    A comparative study of acute phase protein concentrations in historical and modern broiler breeding lines

    Acute-phase proteins (APP) are secreted from the liver as a result of inflammation or infection and are measurable in serum and plasma. To determine whether the constitutive APP serum amyloid A (SAA), alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), ceruloplasmin (Cp), and ovotransferrin (Ovt) have changed as a result of selection for improved production and growth characteristics over the last 40 yr two historical broilers lines were compared to a modern line of the same lineage. Serum was harvested from blood samples taken from the 3 broiler lines on days 10, 17, and 20, and the APP concentrations were determined using immunoassay methods. Most of the significant changes observed were age related, with SAA and Cp having significantly lower concentrations at day 20 than days 10 and 17 in all lines. The only significant difference between lines was observed at day 20 on which both Cp (P = 0.01) and AGP (P = 0.03) were significantly higher in the modern line than the 90s line, though no significant differences were noted between the modern and 70s line. When evaluating the difference in APP concentrations between males (Cx) and females (Px) across all 3 lines, females had a higher SAA at day 17 and lower SAA at day 20, P = 0.0078 and 0.0327 respectively, and males had a significantly higher Ovt on days 17 and 20 (P = 0.0002 and P = 0.003 respectively). These results reveal that APP concentrations fluctuate over this early period of growth and that the changes in APP serum concentration appear uniform between 3 lines with very contrasting selection history, suggesting the improvements made in meat production efficiency since the 1970s have not affected the circulating concentrations of these constitutively expressed APP

    Towards more mature web maintenance practices for accessibility.

    This paper proposes a need to differentiate Web maintenance from traditional software maintenance. The maintenance of a Web site is different than that of software as it is under constant maintenance and works by default in "modified environments". Building on the authors' previous work of automated quality measurement, a case study of large scale Web maintenance activity is described which focuses on a change to ensure that Web pages are accessible to users with disabilities. The results of the study show that organisations which have a clear and committed maintenance strategy and provide their staff with appropriate tools and training have better quality Web sites

    Period- and mirror-maps for the quartic K3

    We study in detail mirror symmetry for the quartic K3 surface in P3 and the mirror family obtained by the orbifold construction. As explained by Aspinwall and Morrison, mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces can be entirely described in terms of Hodge structures. (1) We give an explicit computation of the Hodge structures and period maps for these families of K3 surfaces. (2) We identify a mirror map, i.e. an isomorphism between the complex and symplectic deformation parameters, and explicit isomorphisms between the Hodge structures at these points. (3) We show compatibility of our mirror map with the one defined by Morrison near the point of maximal unipotent monodromy. Our results rely on earlier work by Narumiyah-Shiga, Dolgachev and Nagura-Sugiyama.Comment: 29 pages, 3 figure

    Differential Cross Section for Higgs Boson Production Including All-Orders Soft Gluon Resummation

    The transverse momentum QTQ_T distribution is computed for inclusive Higgs boson production at the energy of the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We focus on the dominant gluon-gluon subprocess in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and incorporate contributions from the quark-gluon and quark-antiquark channels. Using an impact-parameter bb-space formalism, we include all-orders resummation of large logarithms associated with emission of soft gluons. Our resummed results merge smoothly at large QTQ_T with the fixed-order expectations in perturbative quantum chromodynamics, as they should, with no need for a matching procedure. They show a high degree of stability with respect to variation of parameters associated with the non-perturbative input at low QTQ_T. We provide distributions dσ/dydQTd\sigma/dy dQ_T for Higgs boson masses from MZM_Z to 200 GeV. The average transverse momentum at zero rapidity yy grows approximately linearly with mass of the Higgs boson over the range MZ<mh≃0.18mh+18M_Z < m_h \simeq 0.18 m_h + 18 ~GeV. We provide analogous results for ZZ boson production, for which we compute ≃25 \simeq 25 GeV. The harder transverse momentum distribution for the Higgs boson arises because there is more soft gluon radiation in Higgs boson production than in ZZ production.Comment: 42 pages, latex, 26 figures.     Iodine soil dynamics and methods of measurement: a review

    Iodine is an essential micronutrient for human health: insufficient intake can have multiple effects on development and growth, affecting approximately 1.9 billion people worldwide. Previous reviews have focussed on iodine analysis in environmental and biological samples, however, no such review exists for the determination of iodine fractionation and speciation in soils. This article reviews the geodynamics of both stable 127I and the long-lived isotope 129I (t1/2 ¼ 15.7 million years), alongside the analytical methods for determining iodine concentrations in soils, including consideration of sample preparation. The ability to measure total iodine concentration in soils has developed significantly from rudimentary spectrophotometric analysis methods to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Analysis with ICP-MS has been reported as the best method for determining iodine concentrations in a range of environmental samples and soils due to developments in extraction procedures and sensitivity, with extremely good detection limits typically <mg L_1. The ability of ICP-MS to measure iodine and its capabilities to couple on-line separation tools has the significance to develop the understanding of iodine geodynamics.     Isolating a light Higgs boson from the di-photon background at the LHC

    We compute the QCD corrections to the gluon fusion subprocess gg to gamma gamma, which forms an important component of the background to the search for a light Higgs boson at the LHC. We study the dependence of the improved pp to gamma gamma X background calculation on the factorization and renormalization scales, on various choices for photon isolation cuts, and on the rapidities of the photons.     Agronomic biofortification of leafy vegetables grown in an Oxisol, Alfisol and Vertisol with isotopically labelled selenium (77Se)

    Selenium biofortification of crops is a proven technology for improving dietary nutrition. This study used isotopically labelled selenate (>99% enriched 77Se) to assess uptake and Se availability to two green vegetables, Brassica napus L (B. napus) and Amaranthus retroflexus L (A. retroflexus) grown in three contrasting Malawi soils: a Vertisol (calcareous), Alfisol (moderately acidic) and Oxisol (acidic). Plants were grown under glasshouse conditions (4 replicates; 6 kg soil per pot) following application of 77Se-enriched selenate at rates equivalent to 0, 10 and 20 g ha−1. Leaves were harvested at fortnightly intervals and the plants were then allowed to re-grow, to simulate cultivation practice. Leaf samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for selenium isotopes (77Se and 78Se). The isotopic data were processed to quantify the contribution to plant Se concentration from the fertilizer and the soil. Both concentration and uptake of the fertilizer 77Se declined sharply with sequential harvests due to progressive fixation of 77Se in the soil rather than exhaustion (by uptake) of the Se applied. Initially the bioavailability of fertilizer Se was three orders of magnitude greater than the soil Se but this declined to the same order of magnitude by the end of the trial. Application of 77Se had no effect on uptake of soil-derived Se. There were marked differences between the three soils studied. The relative bio-availability of the fertilizer Se followed the sequence (Vertisol > Alfisol > Oxisol) but the two crops showed the same trend in decline of fertilizer Se uptake. Thus, fixation of selenium in the soils studied was sufficiently rapid that Se biofortification of green vegetables subject to several harvests would require multiple applications during the growing season

    On the accretion disc properties in eclipsing dwarf nova EM Cyg

    In this paper we analyzed the behavior of the unusual dwarf nova EM Cyg using the data obtained in April-October, 2007 in Vyhorlat observatory (Slovak Republic) and in September, 2006 in Crimean Astrophysical Observatory (Ukraine). During our observations EM Cyg has shown outbursts in every 15-40 days. Because on the light curves of EM Cyg the partial eclipse of an accretion disc is observed we applied the eclipse mapping technique to reconstruct the temperature distribution in eclipsed parts of the disc.     Agronomic iodine biofortification of leafy vegetables grown in Vertisols, Oxisols and Alfisols

    Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) in sub-Saharan African countries are related to low dietary I intake and generally combatted through salt iodisation. Agronomic biofortification of food crops may be an alternative approach. This study assessed the effectiveness of I biofortification of green vegetables (Brassica napus L and Amaranthus retroflexus L.) grown in tropical soils with contrasting chemistry and fertility. Application rates of 0, 5 and 10 kg ha−1 I applied to foliage or soil were assessed. Leaves were harvested fortnightly for ~ 2 months after I application before a second crop was grown to assess the availability of residual soil I. A separate experiment was used to investigate storage of I within the plants. Iodine concentration and uptake in sequential harvests showed a sharp drop within 28 days of I application in all soil types for all I application levels and methods. This rapid decline likely reflects I fixation in the soil. Iodine biofortification increased I uptake and concentration in the vegetables to a level useful for increasing dietary I intake and could be a feasible way to reduce IDD in tropical regions. However, biofortification of green vegetables which are subject to multiple harvests requires repeated I applications

    Spatial prediction of the concentration of selenium (Se) in grain across part of Amhara Region, Ethiopia

    Grain and soil were sampled across a large part of Amhara, Ethiopia in a study motivated by prior evidence of selenium (Se) deficiency in the Region's population. The grain samples (teff, Eragrostis tef, and wheat, Triticum aestivum) were analysed for concentration of Se and the soils were analysed for various properties, including Se concentration measured in different extractants. Predictive models for concentration of Se in the respective grains were developed, and the predicted values, along with observed concentrations in the two grains were represented by a multivariate linear mixed model in which selected covariates, derived from remote sensor observations and a digital elevation model, were included as fixed effects. In all modelling steps the selection of predictors was done using false discovery rate control, to avoid over-fitting, and using an α-investment procedure to maximize the statistical power to detect significant relationships by ordering the tests in a sequence based on scientific understanding of the underlying processes likely to control Se concentration in grain. Cross-validation indicated that uncertainties in the empirical best linear unbiased predictions of the Se concentration in both grains were well-characterized by the prediction error variances obtained from the model. The predictions were displayed as maps, and their uncertainty was characterized by computing the probability that the true concentration of Se in grain would be such that a standard serving would not provide the recommended daily allowance of Se. The spatial variation of grain Se was substantial, concentrations in wheat and teff differed but showed the same broad spatial pattern. Such information could be used to target effective interventions to address Se deficiency, and the general procedure used for mapping could be applied to other micronutrients and crops in similar settings
