Colored Color (Yellowish-pink, Very light red, Red Bright red color, Dark red, Dark brown-red, Dark brown) and the content of soluble solids content (SSC). By deduction and calculation, the notion of calculating the cherry diameter was introduced in fruit growing knowing their mass. The last weeks before harvest, from the time the fruits begin to mature and the color of the skin changes from green to yellowish, a period determines fruit development and orchard productivity. In this period, as the fruit grows, their diameter increases, but with a much lower rhythm

    Complementary DNA probe for the detection of isolates of Indian peanut clump virus

    The main aim of the present study was to use the clones of PCV genome and select a clone which would hybridize with RNA of several PCV isolates which could be used in the preparation of a C-DNA probe. For this purpose Northern Dot Blot hybridization technique was used which was probed with nick translated 32 p. labeled C-DNA clones of H-IPCV. Among the H-IPCV clines analyzed the 2 kbp and 3.5-4 kbp clines were employed in this study to probe the IPCV isolates. Autoradiographic signals showed greater hybridization could be achieved with 3.5-4 kbp clone than 2 kbp clone using the pure virus and nucleic acid of H-IPCV and with RNA of partially purified preparations of L-IPCV and total nucleic acids of B-IPCV isolate

    Weak Gravitational Field in Finsler-Randers Space and Raychaudhuri Equation

    The linearized form of the metric of a Finsler - Randers space is studied in relation to the equations of motion, the deviation of geodesics and the generalized Raychaudhuri equation are given for a weak gravitational field. This equation is also derived in the framework of a tangent bundle. By using Cartan or Berwald-like connections we get some types "gravito - electromagnetic" curvature. In addition we investigate the conditions under which a definite Lagrangian in a Randers space leads to Einstein field equations under the presence of electromagnetic field. Finally, some applications of the weak field in a generalized Finsler spacetime for gravitational waves are given.Comment: 22 pages, matches version published in GER

    Spilocea oleagina is a dangerous obligate fungal pathogen of olive, feared in the Mediterranean countries, causing Peacock's eye or leaf spot infection, which can lead to a serious yield loss of approximately 20% or higher depending on climatic conditions. Coping with this disease is much more problematic for organic farms. To date, knowledge on the genetic control of possible mechanisms of resistance/low susceptibility is quite limited. In this work, comparative transcriptomic analysis (RNA-seq) was conducted in leaf tissues of a low susceptible cultivar Koroneiki and a high susceptible cultivar Nocellara del Belice, both tested in the field using the NaOH test, considering two stages-"zero sign of disease" and "evident sign of infection". Cultivars showed a very large number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in both stages. 'Koroneiki' showed an extensive hormonal crosstalk, involving Abscisic acid (ABA) and ethylene synergistically acting with Jasmonate, with early signaling of the disease and remarkable defense responses against Spilocea through the over-expression of many resistance gene analogs or pathogenesis-related (PR) genes: non-specific lipid-transfer genes (nsLTPs), LRR receptor-like serine/threonine-protein kinase genes, GDSL esterase lipase, defensin Ec-AMP-D2-like, pathogenesis-related leaf protein 6-like, Thaumatin-like gene, Mildew resistance Locus O (MLO) gene, glycine-rich protein (GRP), MADS-box genes, STH-21-like, endochitinases, glucan endo-1,3-beta-glucosidases, and finally, many proteinases. Numerous genes involved in cell wall biogenesis, remodeling, and cell wall-based defense, including lignin synthesis, were also upregulated in the resistant cultivar, indicating the possible role of wall composition in disease resistance. It was remarkable that many transcription factors (TS), some of which involved in Induced Systemic Resistance (ISR), as well as some also involved in abiotic stress response, were found to be uniquely expressed in 'Koroneiki', while 'Nocellara del Belice' was lacking an effective system of defense, expressing genes that overlap with wounding responses, and, to a minor extent, genes related to phenylpropanoid and terpenoid pathways. Only a Thaumatin-like gene was found in both cultivars showing a similar expression. In this work, the genetic factors and mechanism underlying the putative resistance trait against this fungal pathogen were unraveled for the first time and possible target genes for breeding resistant olive genotypes were found

    Tuna fisheries in India: Recent trends

    Tuna is one of the least exploited resources of the Indian seas accounting for 0.98 % of the total marine fish catch of India at the 1978 level. On the other hand tuna resources have been exploited by countries such as Japan, Korea and Taiwan from the Indian Ocean. Relevant portions of the recommendations of the 'Symposium on scombroid fishes' held at Mandapam camp. The authorities involved with the planning of the Indian Ocean Expedition give due consideration to gathering and collating the information which should be useful in aiding the development of high seas fisheries for scombroid fishes in the Indian Ocean. In the context of these developments and the need for efficient utilisation of the resources of the Exclusive Economic Zone, a brief account on the trend in the tuna fisheries in the country is presented here

    Intermediate phase, network demixing, boson and floppy modes, and compositional trends in glass transition temperatures of binary AsxS1-x system

    The structure of binary As_xS_{1-x} glasses is elucidated using modulated-DSC, Raman scattering, IR reflectance and molar volume experiments over a wide range (8%<x<41%) of compositions. We observe a reversibility window in the calorimetric experiments, which permits fixing the three elastic phases; flexible at x<22.5%, intermediate phase (IP) in the 22.5%<x<29.5% range, and stressed-rigid at x>29.5%. Raman scattering supported by first principles cluster calculations reveal existence of both pyramidal (PYR, As(S1/2)3) and quasi-tetrahedral(QT, S=As(S1/2)3) local structures. The QT unit concentrations show a global maximum in the IP, while the concentration of PYR units becomes comparable to those of QT units in the phase, suggesting that both these local structures contribute to the width of the IP. The IP centroid in the sulfides is significantly shifted to lower As content x than in corresponding selenides, a feature identified with excess chalcogen partially segregating from the backbone in the sulfides, but forming part of the backbone in selenides. These ideas are corroborated by the proportionately larger free volumes of sulfides than selenides, and the absence of chemical bond strength scaling of Tgs between As-sulfides and As-selenides. Low-frequency Raman modes increase in scattering strength linearly as As content x of glasses decreases from x = 20% to 8%, with a slope that is close to the floppy mode fraction in flexible glasses predicted by rigidity theory. These results show that floppy modes contribute to the excess vibrations observed at low frequency. In the intermediate and stressed rigid elastic phases low-frequency Raman modes persist and are identified as boson modes. Some consequences of the present findings on the optoelectronic properties of these glasses is commented upon.Comment: Accepted for PR

    Extraction process optimization of flavonoid and in vitro amylase inhibitory effect of purified quercetin derivative from Amorphophallus paeoniifolius tubers

    544-556Amorphophallus paeoniifolius (Elephant foot yam) is a prominent tuberous plant utilized across several parts of India to treat various ailments such as a tumour, haemorrhage, microbial infections, cough, bronchitis, diabetes, anaemia, and hepato-gastro and cardiovascular diseases. In this context, the present study aims to optimize the extraction process of the flavonoid and to study the in vitro amylase inhibitory effect of purified flavonoid moiety. The Shake flask method with different extraction solvents was adopted to quantify the flavonoid content. Central composite design (CCD) based response surface methodology (RSM) was formulated to optimize the extraction process. Three-dimensional preparative chromatography (3D PTLC) was executed to purify the flavonoid content and high-resolution liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HRLC-MS) was adopted to predict the structure. 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) based spectrophotometry method was used to determine the amylase inhibitory property. All the analyses were subjected to standard statistical tests. The developed model for the extraction optimization process was found to be near significant (P = 0.242) with temperature as a significant variable (P = 0.029), and a 107-fold increase (71.11±0.5 mg/g tissue) of flavonoid content was recorded. A strong yellow colour spot (flavonoid fraction) was eluted using 3D PTLC technique and the molecule was identified as quercetin derivative (m/z 447) by the direct MS method. Significant amylase inhibition (36.1±2.1%) recorded by purified quercetin derivative has documented the utilization of A. paeoniifolius tubers as classical traditional medicine
