An Experimental Investigation of Fluid Flow and Heating in Various Resonance Tube Modes
Experiments have been performed to study resonance phenomena in tubes excited by underexpanded jet flows. This investigation comprised the following: Study of the various resonance tube modes under a wide range of nozzle pressure, spacing between nozzle and tube mouth, and different tube length; the effects of these modes on the endwall pressure and gas temperature; flow visualization of both jet and tube flows by spark shadowgraph technique; and measurement of wave speed inside the tube by the laser-schlieren techniques. An extensive study of the free-jet flow was undertaken to explain important aspects of various modes of operation of resonance tube flows
Looking and Thinking: How individuals with Williams syndrome make judgements about mental states
Individuals with the neuro-developmental disorder Williams syndrome (WS) are characterised by a combination of features which makes this group vulnerable socially, including mild-moderate cognitive difficulties, pro-social drive, and indiscriminate trust. The purpose of this study was to explore a key socio-communicative skill in individuals with WS, namely, mental state recognition abilities. We explored this skill in a detailed way by looking at how well individuals with WS recognise complex everyday mental states, and how they allocate their attention while making these judgements. Participants with WS were matched to two typically developing groups for comparison purposes, a verbal ability matched group and a chronological age matched group. While eye movements were recorded, participants were shown displays of eight different mental states in static and dynamic form, and they performed a forced-choice judgement on the mental state. Mental states were easier to recognise in dynamic form rather than static form. Mental state recognition ability for individuals with WS was poorer than expected by their chronological age, and at the level expected by their verbal ability. However, the pattern of mental state recognition for participants with WS varied according to mental state, and we found some interesting links between ease/difficulty recognising some mental states (worried/do not trust) and the classic behavioural profile associated with WS (high anxiety/indiscriminate trust). Furthermore, eye tracking data revealed that participants with WS allocated their attention atypically, with less time spent attending the information from the face regions. This challenges the widely held understanding of WS being associated with prolonged face and eye gaze, and indicates that there is more heterogeneity within this disorder in terms of socio-perception than previous reports would suggest
Structural and magnetic dynamics of a laser induced phase transition in FeRh
We use time-resolved x-ray diffraction and magnetic optical Kerr effect to
study the laser induced antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition in
FeRh. The structural response is given by the nucleation of independent
ferromagnetic domains (\tau_1 ~ 30ps). This is significantly faster than the
magnetic response (\tau_2 ~ 60ps) given by the subsequent domain realignment.
X-ray diffraction shows that the two phases co-exist on short time-scales and
that the phase transition is limited by the speed of sound. A nucleation model

Fast-Neutron Activation of Long-Lived Isotopes in Enriched Ge
We measured the production of \nuc{57}{Co}, \nuc{54}{Mn}, \nuc{68}{Ge},
\nuc{65}{Zn}, and \nuc{60}{Co} in a sample of Ge enriched in isotope 76 due to
high-energy neutron interactions. These isotopes, especially \nuc{68}{Ge}, are
critical in understanding background in Ge detectors used for double-beta decay
experiments. They are produced by cosmogenic-neutron interactions in the
detectors while they reside on the Earth's surface. These production rates were
measured at neutron energies of a few hundred MeV. We compared the measured
production to that predicted by cross-section calculations based on CEM03.02.
The cross section calculations over-predict our measurements by approximately a
factor of three depending on isotope. We then use the measured cosmic-ray
neutron flux, our measurements, and the CEM03.02 cross sections to predict the
cosmogenic production rate of these isotopes. The uncertainty in extrapolating
the cross section model to higher energies dominates the total uncertainty in
the cosmogenic production rate.Comment: Revised after feedback and further work on extrapolating cross
sections to higher energies in order to estimate cosmic production rates.
Also a numerical error was found and fixed in the estimate of the Co-57
production rat
High p_T Triggered Delta-eta,Delta-phi Correlations over a Broad Range in Delta-eta
The first measurement of pseudorapidity (Delta-eta) and azimuthal angle
(Delta-phi) correlations between high transverse momentum charged hadrons (p_T
> 2.5 GeV/c) and all associated particles is presented at both short- (small
Delta-eta) and long-range (large Delta-eta) over a continuous pseudorapidity
acceptance (-4<Delta-eta<2). In these proceedings, the various near- and
away-side features of the correlation structure are discussed as a function of
centrality in Au+Au collisions measured by PHOBOS at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. In
particular, this measurement allows a much more complete determination of the
longitudinal extent of the ridge structure, first observed by the STAR
collaboration over a limited eta range. In central collisions the ridge
persists to at least Delta-eta=4, diminishing in magnitude as collisions become
more peripheral until it disappears around Npart=80.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, presented at the 20th International Conference on
