Dietary Intake and Serum Levels of Iron in Relation to Oxidative Stress in Breast Cancer Patients
Iron may induce oxidative stress via production of reactive oxygen species, facilitating mammary carcinogenesis. This study investigated the role of iron in relation to oxidative stress as a potential risk factor in the development of breast cancer (BC). BC patients (n = 121) and healthy age-matched controls (n = 149) were entered into the study. Iron and antioxidant vitamins intakes were estimated using a quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Thirty one subjects from each group provided blood samples for measurement of serum iron, plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) and ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP). Total and non-heme iron intake of BC patients were lower than those of the controls. However, the serum iron level was significantly higher in BC patients. Plasma MDA levels were also significantly higher in BC patients whereas no significant difference in FRAP values were observed between the two groups. Log-transformed serum iron concentration showed no significant correlation with MDA or FRAP. These results suggest that serum iron overload may be a breast cancer risk factor possibly due to increased oxidative stress
Ovarian Hyper-Response to Administration of an GnRH-Agonist Without Gonadotropins
Several case reports have indicated that a small subgroup of patients may develop ovarian hyperstimulation following the administration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRHa) without gonadotropins. However, since only few such cases have been published, it is unclear what course to follow in subsequent cycles after ovarian hyperstimulation in the first cycle using only GnRHa. A 33-yr-old woman was referred to in vitro fertilization for oocyte donation. A depot preparation (3.75 mg) of tryptorelin without gonadotropins induced ovarian multifollicular enlargement with high estradiol level, and was followed by human chorionic gonadotropin administration and oocyte retrieval. In a subsequent cycle of the same patient, a low dose of tryptorelin (0.05 mg) did not induce ovarian hyperstimulation, and resulted in clinical pregnancy. This report shows potential management of ovarian hyperstimulation following the administration of GnRHa without gonadotropins
The effecet of UNCL inactivation on the expression of mechanical stress related genes in cultured human PDL fibroblasts
A mutation of UNCL, an inner nuclear membrane RNAbinding
protein, has been found to eliminate mechanotransduction
in Drosophila. UNCL is expressed in human
periodontal tissue including in periodontal ligament (PDL)
fibroblasts. However, it is unclear how a mechanical
stimulus is translated into cellular responses in PDL
fibroblasts. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect
of UNCl on mechanical stress related genes in PDL
fibroblasts in response to mechanical stress. The mRNA of
TGF-β, COX-2, and MMP-2 was up-regulated after UNCL
inactivation in PDL fibroblasts under the compression
force. Under the tensile force, inactivation of UNCL
decreased the expression of Biglycan, RANKL, MMP-2,
and TIMP-2 mRNAs while it increased the expression of
TIMP-1. p38-MAPK was expressed in PDL fibroblasts
under compression forces whereas phospho-ERK1/2, p65-
NFkB, and c-fos were expressed under tension forces. The
expression and phosphorylation of the mechanical stress
related genes, kinases, and transcription factors were
changed according to the types of stress. Furthermore, most
of them were regulated by the inactivation of UNCL. This
suggests that UNCL is involved in the regulation of
mechanical stress related genes through the signaling
pathway in PDL fibroblasts
Nutritional and antioxidant status by skin types among female adults
This study was performed to analyze the relationship among sebum · hydration content of the skin and nutritional intake, serum antioxidant minerals and antioxidant enzymes, and lipid peroxide concentration in 50 female subjects in their 20s. The skin type was divided into Dry Skin, Mixed Skin, and Oily Skin, and the dry skin group was 14%, the mixed skin group was 56%, and the oily skin group was 30% of all subjects. The average age of the subjects was 20.54 ± 1.43 years and BMI was 20.66. The average sebum content in each group was in the order of T-zone>forehead>chin>cheek. In case of the T-zone, a significant difference between the dry skin group and the oily skin group was observed, suggesting that the area is most sensitive to sebum content by skin type. Significant differences were not observed in energy and nutrient intakes by skin type. Serum concentrations of antioxidant minerals such as copper, manganese, zinc and selenium were not significantly different among the groups, but the dry skin group tended to be higher than the oily skin group. Serum catalase was significantly higher in the oily skin group (P < 0.05), and MDA was significantly higher in the mixed skin group (P < 0.05). The hydration of the cheek and serum zinc showed a negative correlation, and the sebum content of the cheek and GPx showed a significant negative correlation. The hydration of the forehead and serum copper showed a significant negative correlation, and the hydration of the forehead and GPx showed a significant positive correlation. The hydration of the chin and serum SOD showed a significant positive correlation. With these results, it is considered that the basic condition of nutritional status can affect the skin health
The effects of ambient He pressure on the oxygen density of Er-doped SiO x thin films grown by laser ablation of a Si:Er 2 O 3 target
Abstract Er-doped SiO x thin films were fabricated by laser ablation of a Si:Er 2 O 3 target in He atmosphere. We have measured the photoluminescence (PL) at 1.54 mm for the films grown at different He pressures and found that the oxygen density of the grown film that strongly influences the PL intensity is highly correlated with the ambient He pressure. This manifests that oxygen density of the film can be controlled in an inert atmosphere to maximize PL intensity when we adopt pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique to deposit Er-doped SiO x thin films. Also, we have examined the temperature dependence of PL and observed that the thermal quenching is greatly reduced for the PLD-grown films.
Primary Malignant Teratoma with a Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor Component in Thyroid Gland : A Case Report
Teratomas comprise the most common extragonadal germ cell tumors in childhood. Most teratomas involving the thyroid are benign and occur in children. However, the adult cases reported are mostly malignant and commonly arise in the thyroid. We report a case of a 31-yr-old female with a huge neck mass. Pathologic examination revealed it to be malignant teratoma composed of primitive neuroepithelial tissue with primitive neural tubes and loose myxoid to fibrous immature mesenchymal stroma. The patient underwent extensive evaluation of the thyroid gland with computed tomography (CT) scan and positron emission tomography (PET) scan, which revealed no evidence of metastatic disease. She underwent total thyroidectomy with bilateral modified radical neck dissection, intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy. At 22-months of follow-up, the patient has remained euthyroid and showed no evidence of recurrence. This is the first case, to our knowledge, of malignant thyroid teratoma with a exuberant primitive neuroectodermal tumor component in Korea
