Towards hybrid circuit quantum electrodynamics with quantum dots

    Get PDF
Cavity quantum electrodynamics allows one to study the interaction between light and matter at the most elementary level. The methods developed in this field have taught us how to probe and manipulate individual quantum systems like atoms and superconducting quantum bits with an exquisite accuracy. There is now a strong effort to extend further these methods to other quantum systems, and in particular hybrid quantum dot circuits. This could turn out to be instrumental for a noninvasive study of quantum dot circuits and a realization of scalable spin quantum bit architectures. It could also provide an interesting platform for quantum simulation of simple fermion-boson condensed matter systems. In this short review, we discuss the experimental state of the art for hybrid circuit quantum electrodynamics with quantum dots, and we present a simple theoretical modeling of experiments.Comment: Minor differences with published versio

Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2012.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 149-151).In 2050, global oil supply will decline to 1/8 of today's. Migrating to the Post-Oil Era, over 10000's km2 of Powerscapes - the solar-collecting infrastructure - will be gradually constructed across the arid desert, for the indispensable production of solar energy to sustain Middle East's economy and global energy supply. The contingency of introducing the Powerscapes is a spatial problem. Unlike a powerplant that burns coal or oil, the scale of the Powerscapes is dramatically extensive. The inserted Powerscapes will interiorize the desert landscape and shelter the ground from the harsh direct sunlight that will be captured for power supply. Transformation in biological development, meteorological activity and geological phenomena will be inevitable, but the change that reduces the heat and evaporation rate will make its climatatic dynamics more habitable for human, animals and plants - an invaluable opportunity for the synthesis of energy production and climate conditioning. This thesis investigates the strategic programming and spatial configuration of such constructed landscape, capitalized by its new temporal characteristics, and sensitively adapting to it. Layers of material will be organized to form "Strata" of temporal conditions to be stretched across the landscape. To forge a symbiotic relationship between Solar Collection, human habitation, agricultural production and wild nature, the layers of material will delineate, push, flip, intersect, puncuate, wrap and merge, responding to programmatic needs and geographical dynamics that the natural geology and the Powerscapes together create. Such adaptive organization also permits certain geometrical and configuration logic to reiterate themselves in multiple scales, formulating a fractalic field with recursive part to whole relationships.by Chun Lun Otto Ng.M.Arch

Youth work and "youth at risk" in the Netherlands: a review of literature

The point of this article is to explore the rationales for action of frontline social professionals who are dealing with marginal young people : What is actually done about marginality, beyond policy intentions and social practice ? This question is addressed on the basis of a literature review into youth work in the Netherlands. First, the development of youth work as a field of social practice is outlined as well as the extent to which the issue of the marginalised youth has been addressed by youth workers all along the 20th century. Second, the current challenges for Dutch youth work regarding «deprived youth» are explored together with the position of the Dutch youth workers within in the context of the «hard line» discussion according to the available literature. The article shows that persistent attention has been paid to marginal youth as a social problem in the academic and professional world over the last decades. However, there is amazingly little academic knowledge about youth work with regard to marginalized youth in spite of the topicality of the issue of «youth at risk» in the Netherlands and despite the fact that many observers state that youth workers have a role to play regarding the current problems of «youth at risk»

This paper presents some results of a research project named Proximité et citoyenneté en milieu urbain. Les leçons de la pratique au Québec, aux Pays-Bas et en Espagne undertaken with the support of the French Government’s Citoyenneté urbaine (PUCA) Program. The aim of this exploratory project is to analyze outreach practices that seek to promote participation of people in very difficult social and economic situations. Proximity and participation are the two main axes of these practices. The research was carried out in Amsterdam, Montreal and Barcelona, and here we present the results for the two latter cities. The focus here is on the primary results that have to do with «existential proximity», i.e., social interventions carried out by people in similar situations to the target population. Peer workers or pairs aidants have a key role in reaching out to people with little contact with services and institutions, and have a decisive role in enabling the participation of marginalized groups. We identify some key elements of such practices, based on interviews with practitioners, peer workers and third sector and public service users.
