    Synthetic polyester absorbent materials

    Get PDF
The invention provides synthetic polymeric fibers which have utility as temporary acquisition/distribution absorbent structures and permanent storage/distribution absorbent structures in a wide range of absorbent products such as diapers, feminine napkins, and adult incontinent pads. These fibers are short, highly distorted, and bulky characterized by lengths between 2 and 37 mm, short-range distortion factors between 5 and 70, long-range distortion factors between 0.05 and 0.9, and single fiber bulk factors between 0.5 and 10.0. They may or may not have capillary channels on the surface. The advantages of these materials are their increased absorbency, reduced wet collapse at low densities, reduced rewet, reduced loss of liquid under pressure, and their ability to be desorbed by distribution materials such as capillary channeled fibers or by conventional storage materials such as fluff pulp or superabsorbent polymer fiber or powder

    Process of making fibers

    Get PDF
Disclosed are fibers that are capable of spontaneously transporting certain fluids, for example aqueous fluids, such as water, on their surfaces. The fibers, especially in the form of tow, can be incorporated into absorbent articles, such as diapers, in order to transport fluids to more effectively utilize the absorbent portion of the article. The fibers can be synthetically coated with absorbent materials

Complex pathological fracture and severe bone disease as a presenting manifestation of multiple myeloma: a case report

    Get PDF
Multiple myeloma is a clonal plasma cell disorder that commonly affect bones, leading to characteristic bone findings on imaging studies. Here, we present the case of a male patient in his late-forties who presented with back pain and was found to have lytic lesions in skull and pelvis on X-ray. Further workup confirmed the diagnosis of Multiple myeloma and the patient was started on chemotherapy and denosumab. This case highlights the importance of early recognition of characteristic bone findings on imaging studies and conducting a thorough workup in patients with suspected multiple myeloma

Enhancing hemophilia A management: emicizumab as a cost-effective adjunct to standard therapy for inhibitor patients

    Get PDF
This case report discusses the cost-effectiveness of emicizumab + low dose recombinant factor VIIa (rFVIIa) therapy in management of mild hemophilia A with inhibitors. Initial treatment with recombinant factor VIII was complicated by inhibitor development, leading to recurrent bleeding and hematoma formation. After administering full dose rFVIIa to patient for controlling bleeding episodes initially, patient was transitioned to emicizumab alongside low-dose recombinant factor VIIa, which proved efficacious and cost-effective. This case highlights the potential of emicizumab to alleviate the financial burden on patients and healthcare systems, improving treatment access and outcomes for a broader hemophilia patient population

UC: a language for the connection machine

    Get PDF
n designing parallel languages, the concern for defining a simple virtual machine must be balanced against the need to efficiently map a program on a specific architecture. UC addresses this problem by separating the programming task from efficiency considerations. UC programs are designed using a small set of constructs that include reduction, parallel assignment, and fixed-point computation. The language also provides a map section that may optionally be used by a programmer to specify data mappings for the program. The authors describe the UC constructs and their implementation on the Connection Machine. They also present measurements of the compiler for simple benchmarks

Bundles of fibers useful for moving liquids at high fluxes and acquisition/distribution structures that use the bundles

    Get PDF
The ability to transport body liquids in consumer products such as diapers, incontinents and feminine napkins is a key factor in their performance. This invention is designed to provide specific high fluxes (volume of liquid/(time*mass of polymer) of aqueous liquids in designated directions using bundles of new specially designed fibers. The key factors for the bundles are a high specific adhesion for the liquid of interest, a high specific volume of the bundle itself, and alignment of the fibers within the bundle. The invention includes novel liquid acquisition/distribution systems and absorbent products that include a liquid acquisition/distribution system which may incorporate the novel bundles of fibers
