The Optimal Single Copy Measurement for the Hidden Subgroup Problem
The optimization of measurements for the state distinction problem has
recently been applied to the theory of quantum algorithms with considerable
successes, including efficient new quantum algorithms for the non-abelian
hidden subgroup problem. Previous work has identified the optimal single copy
measurement for the hidden subgroup problem over abelian groups as well as for
the non-abelian problem in the setting where the subgroups are restricted to be
all conjugate to each other. Here we describe the optimal single copy
measurement for the hidden subgroup problem when all of the subgroups of the
group are given with equal a priori probability. The optimal measurement is
seen to be a hybrid of the two previously discovered single copy optimal
measurements for the hidden subgroup problem.Comment: 8 pages. Error in main proof fixe
The retroflection of part of the East Greenland Current at Cape Farewell
The East Greenland Current (EGC) and the smaller East Greenland Coastal Current (EGCC) provide the major conduit for cold fresh polar water to enter the lower latitudes of the North Atlantic. They flow equatorward through the western Irminger Basin and around Cape Farewell into the Labrador Sea. The surface circulation and transport of the Cape Farewell boundary current region in summer 2005 is described. The EGCC merges with Arctic waters of the EGC to the south of Cape Farewell, forming the West Greenland Current. The EGC transport decreases from 15.5 Sv south of Cape Farewell to 11.7 Sv in the eastern Labrador Sea (where the water becomes known as Irminger Sea Water). The decrease in EGC transport is balanced by the retroflection of a substantial proportion of the boundary current (5.1 Sv) into the central Irminger Basin; a new pathway for fresh water into the interior of the subpolar gyre
Becoming the Preservation Executive Director: A Journey Through the Educational and Professional Development of Preservation Nonprofit Leaders
Historic preservation executive directors are tasked with using their preservation skills and knowledge to preserve and protect the built environment. However, they are also responsible for running a business, in the form of nonprofit organization, where they manage people, projects and budgets to keep the organization functioning. This thesis explores the necessary knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (KSAOCs) required of historic preservation executive directors to lead preservation nonprofits using the method of job analysis. Preservation graduate programs and educational standards are analyzed to demonstrate the gap in preservation academic programs to prepare professionals to lead nonprofit organizations. Recommendations are made to improve preservation education opportunities for preservation students and professionals

Renormalization of Molecular Electronic Levels at Metal-Molecule Interfaces
The electronic structure of benzene on graphite (0001) is computed using the
GW approximation for the electron self-energy. The benzene quasiparticle energy
gap is predicted to be 7.2 eV on graphite, substantially reduced from its
calculated gas-phase value of 10.5 eV. This decrease is caused by a change in
electronic correlation energy, an effect completely absent from the
corresponding Kohn-Sham gap. For weakly-coupled molecules, this correlation
energy change is seen to be well described by a surface polarization effect. A
classical image potential model illustrates trends for other conjugated

Coherence-Preserving Quantum Bits
Real quantum systems couple to their environment and lose their intrinsic
quantum nature through the process known as decoherence. Here we present a
method for minimizing decoherence by making it energetically unfavorable. We
present a Hamiltonian made up solely of two-body interactions between four
two-level systems (qubits) which has a two-fold degenerate ground state. This
degenerate ground state has the property that any decoherence process acting on
an individual physical qubit must supply energy from the bath to the system.
Quantum information can be encoded into the degeneracy of the ground state and
such coherence-preserving qubits will then be robust to local decoherence at
low bath temperatures. We show how this quantum information can be universally
manipulated and indicate how this approach may be applied to a quantum dot

An exploration of the experience of codependency through interpretative phenomenological analysis
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University LondonCodependency is a highly contested construct featuring in the popular, clinical and research literature. Within the academic literature, the voices and lived experience of individuals who consider themselves codependents are mostly unavailable. This Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) study explored the lived experiences of 8 individuals self-identified as codependents, who chose 12-Step recovery groups to frame their recovery process. This research addressed the following research question: What is the lived experience of codependency among people who have sought support from a 12-step recovery group for codependents?
The idiographic, phenomenological and hermeneutic aspects of the study captured how participants made sense of their experiences of codependency and the meanings of the support group. The information was collected over 3-6 months by means of three in-depth semi-structured interviews and a visual method in which participants selected and analysed objects or photographs which, for them, expressed the meaning of codependency. Four main themes emerged from the analysis of the interviews: (1) Codependency experienced as real and tangible: ‘Codependency explains everything’. (2) Experiencing an undefined sense of self: ‘Codependency helps me to discover my sense of self.’ (3) Seesawing through extremes in life: ‘Like a seesaw, I feel out of control’. (4) Finding meaning in codependency through exploring family experiences: ‘Down to childhood’. The findings revealed that the experience of codependency frames these individuals’ sense of identity, their lifeworlds and the way they view and experience life difficulties. It also provided a highly nuanced and fine-grained analysis of the lived experience of codependency. The study brings a new perspective on the lived experiences of this client group. Although the findings are not straightforwardly generalizable, they may inform clinical practice. It is hoped that this study will raise awareness about this controversial topic, bring a better understanding of codependency and inspire further research
