Chi-square test on candidate events from CW signal coherent searches
In a blind search for continuous gravitational wave signals scanning a wide
frequency band one looks for candidate events with significantly large values
of the detection statistic. Unfortunately, a noise line in the data may also
produce a moderately large detection statistic.
In this paper, we describe how we can distinguish between noise line events
and actual continuous wave (CW) signals, based on the shape of the detection
statistic as a function of the signal's frequency. We will analyze the case of
a particular detection statistic, the F statistic, proposed by Jaranowski,
Krolak, and Schutz.
We will show that for a broad-band 10 hour search, with a false dismissal
rate smaller than 1e-6, our method rejects about 70 % of the large candidate
events found in a typical data set from the second science run of the Hanford
LIGO interferometer.Comment: proceedings of GWDAW8, 2003 conference, 12pages, 6 figure
Hybrids between Pseudoplatystoma corruscans and P. reticulatum (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) previously reported in the Upper Paraná River are likely escapes from aquaculture farms: evidence from microsatellite markers
ABSTRACT The production of hybrids of the 'pintado', Pseudoplatystoma corruscans (Spix & Agassiz, 1829) and 'cachara', Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum (Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889) in captivity has generated many concerns about the possibility of introduction of farmed hybrids into natural environments. In the last decade, hybrids between these species, known as 'pintachara' or 'cachapinta', were reported from different regions of the Upper Paraná River basin. Prospection of these hybrids is important in order to orient conservation programs for the species involved. Knowledge of the presence of these hybrids will direct conservation strategies towards prevention and/or mitigation of the effects of cross breeding in natural populations of P. corruscans (the native species of the genus) and farmed hybrids. In this study, surveyed the larval population using molecular tools to detect the presence and assess the origin (natural hybridization or escapes from fish farms) of hybrids in natural water bodies. Nine microsatellite markers were used to detect signals of hybridization and introgression of P. reticulatum in larvae and adults of P. corruscans in Upper Paraná River basin, between Itaipu Dam and Porto Primavera Dam. The specimens were sampled in the Upper Paraná channel and in tributaries where hybrids had been detected in the past, during two reproductive seasons. Despite of that, no sign of hybridization and introgression was found in the 171 larvae and 75 adults sampled, suggesting that the specimens detected in previous studies had originated from escapes of aquaculture farms
Correlation between Gamma-Ray bursts and Gravitational Waves
The cosmological origin of -ray bursts (GRBs) is now commonly
accepted and, according to several models for the central engine, GRB sources
should also emit at the same time gravitational waves bursts (GWBs). We have
performed two correlation searches between the data of the resonant
gravitational wave detector AURIGA and GRB arrival times collected in the BATSE
4B catalog. No correlation was found and an upper limit \bbox{} on the averaged amplitude of gravitational waves
associated with -ray bursts has been set for the first time.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Case management for frequent users of the emergency department: study protocol of a randomised controlled trial
BACKGROUND: We devised a randomised controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of an intervention based on case management care for frequent emergency department users. The aim of the intervention is to reduce such patients' emergency department use, to improve their quality of life, and to reduce costs consequent on frequent use. The intervention consists of a combination of comprehensive case management care and standard emergency care. It uses a clinical case management model that is patient-identified, patient-directed, and developed to provide high intensity services. It provides a continuum of hospital- and community-based patient services, which include clinical assessment, outreach referral, and coordination and communication with other service providers.
METHODS/DESIGN: We aim to recruit, during the first year of the study, 250 patients who visit the emergency department of the University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland. Eligible patients will have visited the emergency department 5 or more times during the previous 12 months. Randomisation of the participants to the intervention or control groups will be computer generated and concealed. The statistician and each patient will be blinded to the patient's allocation. Participants in the intervention group (N = 125), additionally to standard emergency care, will receive case management from a team, 1 (ambulatory care) to 3 (hospitalization) times during their stay and after 1, 3, and 5 months, at their residence, in the hospital or in the ambulatory care setting. In between the consultations provided, the patients will have the opportunity to contact, at any moment, the case management team. Participants in the control group (N = 125) will receive standard emergency care only. Data will be collected at baseline and 2, 5.5, 9, and 12 months later, including: number of emergency department visits, quality of life (EuroQOL and WHOQOL), health services use, and relevant costs. Data on feelings of discrimination and patient's satisfaction will also be collected at the baseline and 12 months later.
DISCUSSION: Our study will help to clarify knowledge gaps regarding the positive outcomes (emergency department visits, quality of life, efficiency, and cost-utility) of an intervention based on case management care.

Holographic Renormalization for z=2 Lifshitz Space-Times from AdS
Lifshitz space-times with critical exponent z=2 can be obtained by
dimensional reduction of Schroedinger space-times with critical exponent z=0.
The latter space-times are asymptotically AdS solutions of AdS gravity coupled
to an axion-dilaton system and can be uplifted to solutions of type IIB
supergravity. This basic observation is used to perform holographic
renormalization for 4-dimensional asymptotically z=2 locally Lifshitz
space-times by Scherk-Schwarz dimensional reduction of the corresponding
problem of holographic renormalization for 5-dimensional asymptotically locally
AdS space-times coupled to an axion-dilaton system. We can thus define and
characterize a 4-dimensional asymptotically locally z=2 Lifshitz space-time in
terms of 5-dimensional AdS boundary data. In this setup the 4-dimensional
structure of the Fefferman-Graham expansion and the structure of the
counterterm action, including the scale anomaly, will be discussed. We find
that for asymptotically locally z=2 Lifshitz space-times obtained in this way
there are two anomalies each with their own associated nonzero central charge.
Both anomalies follow from the Scherk--Schwarz dimensional reduction of the
5-dimensional conformal anomaly of AdS gravity coupled to an axion-dilaton
system. Together they make up an action that is of the Horava-Lifshitz type
with nonzero potential term for z=2 conformal gravity.Comment: 32 pages, v2: modified discussion of the central charge
The network structure of visited locations according to geotagged social media photos
Businesses, tourism attractions, public transportation hubs and other points
of interest are not isolated but part of a collaborative system. Making such
collaborative network surface is not always an easy task. The existence of
data-rich environments can assist in the reconstruction of collaborative
networks. They shed light into how their members operate and reveal a potential
for value creation via collaborative approaches. Social media data are an
example of a means to accomplish this task. In this paper, we reconstruct a
network of tourist locations using fine-grained data from Flickr, an online
community for photo sharing. We have used a publicly available set of Flickr
data provided by Yahoo! Labs. To analyse the complex structure of tourism
systems, we have reconstructed a network of visited locations in Europe,
resulting in around 180,000 vertices and over 32 million edges. An analysis of
the resulting network properties reveals its complex structure.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
