Positron production by pulsars
Calculations based on two specific pulsar models show that in either case the 511 keV gamma-ray line from the galactic center can be explained as the as the result of the annihilation of positrons produced by pulsars

Simultaneous chromatic dispersion, polarization-mode-dispersion and OSNR monitoring at 40Gbit/s
A novel method for independent and simultaneous monitoring of chromatic dispersion ( CD), first-order PMD and OSNR in 40Gbit/s systems is proposed and demonstrated. This is performed using in-band tone monitoring of 5GHz, optically down-converted to a low intermediate-frequency (IF) of 10kHz. The measurement provides a large monitoring range with good accuracies for CD (4742 +/- 100ps/nm), differential group delay (DGD) (200 +/- 4ps) and OSNR (23 +/- 1dB), independently of the bit-rate. In addition, the use of electro-absorption modulators (EAM) for the simultaneous down-conversion of all channels and the use of low-speed detectors makes it cost effective for multi-channel operation. Quasars in the 2MASS Second Incremental Data Release
Using the 2MASS Second Incremental Data Release, we have searched for near
infrared counterparts to 13214 quasars from the Veron-Cetty & Veron(2000)
catalog. We have detected counterparts within 4 arcsec for 2277 of the
approximately 6320 quasars within the area covered by the 2MASS Second
Incremental Data Release. Only 1.6% of these are expected to be chance
coincidences. Though this sample is heterogeneous, we find that known
radio-loud quasars are more likely to have large near-infrared-to-optical
luminosity ratios than radio-quiet quasars are, at a statistically significant
level. This is consistent with dust-reddened quasars being more common in
radio-selected samples than in optically-selected samples, due to stronger
selection effects against dust-reddened quasars in the latter. We also find a
statistically significant dearth of optically luminous quasars with large
near-infrared-to-optical luminosity ratios. This can be explained in a dust
obscuration model but not in a model where synchrotron emission extends from
the radio into the near-infrared and creates such large ratios. We also find
that selection of quasar candidates from the B-J/J-K color-color diagram,
modelled on the V-J/J-K selection method of Warren, Hewett & Foltz (2000), is
likely to be more sensitive to dust-obscured quasars than selection using only

Quasi-equilibrium binary black hole sequences for puncture data derived from helical Killing vector conditions
We construct a sequence of binary black hole puncture data derived under the
assumptions (i) that the ADM mass of each puncture as measured in the
asymptotically flat space at the puncture stays constant along the sequence,
and (ii) that the orbits along the sequence are quasi-circular in the sense
that several necessary conditions for the existence of a helical Killing vector
are satisfied. These conditions are equality of ADM and Komar mass at infinity
and equality of the ADM and a rescaled Komar mass at each puncture. In this
paper we explicitly give results for the case of an equal mass black hole
binary without spin, but our approach can also be applied in the general case.
We find that up to numerical accuracy the apparent horizon mass also remains
constant along the sequence and that the prediction for the innermost stable
circular orbit is similar to what has been found with the effective potential

Convex Independence in Permutation Graphs
A set C of vertices of a graph is P_3-convex if every vertex outside C has at
most one neighbor in C. The convex hull \sigma(A) of a set A is the smallest
P_3-convex set that contains A. A set M is convexly independent if for every
vertex x \in M, x \notin \sigma(M-x). We show that the maximal number of
vertices that a convexly independent set in a permutation graph can have, can
be computed in polynomial time
Assembly and analysis of fragmentation data for liquid propellant vessels
Fragmentation data was assembled and analyzed for exploding liquid propellant vessels. These data were to be retrieved from reports of tests and accidents, including measurements or estimates of blast yield, etc. A significant amount of data was retrieved from a series of tests conducted for measurement of blast and fireball effects of liquid propellant explosions (Project PYRO), a few well-documented accident reports, and a series of tests to determine auto-ignition properties of mixing liquid propellants. The data were reduced and fitted to various statistical functions. Comparisons were made with methods of prediction for blast yield, initial fragment velocities, and fragment range. Reasonably good correlation was achieved. Methods presented in the report allow prediction of fragment patterns, given type and quantity of propellant, type of accident, and time of propellant mixing
Lower thermosphere densities of N2, O and Ar under high latitude winter conditions
Measurements of the neutral thermosphere were conducted in northern Scandinavia during the Energy Budget Campaign. These measurements included determinations of N2, O, and Ar densities using rocket-borne experiments. The results obtained in the experiments are presented, taking into account also details regarding the employed experimental methods, and an evaluation of the significance of the data. It is found that there are striking differences in thermospheric distributions of the neutral constituents under different geomagnetic conditions. Under quiet geomagnetic conditions there was reasonable agreement with the United States Standard Atmosphere. The concentrations of N2 and Ar were about 70 percent of the predicted values, while the O concentration was about 2.5 times greater
