An assessment of radiation budget data provided by ISCCP and GEWEX-SRB

    Get PDF
The projects ISCCP and GEWEX-SRB compute global data sets of radiation budget components at the top of the atmosphere and at the surface. Time series range from July 1983 to June 2001, and to October 1995, respectively. Comparing monthly averages over broader zones we find that the SRB underestimates the incident radiation at TOA by more than 2–5 Wm−2 over the tropics and up to 40 Wm−2 over polar regions. The ISCCP infrared radiation fluxes near the surface and at TOA, in particular over both polar zones, are higher than those of the SRB. Clouds in the ISCCP appear optically less effective than in the SRB. Interannual and month-to-month variations are observed indicating serious errors in ancillary data. Complete reprocessing is recommended. End products need validation within this large domain in space and time with correlated radiation budget measurements at TOA and at ground

Environmental barrier coatings for SiC/SiC and Ox/Ox CMCs

    Get PDF
Environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) are being developed for next-generation gas turbine engines to protect hot-section SiC/SiC or Ox/Ox (alumina-based) ceramic matrix composite (CMC) components in the harsh operating environments. In this paper, high-velocity water vapor recession (v=100m/s, PO2=0.15atm T=1200°C) and thermal gradient cycling behavior (Tsurface=1250°C) of thermally sprayed Yb2Si2O7/Si EBCs on SiC using different processing conditions will be presented. Phase composition and microstructural changes in the coatings prior and after the tests will be examined. Furthermore, the potential of different (Yb, Sc)-zirconate and hafnate compositions with high melting points as EBC materials will be discussed based on their investigated bulk properties. Characteristics of the solid-state synthesized materials, which were high energy ball milled into submicron particle sizes and subsequently densified with field assisted sintering technology (FAST), such as phase stability (HT-XRD), thermophysical (dilatometry, thermal diffusivity) and mechanical properties (hardness, indentation fracture toughness) will be demonstrated

Plasma sprayed duplex ytterbium disilicate/monosilicate EBCs and the transformation from ytterbia to ytterbium monosilicate during burner rig testing

    Get PDF
Environmental Barrier Coating systems (EBCs) were thermally cycled in a burner rig test facility. Yb2Si2O7 (YbDS) layer was deposited by air plasma spraying while two suspension plasma sprayed Yb2SiO5 (YbMS) microstructures were evaluated in duplex (YbDS/YbMS) systems: columnar and segmentation cracked. EBCs underwent 2000 cycles at a surface temperature of 1300 °C without signs of delamination failure. A porous YbMS layer formed at the base of intercolumnar gaps and segmentation cracks in the duplex systems, presumably due to reactions with entrapped water vapor. Furthermore, Yb2O3 depletion zones were evident at both the surface and YbDS/YbMS interface of the duplex EBCs

Universal Infrared Absorption Spectroscopy Using Uniform Electromagnetic Enhancement

    Get PDF
Infrared absorption spectroscopy has greatly benefited from the electromagnetic field enhancement offered by plasmonic surfaces. However, because of the localized nature of plasmonic fields, such field enhancements are limited to nanometer-scale volumes. Here, we demonstrate that a relatively small, but spatially uniform field enhancement can yield a superior infrared detection performance compared to the plasmonic field enhancement exhibited by optimized infrared nanoantennas. A specifically designed CaF2/Al thin film surface is shown to enable observation of stronger vibrational signals from the probe material, with wider bandwidth and a deeper spatial extent of the field enhancement as compared to such plasmonic surfaces. It is demonstrated that the surface structure presented here can enable chemically specific and label-free detection of organic monolayers using surface-enhanced infrared spectroscopy, indicating a great potential in highly sensitive yet cost-effective biomolecular sensing applications. © 2016 American Chemical Society

Fumonisin B1 Toxicity in Grower-Finisher Pigs: A Comparative Analysis of Genetically Engineered Bt Corn and non-Bt Corn by Using Quantitative Dietary Exposure Assessment Modeling

    Get PDF
In this study, we investigate the long-term exposure (20 weeks) to fumonisin B1 (FB1) in grower-finisher pigs by conducting a quantitative exposure assessment (QEA). Our analytical approach involved both deterministic and semi-stochastic modeling for dietary comparative analyses of FB1 exposures originating from genetically engineered Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)-corn, conventional non-Bt corn and distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) derived from Bt and/or non-Bt corn. Results from both deterministic and semi-stochastic demonstrated a distinct difference of FB1 toxicity in feed between Bt corn and non-Bt corn. Semi-stochastic results predicted the lowest FB1 exposure for Bt grain with a mean of 1.5 mg FB1/kg diet and the highest FB1 exposure for a diet consisting of non-Bt grain and non-Bt DDGS with a mean of 7.87 mg FB1/kg diet; the chronic toxicological incipient level of concern is 1.0 mg of FB1/kg of diet. Deterministic results closely mirrored but tended to slightly under predict the mean result for the semi-stochastic analysis. This novel comparative QEA model reveals that diet scenarios where the source of grain is derived from Bt corn presents less potential to induce FB1 toxicity than diets containing non-Bt corn

Situationally edited empathy: an effect of socio-economic structure on individual choice

    Get PDF
Criminological theory still operates with deficient models of the offender as agent, and of social influences on the agent’s decision-making process. This paper takes one ‘emotion’, empathy, which is theoretically of considerable importance in influencing the choices made by agents; particularly those involving criminal or otherwise harmful action. Using a framework not of rational action, but of ‘rationalised action’, the paper considers some of the effects on individual psychology of social, economic, political and cultural structure. It is suggested that the climate-setting effects of these structures promote normative definitions of social situations which allow unempathic, harmful action to be rationalised through the situational editing of empathy. The ‘crime is normal’ argument can therefore be extended to include the recognition that the uncompassionate state of mind of the criminal actor is a reflection of the self-interested values which govern non-criminal action in wider society

The complications of ‘hiring a hubby’: gender relations and the commoditisation of home maintenance in New Zealand

    Get PDF
This paper examines the commoditization of traditionally male domestic tasks through interviews with handymen who own franchises in the company ‘Hire a Hubby’ in New Zealand and homeowners who have paid for home repair tasks to be done. Discussions of the commoditization of traditionally female tasks in the home have revealed the emotional conflicts of paying others to care as well as the exploitative and degrading conditions that often arise when work takes place behind closed doors. By examining the working conditions and relationships involved when traditionally male tasks are paid for, this paper raises important questions about the valuing of reproductive labour and the production of gendered identities. The paper argues that while working conditions and rates of pay for ‘hubbies’ are better than those for people undertaking commoditized forms of traditionally female domestic labour, the negotiation of this work is still complex and implicated in gendered relations and identities. Working on the home was described by interviewees as an expression of care for family and a performance of the ‘right’ way to be a ‘Kiwi bloke’ and a father. Paying others to do this labour can imply a failure in a duty of care and in the performance of masculinity
