    Motivational Social Visualizations for Personalized E-Learning

    A large number of educational resources is now available on the Web to support both regular classroom learning and online learning. However, the abundance of available content produces at least two problems: how to help students find the most appropriate resources, and how to engage them into using these resources and benefiting from them. Personalized and social learning have been suggested as potential methods for addressing these problems. Our work presented in this paper attempts to combine the ideas of personalized and social learning. We introduce Progressor + , an innovative Web-based interface that helps students find the most relevant resources in a large collection of self-assessment questions and programming examples. We also present the results of a classroom study of the Progressor +  in an undergraduate class. The data revealed the motivational impact of the personalized social guidance provided by the system in the target context. The interface encouraged students to explore more educational resources and motivated them to do some work ahead of the course schedule. The increase in diversity of explored content resulted in improving students’ problem solving success. A deeper analysis of the social guidance mechanism revealed that it is based on the leading behavior of the strong students, who discovered the most relevant resources and created trails for weaker students to follow. The study results also demonstrate that students were more engaged with the system: they spent more time in working with self-assessment questions and annotated examples, attempted more questions, and achieved higher success rates in answering them

    Phylogeny of snakes (Serpentes): combining morphological and molecular data in likelihood Bayesian and parsimony analyses

    Copyright © 2007 The Natural history MuseumThe phylogeny of living and fossil snakes is assessed using likelihood and parsimony approaches and a dataset combining 263 morphological characters with mitochondrial (2693 bp) and nuclear (1092 bp) gene sequences. The ‘no common mechanism’ (NCMr) and ‘Markovian’ (Mkv) models were employed for the morphological partition in likelihood analyses; likelihood scores in the NCMr model were more closely correlated with parsimony tree lengths. Both models accorded relatively less weight to the molecular data than did parsimony, with the effect being milder in the NCMr model. Partitioned branch and likelihood support values indicate that the mtDNA and nuclear gene partitions agree more closely with each other than with morphology. Despite differences between data partitions in phylogenetic signal, analytic models, and relative weighting, the parsimony and likelihood analyses all retrieved the following widely accepted groups: scolecophidians, alethinophidians, cylindrophiines, macrostomatans (sensu lato) and caenophidians. Anilius alone emerged as the most basal alethinophidian; the combined analyses resulted in a novel and stable position of uropeltines and cylindrophiines as the second-most basal clade of alethinophidians. The limbed marine pachyophiids, along with Dinilysia and Wonambi, were always basal to all living snakes. Other results stable in all combined analyses include: Xenopeltis and Loxocemus were sister taxa (fide morphology) but clustered with pythonines (fide molecules), and Ungaliophis clustered with a boine-erycine clade (fide molecules). Tropidophis remains enigmatic; it emerges as a basal alethinophidian in the parsimony analyses (fide molecules) but a derived form in the likelihood analyses (fide morphology), largely due to the different relative weighting accorded to data partitions.Michael S.     Surplus nest boxes and the potential for polygyny affect clutch size and offspring sex ratio in house wrens

    Females of many species can gain benefits from being choosy about their mates and even exhibit context-dependent investment in reproduction in response to the quality of their breeding situation. Here, we show that if a male house wren is provided with surplus nest boxes in his territory, his mate lays a larger clutch with a significantly higher proportion of sons. This response to a territory characteristic directly associated with male competitive ability, and ultimately to male reproductive success, suggests that male competition over access to high-quality territories with surplus nest boxes (i.e. those able to support polygyny) may influence female reproductive investment decisions. The results of this study have interesting implications, particularly considering the important role that studies of cavity nesting birds utilizing nest boxes have played in advancing our understanding of behaviour, ecology and evolution

    Thermal oxidation of strained Si/SiGe: impact of surface morphology and effect on MOS devices

    The performance of surface channel MOS devices depends on gate oxide interface quality. Carrier transport is enhanced in strained Si, thus its use for MOSFET channels can increase device performance. Thermal oxidation produces the highest quality SiO2. This paper compares thermal oxidation of strained Si with unstrained Si. Strained Si is achieved by epitaxial growth on relaxed SiGe. The impact of large-scale cross-hatching roughness inherent in relaxed SiGe alloys on strained Si oxidation is investigated. The nanoscale oxide interface roughness and oxidation rate of strained Si are found to correlate with the undulating cross-hatch period, increasing and decreasing, respectively, with the degree of surface vicinality. Further, analysis suggests strained Si oxidation kinetics arise primarily from local variations in the SiGe substrate orientation due to cross-hatching, rather than strain. Devices fabricated on relatively smooth SiGe material exhibit electrical performance enhancements exceeding 75% compared with devices fabricated on material with severe cross-hatching. Likely causes for the dependence of strained Si oxidation kinetics on surface morphology and the impact on MOS devices are discussed. The enhanced performance of strained Si/SiGe MOSFETs over Si control devices with equivalent oxide interface roughness is also presented. Strained Si devices exhibit mobility gains greater than 100% and significant increases in transconductance compared with control devices
