    Determination of nitrofurantoin and fosfomycin susceptibility among urinary Escherichia coli isolates

    Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common infections. For treatment of UTIs, there are limited antibiotics due to increased resistance among uropathogens. Two older antibiotics; Nitrofurantoin and Fosfomycin have become novel oral therapeutic options against uropathogens. Aim of the study was to identify UTI causing micro-organisms and evaluate in-vitro activity of nitrofurantoin and fosfomycin against most common isolated organism (E. coli).Methods: Results of urine samples culture and susceptibility testing over a period of 1 year were analysed and included in this study.Results: Micro-organisms were isolated from 568 urine samples. Most commonly isolated organism was Escherichia coli (40.50%), followed by Klebsiella spp. (20.07%) and Staphylococcus spp. (17.07%). Susceptibility of E. coli to nitrofurantoin and fosfomycin was 91.74% and 65.65% respectively. Conclusion: Good activity of nitrofurantoin and fosfomycin against E. coli indicates that these two drugs are potential therapeutic alternatives for urinary tract infections

    Spectrum of endometrial lesions observed on histopathological examination of endometrial samples in women with abnormal uterine bleeding

    Background: Abnormal uterine bleeding is one of the common gynecological complaints of women of all age groups. Histopathological study of endometrial biopsy and curettage samples is an effective diagnostic modality that can be used to identify cause of AUB at its earliest. This study was done to investigate the various endometrial causes of AUB that frequently come to our hospital and their incidence in various age groups i.e. reproductive, perimenopausal and postmenopausal.Methods: This study was conducted on 108 patients who clinically presented with AUB and had their endometrial biopsy and curettage specimens sent to the histopathology department of our tertiary care hospital and teaching centre, located in Uttar Pradesh from June 2018 to May 2019. The endometrial patterns were observed, and their frequencies and percentages were computed and classified age group wise.Results: These studies included patients with age range from 19 to 77 years. The predominant age group with AUB was reproductive age group (<40 years). The most common histopathological finding in this study was normal menstrual pattern (48.15 %). The endometrial pathologies observed were hormonal imbalance and pill effect (22.22%), atrophic endometrium (10.19%), chronic endometritis (5.56%), benign endometrial polyp (4.63%), gestation products (3.70%), endometrial hyperplasia (3.70%), and endometrial carcinoma (1.85%). Conclusion: The most commonly known cause of AUB in reproductive age group is due to hormonal imbalance. Endometrial hyperplasia and carcinoma are usually more common in the perimenopausal and postmenopausal age groups. Overall, in patients with no organic cause of AUB, normal cyclical endometrial pattern is the most prevalent endometrial pattern observed.Conclusions: The most commonly known cause of AUB in reproductive age group is due to hormonal imbalance.     Multilocular Unicystic Ameloblastoma of Mandible

    Introduction. We report a rare case of unicystic ameloblastoma (UA) of mandible which showed multilocular radiolucency on the left side of mandible on radiographic examination which is very unusual, and the majority of the cases of UAs till date has been reported of unilocular radiolucency. On histopathological examination, an odontogenic cystic lining that proliferates that intraluminally resembling ameloblastomatous epithelium was observed, leading to a definitive diagnosis of unicystic ameloblastoma. Case Presentation. A 42-year-old male patient presented with a swelling on the left side of the mandible extending from 33 to 36. Radiographically, it showed a multilocular radiolucent lesion resembling odontogenic cyst; however, the final diagnosis was made on histopathological ground with the inclusion of radiological and clinical features. Conclusion. It can be concluded that at present, histopathologic examination is the most sensitive tool for differentiating between odontogenic cysts and UAs. However, both clinical and radiologic findings share equal contribution to the final diagnosis
