    Protein Fractions from Korean Mistletoe ( Viscum Album coloratum

    Mistletoe (Viscum Album coloratum) has been known as a medicinal plant in European and Asian countries. Recent data show that biological activity of mistletoe alleviates hypertension, heart disease, renal failure, and cancer development. In this study, we report the antidiabetic effect of Korean mistletoe extract (KME). KME treatments enhanced the insulin secretion from the pancreatic Ī²-cell without any effects of cytotoxicity. PDX-1 and beta2/neuroD known as transcription factors that regulate the expression of insulin gene were upregulated by treatment of the KME protein fractions isolated by ion-exchange chromatography after ammonium sulfate precipitation. Furthermore, these KME protein fractions significantly lowered the blood glucose level and the volume of drinking water in alloxan induced hyperglycemic mice. Taken together with the findings, it provides new insight that KME might be served as a useful source for the development of medicinal reagent to reduce blood glucose level of type I diabetic patients

    The aim of this study is to enhance the recycled PVC related material property by formulation technology and develop the recycling product processing technology furthermore develop the chemical recycling technology for last stage of PVC wastes. The formulation technology is composed of pre-treatment (crushing, separation etc.) and post-treatment (material ratio, additives, stabilizer etc.) to enhance the recyclate property. The formulation for recycled PVC by application basis and processing technology is applied to produce the structural product for civil and construction application such as pipe fittings and water drainage cap for environmental waterway. Also chemical recycling technology for end life PVC scrap which causes environmental pollution by incineration or landfill is studied for producing hydrocarbon and hydrogen chloride for VCM

    A case of anemia caused by combined vitamin B12 and iron deficiency manifesting as short stature and delayed puberty

    Anemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency resulting from inadequate dietary intake is rare in children in the modern era because of improvements in nutritional status. However, such anemia can be caused by decreased ingestion or impaired absorption and/or utilization of vitamin B12. We report the case of an 18-year-old man with short stature, prepubertal sexual maturation, exertional dyspnea, and severe anemia with a hemoglobin level of 3.3 g/dL. He had a history of small bowel resection from 50 cm below the Treitz ligament to 5 cm above the ileocecal valve necessitated by midgut volvulus in the neonatal period. Laboratory tests showed deficiencies of both vitamin B12 and iron. A bone marrow examination revealed dyserythropoiesis and low levels of hemosiderin particles, and a cytogenetic study disclosed a normal karyotype. After treatment with parenteral vitamin B12 and elemental iron, both anemia and growth showed gradual improvement. This is a rare case that presented with short stature and delayed puberty caused by nutritional deficiency anemia in Korea

    Wedging graphite into graphene and graphene-like platelets by dendritic macromolecules

    We report in situ 'direct' grafting of dendritic macromolecular wedges to the edges of 'pristine' graphite. Because of the three-dimensional molecular architectures, the solubility of dendritic macromolecules is profoundly improved compared with that of their linear analogues. As a result, the resultant macromolecular wedge grafted graphite disperses well in common solvents. On the basis of results from wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), HPEK is selectively grafted at the edges of graphite. For the efficient delamination of graphite into graphene and graphene-like platelets, the dendritic macromolecules with numerous polar periphery groups not only acts as macromolecular wedges but provides chemical affinity to solvents.close7

    Idiopathic erythrocytosis in a patient on chronic hemodialysis

    AbstractA 78-year-old man on hemodialysis presented to our hospital with erythrocytosis. He had started hemodialysis 4 years previously, with a hemoglobin level of 9.8g/dL, and was administered erythropoiesis stimulating agents and ferrous sulfate. Two years previously, his hemoglobin level increased to 14.5g/dL and the treatment for anemia was discontinued. He continued hemodialysis thrice weekly; however, the hemoglobin level had increased to 17.0g/dL at the time of presenting to our hospital. His serum erythropoietin level was 31.4mIU/mL (range, 3.7ā€“31.5mIU/mL), carboxyhemoglobin level was 0.6% (range, 0ā€“1.5%), and oxygen saturation in ambient air was 95.4%. The JAK2 V617F mutation was not observed and other bone marrow abnormalities were not identified. The patient was diagnosed with bladder cancer and a transurethral resection was performed. Eight months after the treatment of bladder cancer, his hemoglobin level was 15.1g/dL, and he was diagnosed with idiopathic erythrocytosis

    Acute pancreatitis associated with pegylated interferon-alpha-2a therapy in chronic hepatitis C

    Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major cause of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Combination therapy of pegylated interferon-alpha (PEG-IFN-Ī±) and ribavirin (RBV) is a current standard treatment for chronic HCV infection in Korea, which has considerable adverse effects. Acute pancreatitis is a rare complication of PEG-IFN-Ī± administration. We report a case of a 62-year-old female who experienced acute pancreatitis after 4 weeks of PEG-IFN-Ī±-2a and RBV combination therapy for chronic HCV infection. The main cause of the acute pancreatitis in this case was probably PEG-IFN-Ī± rather than RBV for several reasons. A few cases have been reported in which acute pancreatitis occurred during treatment with PEG-IFN-Ī±-2b. This is the first report of acute pancreatitis associated with PEG-IFN-Ī±-2a in Korea
