Woodworkers in the furniture industry are exposed to wood dust in their workplaces. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of occupational wood dust exposure on the nasal mucociliary transport rates (NMTRs) in woodworkers. Twenty five woodworkers and 30 healthy controls were included in this study. Wood dust concentration in workplaces was measured using the sampling device. 99m Tc-macroaggregated albumin (99mTc-MAA) rhinoscintigraphy was performed, and NMTR was calculated in all cases. In statistical analysis, an independent samples t-test was used to compare NMTR of woodworkers and control subjects. We found that the mean NMTR of the woodworkers was lower than that of the healthy controls. However, there was not a statistically significant difference between them (P = 0.066). In conclusion, our findings suggested that wood dust exposure may not impair nasal mucociliary transport rate in woodworkers employed in joinery workshops

Concha bullosa pyocele is an uncommon disorder and occurs when concha bullosa becomes infected. In this study, a case of massive concha bullosa in a 30-year old woman, who had been complained about nasal obstruc-tion and headache for 4 years was reported. Anterior nasal examination revealed a massive mass on right side. Computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses showed a septal deviation and a right intranasal mass without causing bone destruction at neighboring struc-tures. Under general anesthesia, partial middle turbinate resection was performed by transnasal endoscopic technique. No complication occurred during or after op-eration. At follow up examinations no complain was noti-fied by patient and nasal passage of patient was found to completely open. Computerized tomography following 6 months of intervention revealed no intranasal lesion or mass. The case was presented in order to attract atten-tion to intranasal concha bullosa pyocele in the diferen-tial diagnosis of patients with nasal obstruction and headache

Aim: In this study, we aimed to investigate outcome of the endoscopic posterior cordotomy (EPC) operation in patients with bilateral abductor vocal cord paralysis (BAVCP), between January 1997 and March 2006 at Ear-Nose-Throat Department of Çukurova University Medical Faculty.Materials and Methods: The major cause of BAVCP was thyroidectomy operation (87.5%). We performed bilateral cordotomy only in two patients and unilateral cordotomy in the remaining 38 patients. In postoperative period, we assessed the patients both subjectively and objectively. Results: The success ratio was % 87.5 with the first intervention. Only 5 patients (12.5%) needed a revision operation. In subjective assessment, 23 patients found to had a good postoperative exercise tolerance (57.5%), and 17 patients had very good postoperative exercise tolerance (42.5%). In postoperative period, alterations of respiration and voice were investigated in 26 patients objectively. We used peak expiratory flow (PEF) measurement for assessment of respiration function. We found a significantly increased PEF value after endoscopic posterior cordotomy compared with preoperative period (p=0.004). Conclusion: In conclusion, unilateral EPC operation was seen as safe, effective, easy to do and short duration method for bilateral BAVC

Purpose: In present study, we investigated voice quality of the patients with bilateral vocal cord paralysis who had endoscopic posterior cordotomy operation between January 1997 and March 2006 years in Ear-Nose-Throat Department of Çukurova University Medical Faculty. Methods: We performed bilateral cordotomy only in two patients, while the other 38 patients underwent unilateral cordotomy. In postoperative period, the changes of voice were investigated subjectively in all patients and objectively in 26 of them. We examined change of voice quality by maximum fonation time (MFT), S/Z letters time ratio, perturbation of frequency (jitter) and perturbation of amplitude (shimmer). Results:We found statistically significant deteriorations in postoperative period compared with preoperative period in the view point of MFT (<0.001), S/Z ratio (<0.001), jitter (p=0.001) and shimmer (p=0.019). Conclusion: There was statistically significant decrease in voice quality but this decrease did not affect the daily life of the patients

Investigation of Power Flow Effect of Serial and Parallel FACTS Devices

    No full text
It is difficult to increase the capacity of the transmission system by establishing new lines or switching to a new voltage level to meet the rapidly rising electricity demand. Thus, there is an increased need for power flow controllers that can increase the capacity of the existing transmission line and control power flows in predetermined transmission corridors. For this reason, in recent years a new class of controllers has emerged called Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS). It is very important to investigate the advantages of FACTS devices and to model these devices so that power systems can be operated in steady state. In this study, a comprehensive modeling of the most popular FACTS devices for power flow operation was performed. Power flow studies were first performed using the Newton Raphson method for an IEEE 5-bus power system without any FACTS devices. Then, different FACTS controllers were added to the system to perform power flow studies. As a result of the power flow studies performed, it was observed that the FACTS controllers increased the capacity of the existing transmission line and contributed to the voltage stability

    No full text
Objective: In this study, we aimed to investigate the acoustic, perceptual and aerodynamic changes of voice after adenotonsillectomy by using objective methods. Methods: Thirty children, who underwent adenotonsillectomy surgery were included. Voice samples were recorded 1 day before and 1 month after the surgery. LingWAVES programme was used as voice analysis program. Mean, maximum and minimum fundamental frequency, Jitter, Shimmer, Glottal to Noise Excitation ratio, Irregularity, Noise, Overall Severity, S time, Z time, S/Z ratio, and Maximum Phonation Time parameters were recorded and compared. Results: Shimmer, irregularity, Overall Severity, S/Z Time parameters were significantly lower (p=0.001) and Maximum Phonation Time significantly higher (p=0.001) in the postoperative period than preoperative period. In contrast, no significant differences were observed in the mean fundamental frequency, maximum fundamental frequency, minimum fundamental frequency, jitter, Glottal to Noise Excitation, S time and Z time (p>0.05). Conclusion: The changes in some acoustic, aerodynamic and perceptual parameters were monitored after adenotonsillectomy. Therefore, the families of children who underwent adeotonsillectomy should be warned for any possible changes in voice colors after surgery
