    The media constantly reminds us that we are in the "selfie" generation and should capitalize on it. This is an exploratory study which was conducted to determine the impact of social networking on the academic performance of first-year students. The respondents were chosen at random using Slovin's formula (301 out of 1,223 freshmen). The results were obtained using the t-test for independent samples. This survey concluded that everyone uses portable devices and smart phones to access the internet. Pearson's Coefficient of Correlation demonstrates the association between SNS visits and academic performance of students in a particular year. The significant majority of respondents used Facebook and YouTube at least twice a week and are also significant factor in students’ scholastic performance.     VennDiagramWeb: a web application for the generation of highly customizable Venn and Euler diagrams.

    BackgroundVisualization of data generated by high-throughput, high-dimensionality experiments is rapidly becoming a rate-limiting step in computational biology. There is an ongoing need to quickly develop high-quality visualizations that can be easily customized or incorporated into automated pipelines. This often requires an interface for manual plot modification, rapid cycles of tweaking visualization parameters, and the generation of graphics code. To facilitate this process for the generation of highly-customizable, high-resolution Venn and Euler diagrams, we introduce VennDiagramWeb: a web application for the widely used VennDiagram R package. VennDiagramWeb is hosted at http://venndiagram.res.oicr.on.ca/ .ResultsVennDiagramWeb allows real-time modification of Venn and Euler diagrams, with parameter setting through a web interface and immediate visualization of results. It allows customization of essentially all aspects of figures, but also supports integration into computational pipelines via download of R code. Users can upload data and download figures in a range of formats, and there is exhaustive support documentation.ConclusionsVennDiagramWeb allows the easy creation of Venn and Euler diagrams for computational biologists, and indeed many other fields. Its ability to support real-time graphics changes that are linked to downloadable code that can be integrated into automated pipelines will greatly facilitate the improved visualization of complex datasets.     Autonomous Fruit Harvester with Machine Vision

    This study presents an autonomous fruit harvester with a machine vision capable of detecting and picking or cutting an orange fruit from a tree. The system of is composed of a six-degrees of freedom (6-DOF) robotic arm mounted on a four-wheeled electric kart. The kart uses ZED stereo camera for depth estimation of a target. It can also be used to detect trees using the green detection algorithm. Image processing is done using Microsoft Visual Studio and OpenCV library. The x & y coordinates and distance of the tree are passed on to Arduino microcontroller as inputs to motor control of the wheels. When the kart is less than 65cm to the tree, the kart stops and the robotic arm system takes over to search and harvest orange fruits. The robotic arm has a webcam and ultrasonic sensor attached at its end-effector. The webcam is used for orange fruit detection while ultrasonic sensor is used to provide feedback on the distance of the orange fruit to end-effector. Multiple fruit harvesting is successfully done. The success rate of harvesting and putting fruit into the basket is 80% and 85% for the gripper end-effector and cutter end-effector respectively

    Toxicity and Cosmesis Outcomes for Single Fraction Intra-Operative Electron Radiotherapy (IOERT) for Breast Cancer

    Background: Adjuvant radiation therapy is proven to reduce local recurrence in patients with early stage breast cancer. To reduce toxicity, improve geographic accuracy, and reduce treatment time, IOERT can be utilized as an alternative to external beam radiation therapy. The study’s objective was to determine the short term toxicity and cosmesis profile of single fraction IOERT given as definitive treatment in a community setting. Materials and Methods: From Mar 2012 to Jul 2014, 84 patients (3 bilateral), ages 45-91 y.o. with stage 0-II were treated with IOERT (Mobetron, IntraOp Medical, Sunnyvale, CA). A single 21 Gy fraction was administered to the tumor bed after resection. IOERT was delivered using 4.5 – 6 cm applicators with electron energies from 6-12 MeV. At 2w, 6mo and 12mo, toxicity was assessed according to CTCAE Version 4.0 (range 0-4) and cosmesis based on a scale derived for national trials. Results: The median pathologic tumor size was 13 mm (4 tumors \u3e 25mm) with 34 tumors being IDC, 4 ILC, 20 DCIS, and 29 mixed histologies. After the initial resection with IOERT, 85 breasts had a negative margin. Two required re-excision due to positive margins. 65 SLN biopsies were completed, 61 were negative, 4 positive (1 completion ALND). Median follow up was 57.1 weeks. Toxicity (Grade at 2 weeks, 6 months, and 12 months in %): 0: 49, 69, 62 1: 44, 29, 35 2: 7, 2, 3 Cosmesis(Appearance at 2 weeks, 6 months, 12 months in %): Excellent: 71, 86, 79 Good: 28, 14, 21 Fair: 1, 0, 0 *No patients had a toxicity of 3 or 4; or a cosmesis of poor. Conclusion: Single fraction IOERT was well tolerated by all patients with no grade 3+ toxicity up to 12 months. At one year, 97% of patients had 0-1 grade toxicity and 100% of patients had excellent or good cosmesis. This treatment, consistent with current reports, meets critical criteria for incorporation into practice and reduces treatment by 3-6 weeks

    Discrimination of Juvenile Yellowfin (Thunnus albacares) and Bigeye (T. obesus) Tunas using Mitochondrial DNA Control Region and Liver Morphology

    Yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares (Bonnaterre, 1788) and bigeye tuna, Thunnus obesus (Lowe, 1839) are two of the most economically important tuna species in the world. However, identification of their juveniles, especially at sizes less than 40 cm, is very difficult, often leading to misidentification and miscalculation of their catch estimates. Here, we applied the mitochondrial DNA control region D-loop, a recently validated genetic marker used for identifying tuna species (Genus Thunnus), to discriminate juvenile tunas caught by purse seine and ringnet sets around fish aggregating devices (FADs) off the Southern Iloilo Peninsula in Central Philippines. We checked individual identifications using the Neighbor-Joining Method and compared results with morphometric analyses and the liver phenotype. We tested 48 specimens ranging from 13 to 31 cm fork length. Morpho-meristic analyses suggested that 12 specimens (25%) were bigeye tuna and 36 specimens (75%) were yellowfin tuna. In contrast, the genetic and liver analyses both showed that 5 specimens (10%) were bigeye tuna and 43 (90%) yellowfin tuna. This suggests that misidentification can occur even with highly stringent morpho-meristic characters and that the mtDNA control region and liver phenotype are excellent markers to discriminate juveniles of yellowfin and bigeye tunas

    Identification of pen shells (Bivalvia: Ostreida: Pinnidae) collected off northern Iloilo, Philippines using their morphological characters

    This study describes morphological characteristics of pen shells collected along the coast of northern Iloilo, Philippines. A total of 380 pen shell individuals with intact shells and their adductor muscles were carefully examined and measured. Eleven species were studied, namely: Atrina pectinata (Linnaeus, 1767), Atrina inflata (Dillwyn, 1817), Atrina vexillum (Born, 1778), Atrina seminuda (Lamarck, 1819), Atrina rigida ([Lightfoot], 1786), Pinna bicolor Gmelin, 1791, Pinna atropurpurea Sowerby, 1825, Pinna deltodes Menke, 1843, Pinna muricata Linnaeus, 1758, Pinna incurva Gmelin, 1791, and Pinna nobilis Linnaeus, 1758. The species were identified based on the nine characteristics of the valve for the genus Pinna and eight for the genus Atrina. These characteristics were then correlated with their adductor muscles’ morphology. Analysis of variance revealed that the three most dominant species investigated under genus Atrina, namely Atrina pectinata, Atrina inflata, and Atrina vexillum, were found to be significantly different in the eight characters of the valve (P < 0.05). Moreover, three representative Pinna species, Pinna bicolor, Pinna atropurpurea, and Pinna deltodes, were significantly (P < 0.05) different based on shell width, dorsal posterior shell margin, sulcus width, and dorsal posterior margin to dorsal nacreous margin. The observed high correlation (P < 0.05) between adductor muscle properties and different shell length characteristics for five dominant species can be used as a predictor of growth and suggests that the increase in the size of adductor muscle correlates to the increase in the size of the mentioned shell characteristics. No previous study of this kind was conducted in the Philippines. This work provides relevant information for related biological research on other pen shell species and for the management of pen shell resources in northern Iloilo and, possibly, other regions in the world

    Risk of adverse outcomes among infants of immigrant women according to birth-weight curves tailored to maternal world region of origin

    Background: Infants of immigrant women in Western nations generally have lower birth weights than infants of native-born women. Whether this difference is physiologic or pathological is unclear. We determined whether the use of birth-weight curves tailored to maternal world region of origin would discriminate adverse neonatal and obstetric outcomes more accurately than a single birth-weight curve based on infants of Canadian-born women. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of in-hospital singleton live births (328 387 to immigrant women, 761 260 to nonimmigrant women) in Ontario between 2002 and 2012 using population health services data linked to the national immigration database. We classified infants as small for gestational age (\u3c 10th percentile) or large for gestational age (≥ 90th percentile) using both Canadian and world region-specific birthweight curves and compared associations with adverse neonatal and obstetric outcomes. Results: Compared with world region-specific birth-weight curves, the Canadian curve classified 20 431 (6.2%) additional newborns of immigrant women as small for gestational age, of whom 15 467 (75.7%) were of East or South Asian descent. The odds of neonatal death were lower among small-for-gestational-age infants of immigrant women than among those of nonimmigrant women based on the Canadian birth-weight curve (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 0.83, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.72-0.95), but higher when small for gestational age was defined by the world region- specific curves (adjusted OR 1.24, 95% CI 1.08- 1.42). Conversely, the odds of some adverse outcomes were lower among large-forgestational- age infants of immigrant women than among those of nonimmigrant women based on world region-specific birth-weight curves, but were similar based on the Canadian curve. Interpretation: World region-specific birthweight curves seemed to be more appropriate than a single Canadian population-based curve for assessing the risk of adverse neonatal and obstetric outcomes among small- and large-for-gestational-age infants born to immigrant women, especially those from the East and South Asian regions
