A comparative study of night-time enhancement of TEC at a low latitude station on storm and quiet nights including the local time, seasonal and solar activity dependence
International audienceThe main characteristics of night-time enhancements in TEC during magnetic storms are compared with those during quiet nights for different seasons and solar activity conditions at Palehua, a low latitude station during the period 1980?1989. We find that the mean amplitude has both a seasonal and solar activity dependence: in winter, the values are higher for weak storms as compared to those during quiet nights and increase with an increase in solar activity. In summer, the mean amplitude values during weak storms and quiet nights are almost equal. But during equinox, the mean amplitude values for quiet nights are greater than those during weak storms. The mean half-amplitude duration is higher during weak storms as compared to that during quiet nights in summer. However, during winter and equinox, the durations are almost equal for both quiet and weak storm nights. For the mean half-amplitude duration, the quiet night values for all the seasons and equinoctial weak storm values increase with an increase in solar activity. The occurrence frequency (in percent) of TEC enhancement during weak storms is greater than during quiet nights for all seasons. The mean amplitude, the mean half-amplitude duration and the occurrence frequency (in percent) of TEC enhancement values are higher during major storms as compared to those during quiet nights. The above parameters have their highest values during pre-midnight hours. From the data analysed, this behaviour is true in the case of major storms also

symmetry considerations. We point out that, quite generally, this admits
solitonic excitations which are the color analog of skyrmions. Some general

Chern-Simons Theory and the Quark-Gluon Plasma
The generating functional for hard thermal loops in QCD is important in
setting up a resummed perturbation theory, so that all terms of a given order
in the coupling constant can be consistently taken into account. It is also the
functional which leads to a gauge invariant description of Debye screening and
plasma waves in the quark-gluon plasma. We have recently shown that this
functional is closely related to the eikonal for a Chern-Simons gauge theory.
In this paper, this relationship is explored and explained in more detail,

Hydrography and biogeochemistry of the north western Bay of Bengal and the north eastern Arabian Sea during winter monsoon
The north eastern Arabian Sea and the north western Bay of Bengal within the Indian exclusive economic zone were explored for their environmental characteristics during the winter monsoons of 2000 and 2001 respectively. The two regions were found to respond paradoxically to comparable intensities of the atmospheric forcing. There is an asymmetry in the net heat exchange of these two basins with atmosphere because of the varying thickness of barrier layer. During winter, the convective mixing in the Arabian Sea is driven by net heat loss from the ocean, whereas the Bay of Bengal does not contribute to such large heat loss to the atmosphere. It appears that the subduction of high saline Arabian Sea water mass is the mechanism behind the formation of a barrier layer in the northeast Arabian Sea; whereas that in the Bay of Bengal and the southeast Arabian Sea are already established as due to low saline water mass. The weak barrier layer in the Arabian Sea yields to the predominance of convective mixing to bring in nitrate-rich waters from the deeper layers to the surface, thereby supporting enhanced biological production. On the other hand, the river discharge into the Bay of Bengal during this period results in the formation of a thick and stable barrier layer, which insulates vertical mixing and provide oligotrophic condition in the Bay
Chern-Simons Reduction and non-Abelian Fluid Mechanics
We propose a non-Abelian generalization of the Clebsch parameterization for a
vector in three dimensions. The construction is based on a group-theoretical
reduction of the Chern-Simons form on a symmetric space. The formalism is then
used to give a canonical (symplectic) discussion of non-Abelian fluid
mechanics, analogous to the way the Abelian Clebsch parameterization allows a

Threadfin breams and lizard fish resources in the shelf waters of the Indian EEZ
The regional and seasonal distribution and abundance of threadfin breams and
lizard fish are presented as revealed by the bottom trawling operations of FORV
Sagar Sampada during cruises 56-91 (1989 and 1992). The threadfin breams
occurred in 49 and lizard fish in 25% of the total number of bottom trawhng stations
surveyed. The most productive grounds for threadfin breams were located in the
southwest coast between 8° and 15° N latitudinal zones, with the area 11775°
yielding the highest average catch rate of 1794 kg/hr. Very high congregation and
concentration of threadfin breams, composed mainly of Nemipterus mesoprion and
N. japonicus, was observed in the southwest in 41- 80 m depth zones during
southwest monsoon period. Lizard fish resources, composed mainly of Saurida
tumbil and S. undosquamis were also relatively more dominant in the southwest
coast than along the east coast and in the EEZ of Andaman-Nicobar islands. The size
distribution of N. japonicus and A', mesoprion showed that smaller modal groups
were dominant in shallower depth zones. The potential yield of threadfin breams in

Oceanographic parameters and their relationship to fish catch estimation: a case study in coastal waters north of Cochin during 1981

Remarks on Goldstone bosons and hard thermal loops
The hard thermal loop effective action for Goldstone bosons is deduced by
symmetry arguments from the corresponding result for gauge bosons. Pseudoscalar
mesons in Chromodynamics and magnons in an antiferromagnet are discussed as
special cases, including the hard thermal loop contribution to their
