The development of business intelligence (BI) applications, involving of data sources, Data Warehouse (DW), Data Mart (DM) and Operational Data Store (ODS), imposes a major challenge to BI developers. This is mainly due to the lack of established models, guidelines and techniques in the development process as compared to system development in the discipline of software engineering. Furthermore, the present BI applications emphasize on the development of strategic information in contrast to operational and tactical. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to propose a conceptual design model for BI applications using ODS (CoDMODS). Through expert validation, the proposed conceptual design model that was developed by means of design science research approach, was found to satisfy nine quality model dimensions, which are, easy to understand, covers clear steps, is relevant and timeless, demonstrates flexibility, scalability, accuracy, completeness and consistency. Additionally, the two prototypes that were developed based on CoDMODS for water supply service (iUBIS) and telecommunication maintenance (iPMS) recorded a high usability average min value of 5.912 using Computer System Usability Questionnaire (CSUQ) instrument. The outcomes of this study, particularly the proposed model, contribute to the analysis and design method for the development of the operational and tactical information in BI applications. The model can be referred as guidelines by BI developers. Furthermore, the prototypes that were developed in the case studies can assist the organizations in using quality information for business operations

Analysis and design are very important roles in Data Warehouse (DW) system development and forms as a backbone of any successful or failure of the DWproject. The emergence trends of ubiquitous-based application required DW system to be implemented in the mobile environment. However, current analysis and design approaches are based on existing DW environments that focusing on the deployment of DW system in static client-based applications. This will create the limitations on user accessed and reduced the used of analytical information by the decision makers.Consequently, this will prolong the adoption of business intelligence (BI) applications to the users and organisations. This research is to suggest an approach for designing the DW and implement the DW system on the mobile environments.A variant dimension modeling technique will be used to enhance the DW modeling in order to accommodate the requirements of mobile characteristics in the DW design

Business Intelligence (BI) system using Data Warehouse (DW) technology is one of the important strategic management approaches in the organizations today.BI combines architectures, databases, analytical tools, and methodologies to enable interactive information access focused on analytical reports.Analytical reports, which affect the long-term direction of the entire company, are typically made by top managers. Decisions making in an organization is very difficult, especially if the organization has poor quality data and limited information. The management in the organization always depended on the past experiences and their instincts when making a decision making without support from the factual information. DW is a technology enable to integrate and transform enterprise data for strategic decision making. The organization, which is, responsible to manage entrepreneur activities need an analytical report for strategic decision making. This paper is focused how to design and develop Graduate Entrepreneur Analytical Reports called GEAR by using a DW model in Cooperative and Entrepreneur Development Institute (CEDI), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) as a case study. This system has been tested through the system user feedback by using Computer System Usability Questionnaire (CSUQ), which measures satisfaction and consumer usability

Organizations design their own business intelligent (BI) systems to fundamentally support and improve their decision support systems. Decision-making process is indispensable in a world of constant changes; two important changes are the rapid response of organizations and companies in such process, and recognition of data integration as the backbone of most BI systems. For designers, the existence of two main types of data integration causes difficulty in selecting the best one during the process of designing their own BI applications. In this paper, the design and implementation of Generic Framework for Better Choosing Between Data Integration Types, a general framework that can be used by developers of any BI application, is proposed to help in the selection of the most suitable type of data integration. Comparative analysis between two techniques related with data integration is performed, and a prototype of the proposed framework is constructed to enable its use

Managing water loss for sustainability of rural water supply

    Get PDF
Water supply for rural areas flows through pipelines from many sources such as underground water and reservoirs. Due to factors such as human activities, geographic changes and natural hazards, pipelines are exposed to the ground, crack, leak and burst. Water flows out from the pipelines before reaching to the consumers is considered as water loss and this is a major component in non-revenue water. This paper highlights a framework and a work procedure for non-revenue water analysis. Based on this analysis, a comprehensive and flexible web based prototype has been developed to manage the water loss. Functions that have been developed are data recording,non-revenue water estimation and report generation. This prototype can be used by the water authority for assisting decision making and planning

Improving Entrepreneurial Opportunity Recognition through Web Content Analytics

The ability to recognize and develop an opportunity into a venture defines an entrepreneur. Factors such as prior knowledge, cognitive and creative capabilities are shown to affect opportunity recognition in entrepreneurs. Research also shows that experienced entrepreneurs search and scan for information to discover opportunities. Searching and scanning for information mediate the effect of prior knowledge on novice entrepreneurs and enable them to better identify and recognize opportunities even when lacking knowledge and experience. There is less focus in research on finding empirically proven techniques and methods to develop and enhance opportunity recognition in student entrepreneurs. The lack of knowledge has been linked to more likelihood of business failures. This study aims to develop a model for opportunity recognition by using web content mining for student entrepreneurs to better identify and recognize business opportunities. The model will be evaluated through qualitative and quantitative methods. A prototype of the model is planned to be built to evaluate the efficacy and usefulness of the model. This model is expected to enable graduate entrepreneurs to generate more business ideas that are more innovative and viable
