    HybridMiner: Mining Maximal Frequent Itemsets Using Hybrid Database Representation Approach

    In this paper we present a novel hybrid (arraybased layout and vertical bitmap layout) database representation approach for mining complete Maximal Frequent Itemset (MFI) on sparse and large datasets. Our work is novel in terms of scalability, item search order and two horizontal and vertical projection techniques. We also present a maximal algorithm using this hybrid database representation approach.     Wireless technology and clinical influences in healthcare setting: an Indian case study

    This chapter argues that current techniques used in the domain of Information Systems is not adequate for establishing determinants of wireless technology in a clinical setting. Using data collected from India, this chapter conducted a first order regrssion modeling (factor analysis) and then a second order regression modeling (SEM) to establish the determinants of clinical influences as a result of using wireless technology in healthcare settings. As information systems professionals, the authors conducted a qualitative data collection to understand the domain prior to employing a quantitative technique, thus providing rigour as well as personal relevance. The outcomes of this study has clearly established that there are a number of influences such as the organisational factors in determining the technology acceptance and provides evidence that trivial factors such as perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness are no longer acceptable as the factors of technology acceptance

    Reactions and perceptions of healthcare professional towards wireless devices in healthcare environment in the developing world: a case of Pakistan

    This study explored reactions and perceptions of medical professionals in the use of wireless technology in the Pakistani healthcare setting. 300 professionals were surveyed with 97 survey forms returned. The regression analysis indicates that clinical performance and better quality of services would be the determinants in using wireless technology in Pakistani healthcare. These medical professionals felt that in order to continuously use the technology, training and technical supports are essential. They also felt that the introduction of such a technology would result in the attraction of more practitioners, save time, save effort and provide high quality information.     Cloned Microglias with Novel Delivery System in Multiple Sclerosis

    Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory neurological disease of the Central Nervous System (CNS), characterized by demyelination and activation of microglia. Mitochondrial mutations and dysfunctions in microglial cells are thought to contribute to the detrimental effects of neuroinflammation seen in MS. The Somatic Nuclear Transfer (SCNT) technology offers a more practical mode of therapy in MS, this method would attempt to dilute and/or progressively replace the mutated and activated microglia with cloned Olfactory Ensheathing Cells (OEC) with remyelinating and scavenging properties which would attempt to limit the progression of MS. Applying SCNTderived Embryonic Stem (ES) cells based therapy by cloning Olfactory Ensheathing Cells (OEC), engineered with an autologous nuclear component of the recipient OEC with a healthy donor oocyte. The inner cell mass of the subsequently developed blastocyst would be the source to generate the radial microglia to be used for cell therapy in MS. The novel proposed transcribrial route device offers a painless mode of cell transplantation to the brain. This mode of generating cloned glia and its transplantation to the brain is expected to replace the mutated and activated microglia of the patients with MS and use the regenerative and remyelinating and scavenging properties of the OEC’s, as has been seen in clinical trials in patients with spinal cord injuries. The use of SCNT to develop isogenic ES cellbased therapies for the prevention and treatment of MS associated with mtDNA mutations may open a new avenue of designer’s targeted cell therapy unique for the patients with MS.     Exploratory study to explore the role of ICT in the process of knowledge management in an Indian business environment

    In the 21st century and the emergence of a digital economy, knowledge and the knowledge base economy are rapidly growing. To effectively be able to understand the processes involved in the creating, managing and sharing of knowledge management in the business environment is critical to the success of an organization. This study builds on the previous research of the authors on the enablers of knowledge management by identifying the relationship between the enablers of knowledge management and the role played by information communication technologies (ICT) and ICT infrastructure in a business setting. This paper provides the findings of a survey collected from the four major Indian cities (Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Villupuram) regarding their views and opinions about the enablers of knowledge management in business setting. A total of 80 organizations participated in the study with 100 participants in each city. The results show that ICT and ICT infrastructure can play a critical role in the creating, managing and sharing of knowledge in an Indian business environment

    mHealth-Based Microfluidic Lab-on-a-Chip for International Health Security

    The increasing threats of emerging and reemerging infectious disease outbreaks demand research and development (R&D) of effective and fit-for-all-purpose tools and technologies for international public health security. Recent advances in biomedical engineering, mostly related to the convergence of communication and network technology in health, i.e., mobile health with microfluidic Lab-on-a-Chip technology can improve the international public health crises and employ in international public health security. Lab-on-a-Chip technology is now commonly found in most research centers, hospitals, and clinics where health care infrastructure is weak, and access to quality and timely medical care is challenging. Microfluidic devices—also known as Lab-on-a-Chip (LoC)—are an alternative for accessible, cost-effective, and early detection medical trials. The mHealth-based microfluidic LoC technology has been under rapid development, and they are becoming influential tools in a wide range of biomedical research and international public health applications. The perspective in this chapter demonstrates a potentially transformative opportunity for the deployment of mHealth with LoC with the fabrication protocols and their potential for strengthening and improving the international public health security. This attempt is not conclusive and exhaustive, and it is anticipated that such a discussion will enable the exchange of ideas between biomedical engineering, microfluidic LoC technology professionals, international public health, and health security experts
