    The Enterics for Global Health (EFGH) Shigella Surveillance Study in Malawi

    Background: Malawi is among 7 countries participating in the Enterics for Global Health (EFGH) Shigella surveillance study, which aims to determine the incidence of medically attended diarrhea attributed to Shigella, a leading bacterial cause of diarrhea in children in low-resource settings. Methods: We describe the EFGH study site in the densely populated informal settlement of Ndirande Township, Blantyre, Malawi. We explore the site’s geographical location, demographic characteristics, and the healthcare-seeking behavior of its population, particularly for childhood diarrhea. We also describe the management of childhood diarrhea at the health facility, and the associated challenges to attaining optimum adherence to local and national guidelines at the site. Conclusions: Our overarching aim is to improve global health through understanding and mitigating the impact of diarrhea attributed to Shigella

    An exploratory study of personality factors in thromboangiitis obliterans: A study of 18 patients

    Eighteen carefully selected male patients having thromboangiitis obliterans were studied by psychodiagnostic methods (Rorschach, Thematic Apperception Test and Sentence Completion), and the findings were evaluated and rated by three independent psychologists skilled in diagnostic testing. Certain personality traits emerged as being characteristic of the group as a whole. The patients in this group were characterized mainly by poorly suppressed hostility, together with guilt over hostile and aggressive impulses; negativism, along with a desire to conform socially; ambition combined with strong unconscious desires for dependency which seemed to be entirely unacceptable at a conscious level; and fear of emotional involvement, particularly with members of the opposite sex, who were seen as rigid, prudish and unloving. While the findings from this size sample should not be regarded as characteristic of all patients with thromboangiitis obliterans, these individuals revealed certain traits to a degree which merits further consideration and exploration. © 1956, Sage Publications.     Aptameric Recognition-Modulated Electroactivity of Poly(4-Styrenesolfonic Acid)-Doped Polyaniline Films for Single-Shot Detection of Tetrodotoxin

    The work being reported is the first electrochemical sensor for tetrodotoxin (TTX). It was developed on a glassy carbon electrodes (C) that was modified with poly(4-styrenesolfonic acid)-doped polyaniline film (PANI/PSSA). An amine-end functionalized TTX-binding aptamer, 5′-NH2-AAAAATTTCACACGGGTGCCTCGGCTGTCC-3′ (NH2-Apt), was grafted via covalent glutaraldehyde (glu) cross-linking. The resulting aptasensor (C//PANI+/PSSA-glu-NH2-Apt) was interrogated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in sodium acetate buffer (NaOAc, pH 4.8) before and after 30 min incubation in standard TTX solutions. Both CV and EIS results confirmed that the binding of the analyte to the immobilized aptamer modulated the electrochemical properties of the sensor: particularly the charge transfer resistance (Rct) of the PANI+/PSSA film, which served as a signal reporter. Based on the Rct calibration curve of the TTX aptasensor, the values of the dynamic linear range (DLR), sensitivity and limit of detection (LOD) of the sensor were determined to be 0.23–1.07 ng·mL−1 TTX, 134.88 ± 11.42 Ω·ng·mL−1 and 0.199 ng·mL−1, respectively. Further studies are being planned to improve the DLR as well as to evaluate selectivity and matrix effects in real samples
