Galois extensions of Lubin-Tate spectra
Let E_n be the n-th Lubin-Tate spectrum at a prime p. There is a commutative
S-algebra E^{nr}_n whose coefficients are built from the coefficients of E_n
and contain all roots of unity whose order is not divisible by p. For odd
primes p we show that E^{nr}_n does not have any non-trivial connected finite
Galois extensions and is thus separably closed in the sense of Rognes. At the
prime 2 we prove that there are no non-trivial connected Galois extensions of
E^{nr}_n with Galois group a finite group G with cyclic quotient. Our results
carry over to the K(n)-local context.Comment: revised version in final for

We have identified 15 extended ultraviolet (XUV) disks in a largely field sample of 38 E/S0 galaxies that have stellar masses primarily below ~4 × 10^(10) M_☉ and comparable numbers on the red and blue sequences. We use a new purely quantitative XUV-disk definition designed with reference to the "Type 1" XUV-disk definition found in the literature, requiring UV extension relative to a UV-defined star formation threshold radius. The 39% ± 9% XUV-disk frequency for these E/S0s is roughly twice the ~20% reported for late-type galaxies (although differences in XUV-disk criteria complicate the comparison), possibly indicating that XUV disks are preferentially associated with galaxies experiencing weak or inefficient star formation. Consistent with this interpretation, we find that the XUV disks in our sample do not correlate with enhanced outer-disk star formation as traced by blue optical outer-disk colors. However, UV-Bright (UV-B) disk galaxies with blue UV colors outside their optical 50% light radii do display enhanced optical outer-disk star formation as well as enhanced atomic gas content. UV-B disks occur in our E/S0s with a 42^(+9)_–8% frequency and need not coincide with XUV disks; thus their combined frequency is 61% ± 9%. For both XUV and UV-B disks, UV colors typically imply <1 Gyr ages, and most such disks extend beyond the optical R_(25) radius. XUV disks occur over the full sample mass range and on both the red and blue sequences, suggesting an association with galaxy interactions or another similarly general evolutionary process. In contrast, UV-B disks favor the blue sequence and may also prefer low masses, perhaps reflecting the onset of cold-mode gas accretion or another mass-dependent evolutionary process. Virtually all blue E/S0s in the gas-rich regime below stellar mass M_t ~ 5 × 10^9 M_☉ (the "gas-richness threshold mass") display UV-B disks, supporting the previously suggested association of this population with active disk growth
High resolution near-infrared imaging of submillimeter galaxies
We present F110W (~J) and F160W (~H) observations of ten submillimeter
galaxies (SMGs) obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope's (HST's) NICMOS
camera. Our targets have optical redshifts in the range 2.20<z<2.81 confirmed
by millimeter CO or mid-IR spectroscopy, guaranteeing that the two bands sample
the rest-frame optical with the Balmer break falling between them. Eight of ten
are detected in both bands, while two are detected in F160W only. We study
their F160W morphologies, applying a maximum-deblending detection algorithm to
distinguish multiple- from single-component configurations, leading to
reassessments for several objects. Based on our NICMOS imaging and/or previous
dynamical evidence we identify five SMGs as multiple sources, which we
interpret as merging systems. Additionally, we calculate morphological
parameters asymmetry (A) and Gini coefficient (G); thanks to our sample's
limited redshift range we recover the trend that multiple-component,
merger-like morphologies are reflected in higher asymmetries. We analyze the
stellar populations of nine objects with F110W/F160W photometry, using archival
HST optical data when available. For multiple systems, we are able to model the
individual components that build up an SMG. With the available data we cannot
discriminate among star formation histories, but we constrain stellar masses
and mass ratios for merger-like SMG systems, obtaining a mean
log(M_*/M_sun)=10.9+/-0.2 for our full sample, with individual values
log(M_*/M_sun)~9.6-11.8. The morphologies and mass ratios of the least and most
massive systems match the predictions of the major-merger and cold accretion
SMG formation scenarios, respectively, suggesting that both channels may have a

Full-scale measurement and analysis of train slipstreams and wakes. Part 1: Ensemble averages
This paper describes a series of extensive and unique full-scale measurements of the slipstreams of trains of various types that were carried out as part of the EU-sponsored AeroTRAIN project, together with the analysis of the experimental data. These experiments were carried out with the fundamental aim of seeking to reduce the complexity of the current technical specifications for interoperability (TSI) testing methodology. Experimental sites in Spain and Germany were used, for a range of different train types - high-speed single-unit trains, high-speed double-unit trains, conventional passenger units and locomotive/coach combinations. The data that was obtained was supplemented by other data from previous projects. The analysis primarily involved a study of the ensemble averages of the slipstream velocities, measured both at trackside and above platforms. The differences between the flows around different train types were elucidated, and the effect of platforms on slipstream behaviour described. A brief analysis of the effects of crosswinds on slipstream behaviour was also carried out. Through a detailed analysis of slipstream velocity components, the detailed nature of the flow around the nose and in the near wake of the train was investigated, again revealing differences in flow pattern between different trains. Significant similarity in the far wake flows was revealed. These fundamental results form the basis for the detailed discussion of the proposed TSI methodology that will be presented in Part 2 of this paper. Overall the results enable the nature of the flow field around trains to be understood in far greater detail than before, and also allow the developments of a revised TSI methodology which is more efficient than current practice. © IMechE 2013 Reprints and permissions: sagepub.co.uk/journalsPermissions.nav
Age, growth, mortality, and radiometric age validation of gray snapper (Lutjanus griseus) from Louisiana
The gray snapper (Lutjanus griseus) is a temperate and tropical reef fish that is found along the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coasts of the southeastern United States. The recreational fishery for gray snapper has developed rapidly in south Louisiana with the advent of harvest and seasonal
restrictions on the established red snapper (L. campechanus) fishery. We examined the age and growth of
gray snapper in Louisiana with the use of cross-sectioned sagittae. A total of 833 specimens, (441 males, 387
females, and 5 of unknown sex) were opportunistically sampled from the recreational fishery from August 1998 to August 2002. Males ranged in size from 222 to 732 mm total length (TL) and from 280 g to 5700 g total weight (TW) and females ranged from 254 to 756 mm TL and from 340 g to 5800 g TW. Both edge analysis and bomb radiocarbon analyses were used to validate otolith-based age estimates. Ages were estimated for 718 individuals; both males and females ranged
from 1 to 28 years. The von Bertalanffy growth models derived from TL at age were Lt = 655.4{1–e[–0.23(t)]}
for males, Lt = 657.3{1–e[– 0.21(t)]} for females, and L t = 656.4{1–e[– 0.22 (t)]} for all specimens of known sex. Catch curves were used to produce a total mortality (Z) estimate of 0.17. Estimates of M calculated with various
methods ranged from 0.15 to 0.50; however we felt that M= 0.15 was the most appropriate estimate based on our estimate of Z. Full recruitment to the gray snapper recreational fishery began at age 4, was completed by age
8, and there was no discernible peak in the catch curve dome
The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500: Increasing Competition in Open-Wheeled Automobile Racing in the United States
Over the course of its lengthy history, the popularity of open-wheeled automobile racing in the United States has waxed and waned. This is especially evident in recent years. The 1996 “split” between the Indy Racing League (IRL; later, the IndyCar Series) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART; later the Champ Car World Series) severely hurt the sport. Following the split there was a well-documented decline in fan interest from which the sport has not recovered. Less understood, however, is that under the Indy Racing League the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in open-wheeled racing in the United States, became more competitive. Ironically, while fan interest decreased in the Indy Racing League era, the quality of racing increased. The increased competition associated with the Indy Racing League is a historically significant development that bodes well for the future of the sport
