The role of liquid based cytology (ThinPrep) in the investigation of patients with malignant common epithelial tumors of the ovary

The aim of our study was to evaluate the accuracy of ThinPrep cytology of effusions from patients with common malignant - epithelial tumors of the ovary. Our study was carried out on ascitic fluids, free peritoneal fluids and peritoneal washings from 105 patients. In the Cytological Laboratory we examined cytological smears with conventional cytology and ThinPrep cytology. Also, in the Feulgen stained smears DNA ploidy measurements were performed using the SAMBA 2004 image analyzer. In summary, the ThinPrep method showed a good correlation with the final diagnosis and a letter accuracy than the conventional cytology, with an important decrease of the screening time. Moreover the ThinPrep method offers the possibility to ally automated cytology techniques to smears of the same cellularity with those used for diagnostic purpose. We believe that our study contributes substantially in the enrichment of the literature in this field.Σκοπός της μελέτης μας είναι ο έλεγχος της αξιοπιστίας της κυτταρολογίας υγρής φάσης στην διερεύνηση ασθενών με κακοήθειας κοινούς επιθηλιακούς όγκους των ωοθηκών και την διαγνωστική αξία της πλοειδίας του DNA. Μελετήθηκαν κυτταρολογικά επιχρίσματα από 105 γυναίκες. Το υλικό εξετάσθηκε με τεχνικές συμβατικής κυτταρολογίας και της κυτταρολογίας υγρής φάσης και ταυτόχρονα μετρήθηκε η πλοειδία του DNA με την βοήθεια ενός συστήματος ανάλυσης εικόνας. Συγκριτικά η κυτταρολογία υγρής φάσης πλεονεκτεί της συμβατικής όσον αφορά την διαγνωστική ακρίβεια, την μείωση του αριθμού των επιχρισμάτων, την βελτίωση της ποιότητας τους, την δυνατότητα αξιόπιστης εφαρμογής συγχρόνων τεχνικών της στατικής κυτταρομετρίας που σε συνδυασμό με την μορφολογική εξέταση βελτιώνει ουσιαστικά την διαγνωστική ακρίβεια σε επίπεδο ασθενούς και επιτρέπει ακριβέστερο καθορισμό της πρόγνωσης
