Efficient Equilibria in Polymatrix Coordination Games
We consider polymatrix coordination games with individual preferences where
every player corresponds to a node in a graph who plays with each neighbor a
separate bimatrix game with non-negative symmetric payoffs. In this paper, we
study -approximate -equilibria of these games, i.e., outcomes where
no group of at most players can deviate such that each member increases his
payoff by at least a factor . We prove that for these
games have the finite coalitional improvement property (and thus
-approximate -equilibria exist), while for this
property does not hold. Further, we derive an almost tight bound of
on the price of anarchy, where is the number of
players; in particular, it scales from unbounded for pure Nash equilibria ( to for strong equilibria (). We also settle the complexity
of several problems related to the verification and existence of these
equilibria. Finally, we investigate natural means to reduce the inefficiency of
Nash equilibria. Most promisingly, we show that by fixing the strategies of
players the price of anarchy can be reduced to (and this bound is tight)
Impact of gameplay vs. reading on mental models of social-ecological systems: a fuzzy cognitive mapping approach
Climate change is a highly complex social-ecological problem characterized by system-type dynamics that are important to communicate in a variety of settings, ranging from formal education to decision makers to informal education of the general public. Educational games are one approach that may enhance systems thinking skills. This study used a randomized controlled experiment to compare the impact on the mental models of participants of an educational card game vs. an illustrated article about the Arctic social-ecological system. A total of 41 participants (game: n = 20; reading: n = 21) created pre- and post-intervention mental models of the system, based on a "fuzzy cognitive mapping" approach. Maps were analyzed using network statistics. Both reading the article and playing the game resulted in measurable increases in systems understanding. The group reading the article perceived a more complex system after the intervention, with overall learning gains approximately twice those of the game players. However, game players demonstrated similar learning gains as article readers regarding the climate system, actions both causing environmental problems and protecting the Arctic, as well as the importance of the base- and mid-levels of the food chain. These findings contribute to the growing evidence showing that games are important resources to include as strategies for building capacity to understand and steward sustainable social-ecological systems, in both formal and informal education
The Least-core and Nucleolus of Path Cooperative Games
Cooperative games provide an appropriate framework for fair and stable profit
distribution in multiagent systems. In this paper, we study the algorithmic
issues on path cooperative games that arise from the situations where some
commodity flows through a network. In these games, a coalition of edges or
vertices is successful if it enables a path from the source to the sink in the
network, and lose otherwise. Based on dual theory of linear programming and the
relationship with flow games, we provide the characterizations on the CS-core,
least-core and nucleolus of path cooperative games. Furthermore, we show that
the least-core and nucleolus are polynomially solvable for path cooperative
games defined on both directed and undirected network
Understanding pregnancy planning in a low-income country setting: validation of the London measure of unplanned pregnancy in Malawi
This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0), which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.Background: The London Measure of Unplanned Pregnancy (LMUP) is a new and psychometrically valid measure of pregnancy intention that was developed in the United Kingdom. An improved understanding of pregnancy intention in low-income countries, where unintended pregnancies are common and maternal and neonatal deaths are high, is necessary to inform policies to address the unmet need for family planning. To this end this research aimed to validate the LMUP for use in the Chichewa language in Malawi.Methods: Three Chichewa speakers translated the LMUP and one translation was agreed which was back-translated and pre-tested on five pregnant women using cognitive interviews. The measure was field tested with pregnant women who were recruited at antenatal clinics and data were analysed using classical test theory and hypothesis testing.Results: 125 women aged 15-43 (median 23), with parities of 1-8 (median 2) completed the Chichewa LMUP. There were no missing data. The full range of LMUP scores was captured. In terms of reliability, the scale was internally consistent (Cronbach's alpha = 0.78) and test-retest data from 70 women showed good stability (weighted Kappa 0.80). In terms of validity, hypothesis testing confirmed that unmarried women (p = 0.003), women who had four or more children alive (p = 0.0051) and women who were below 20 or over 29 (p = 0.0115) were all more likely to have unintended pregnancies. Principal component analysis showed that five of the six items loaded onto one factor, with a further item borderline. A sensitivity analysis to assess the effect of the removal of the weakest item of the scale showed slightly improved performance but as the LMUP was not significantly adversely affected by its inclusion we recommend retaining the six-item score.Conclusion: The Chichewa LMUP is a valid and reliable measure of pregnancy intention in Malawi and can now be used in research and/or surveillance. This is the first validation of this tool in a low-income country, helping to demonstrate that the concept of pregnancy planning is applicable in such a setting. Novel diffusion mechanism on the GaAs(001) surface: the role of adatom-dimer interaction
Employing first principles total energy calculations we have studied the
behavior of Ga and Al adatoms on the GaAs(001)-beta2 surface. The adsorption
site and two relevant diffusion channels are identified. The channels are
characterized by different adatom-surface dimer interaction. Both affect in a
novel way the adatom migration: in one channel the diffusing adatom jumps
across the surface dimers and leaves the dimer bonds intact, in the other one
the surface dimer bonds are broken. The two channels are taken into account to
derive effective adatom diffusion barriers. From the diffusion barriers we
conclude a strong diffusion anisotropy for both Al and Ga adatoms with the
direction of fastest diffusion parallel to the surface dimers. In agreement
with experimental observations we find higher diffusion barriers for Al than

Superconductivity in Cu_xTiSe_2
Charge density waves (CDWs) are periodic modulations of the conduction
electron density in solids. They are collective states that arise from
intrinsic instabilities often present in low dimensional electronic systems.
The layered dichalcogenides are the most well-studied examples, with TiSe_2 one
of the first CDW-bearing materials known. The competition between CDW and
superconducting collective electronic states at low temperatures has long been
held and explored, and yet no chemical system has been previously reported
where finely controlled chemical tuning allows this competition to be studied
in detail. Here we report how, upon controlled intercalation of TiSe_2 with Cu
to yield Cu_xTiSe_2, the CDW transition is continuously suppressed, and a new
superconducting state emerges near x = 0.04, with a maximum T_c of 4.15 K found
at x = 0.08. Cu_xTiSe_2 thus provides the first opportunity to study the CDW to
Superconductivity transition in detail through an easily-controllable chemical
parameter, and will provide new insights into the behavior of correlated

Influences of organizational investments in social capital on service employee commitment and performance
a b s t r a c t a r t i c l e i n f o Improving customers' service experiences by identifying ways to develop organizational cultures that better motivate and engage service employees is an important issue for service organizations and a top priority in services research. However, extant services research focuses far more on managing customer relationships than on the dynamics of effectively supporting and developing the service personnel who interact with customers. This study assesses the influence of an organizational human resource developmental initiative on service employees. The authors utilize social capital theory and the theory of reasoned action to propose and test a model that examines relationships between organizational investments in social capital and service employees' work-related attitudes, norms, and behaviors. Results from a field study of 407 customerfacing employees from multiple service organizations suggest that making organizational investments in social capital favorably influences service employees' commitment, job performance, and organizational citizenship behavior
