LOTS of LTA applications
Current problems facing the logistical planner in utilizing the new ships of the modern, intermodal sea transportation systems in a logistics-over-the-shore (undeveloped) environment are described. Then the employment of two potential LTA vehicle systems are described and discussed as significant parts of possible solutions to this range of logistical problems. Vulnerability aspects of these LTA vehicles are also briefly addressed because of their possible employment near combat areas
TMS communications hardware. Volume 1: Computer interfaces
A prototpye coaxial cable bus communications system was designed to be used in the Trend Monitoring System (TMS) to connect intelligent graphics terminals (based around a Data General NOVA/3 computer) to a MODCOMP IV host minicomputer. The direct memory access (DMA) interfaces which were utilized for each of these computers are identified. It is shown that for the MODCOMP, an off-the-shell board was suitable, while for the NOVAs, custon interface circuitry was designed and implemented
A New Approach to Black Hole Microstates
If one encodes the gravitational degrees of freedom in an orthonormal frame
field there is a very natural first order action one can write down (which in
four dimensions is known as the Goldberg action). In this essay we will show
that this action contains a boundary action for certain microscopic degrees of
freedom living at the horizon of a black hole, and argue that these degrees of
freedom hold great promise for explaining the microstates responsible for black
hole entropy, in any number of spacetime dimensions. This approach faces many
interesting challenges, both technical and conceptual.Comment: 6 pages, 0 figures, LaTeX; submitted to Mod. Phys. Lett. A.; this

Reservation Wages, Labour Market Participation and Health
The concept of the reservation wage has played an important role in labour market theory; particularly in models of job search, labour supply and labour market participation. Despite this core theoretical role, there is a scarcity of empirical research which explores the setting of reservation wages at the individual level. In this paper, we focus on the determinants of reservation wages, with a particular focus on health, which has attracted very little attention despite its importance from a policy perspective. We use data for males from 14 waves of the British Household Panel Survey and estimate an endogenous switching model which predicts reservation wages for the unemployed and market wages for the employed. We employ methods to deal with the endogeneity of health, measurement errors in our self reported health variable and selection into economic activity. Our results suggest that health is an important determinant of selection, both into economic activity and into employment (versus unemployment) but that, once these participation effects are accounted for, health is not a significant determinant of either the reservation wage or the market wage. This casts doubt on the results of a number of previous studies that have failed to appropriately account for selection in models of male wages. Our results have important policy implications since they suggest that poor health is a major cause of economic inactivity
Workshop in Moodle: a tool for peer critiquing
This paper will begin with a brief discussion of the benefits of peer assessment and peer critiquing. In particular, it will examine how both can be beneficial in
helping to introduce, and reinforce, valuable graduate attributes in students throughout their university careers.
It will then examine the tools available at the University of Glasgow and evaluate them in terms of their strengths and weaknesses. In order to explain this in detail, a real life case study from a third year class in Nursing will be presented. The paper will conclude that, while there are obvious benefits to peer critiquing tools being used with a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), some modifications
are necessary in order to make them more easily usable by staff and students
