The Secret Life of Comics: Socializing and Seriality

This is an accepted manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in The Serials Librarian, Volume 74 issue 1-4Dr. Carol Tilley delivered a vision session to the 32nd annual meeting of NASIG in Indianapolis, Indiana, on the history of comics readership and libraries, particularly in the United States during the mid-20th century, and the relevance of comics to libraries in the present. It raised awareness for the audience about progress that has been made on comics collecting and programming, as well as the need for librarians to continue and heighten their enthusiasm for this work. It also reminded us that comics tell stories and communicate ideas. They are part of our cultural heritage and they have been for decades. In questions and answers, the audience discussed both the challenges and the rewards of acquiring and organizing comics at their own institutions.https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/144778/1/Comics_and_Serials_NASIG_32nd_Meeting_Vision_Session.pdfDescription of Comics_and_Serials_NASIG_32nd_Meeting_Vision_Session.pdf : Accepted manuscrip

Deal or No Deal? Evaluating Big Deals and Their Journals

This paper presents methods to develop metrics that compare Big Deal journal packages and the journals within those packages. Deal-level metrics guide selection of a Big Deal for termination. Journal-level metrics guide selection of individual subscriptions from journals previously provided by a terminated deal. The paper argues that, while the proposed metrics provide helpful quantitative data for comparative analysis, selection of individual subscriptions must also involve informed judgment about a library’s subject coverage needs and alternative sources of access. The paper also discusses how replacing a Big Deal with a reduced number of individual subscriptions may affect the collections budget, use of other resources, and interlibrary loan.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/96846/1/178.full.pd

Developing Standards for Emerging Forms of Assessment: The NISO Altmetrics Initiative

New types of calculation methodologies, called altmetrics, which is short for alternative metrics, are increasingly being used to measure and analyze the scholarly communication networks of researchers, librarians, publishers and funding organizations. By applying altmetrics to emergent online forums like Twitter, Academia.edu, Mendeley and ResearchGate, studies have shown that early measures of social attention to a work or body of work can be correlated with later usage and citation statistics to predict the diffusion and impact of research output. However, standards for altmetrics are needed to build confidence and trust among the information community.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/117512/1/Carpenter et al NASIG conf proceedings final.docxDescription of Carpenter et al NASIG conf proceedings final.docx : Word document revised with corrections from proof

Citation Analysis to Assist Selection in Kinesiology

    No full text
This article presents a citation analysis of articles published in 2011 from 11 kinesiology journals. The results of the citation analysis of 11 kinesiology journals are compared to a citation analysis of articles published in 2011 by faculty in the School of Kinesiology, University of Michigan. Comparing the four areas of kinesiology, Movement Science, Athletic Training, Sports Management, and Physical Education, the results show that articles published in Movement Science and Athletic Training cited a higher percentage of journal articles than articles published in Sports Management and Physical Education. While some of the materials cited went as far back as 1874, the mean age ranged from 1996 to 2004. Human Kinetics was the most cited publisher and the American Journal of Sports Medicine was the most cited journal. The University of Michigan Library owns 75% of the materials cited in the publications cited by School of Kinesiology faculty. Faculty in the School of Kinesiology cited many textbooks, a format not actively collected by the library before this analysis.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/109724/1/kinesiology article Deep Blue.docxDescription of kinesiology article Deep Blue.docx : Final version of article submitted for publicatio

Creation, Transformation, Dissemination and Preservation: Advocating for Scholarly Communication

Scholarly communication is often thought of as the preservation of knowledge. However, it in fact influences the creation, transformation and dissemination of knowledge. The new norms are multiple authorships, inter-institutional and international collaboration, and communication through social media. Libraries and consortia are playing new roles in the scholarly communication cycle.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/110980/2/22-Bahnmaier.zipDescription of 22-Bahnmaier.zip : Main article and figure
