Dynamical demixing of a binary mixture under sedimentation

We investigate the sedimentation dynamics of a binary mixture, the species of which differ by their Stokes coefficients but are identical otherwise. We analyze the sedimentation dynamics and the morphology of the final deposits using Brownian dynamics simulations for mixtures with a range of sedimentation velocities of both species. We found a threshold in the sedimentation velocities difference above which the species in the final deposit are segregated. The degree of segregation increases with the difference in the Stokes coefficients or the sedimentation velocities above the threshold. We propose a simple mean-field model that captures the main features of the simulated deposits

Reduction of damage to tropical moist forest through planned harvesting.

The damage occasioned by harvesting in a planned manner is assessed. The main features of the approach to damage reduction were: previous surveying and careful construction of roads and skidding trails, climber cutting and directional felling. Harvested volume was 20m3 ha-1. The number of damaged trees over 10cm diameter was 5.3 pper tree logged and the volume of damage was 0.27m3 per cubic meter extracted. Damage caused to the canopy by road and trail cutting, provision of landings and felling damage amounted to a maximum canopy opening of 15%

LIQUID METAL FLOW CONTROL BY DC ELECTROMAGNETIC PUMPS

    Get PDF
The cooling system of high-density thermal power requires fluids of high thermal conductivity, such as liquid metals. Electromagnetic pumps can be used to liquid metal fluid flow control in cooling circuits. The operation of electromagnetic pumps used to flow control is based on Lorentz force. This force can be achieved by magnetic field and electric current interaction, controlled by external independent power supplies. This work presents the electromagnetic pump operational principles, the IEAv development scheme and the BEMC-1 simulation code. The theoretical results of BEMC-1simulation are compared to electromagnetic pump operation experimental data, validating the BEMC-1 code. This code is used to evaluate the DC electromagnetic pump performance applied to Mercury flow control and others liquid metal such as Sodium, Lead and Bismuth, used in nuclear fast reactors

A PARAMETRIC STUDY AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF DC ELECTROMAGNETIC PUMPS WITH BEMC-1 CODE

Electromagnetic pumps are used to control liquid metal fluid flow in cooling loops. The principle of operation of an electromagnetic pump is based on Lorentz’s force. This is obtained by interaction of the magnetic field and the electrical current, imposed and adjusted by independent external electric power sources. In this work are presented the continuous current electromagnetic pumps, their basic equations and the BEMC-1 code, developed for design and performance evaluation of a DC electromagnetic pump. The main objective of this paper is a parametric study for magnetic induction, static pressure, fluid flow and performance evaluation of the pump. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental data to get adjust factors to be used in the BEMC-1 code. In this way the BEMC-1 code can be validated and used in the evaluations and projects of DC electromagnetic pumps

OH-selected AGB and post-AGB objects I.Infrared and maser properties

Using 766 compact objects from a survey of the galactic Plane in the 1612-MHz OH line, new light is cast on the infrared properties of evolved stars on the TP-AGB and beyond. The usual mid-infrared selection criteria, based on IRAS colours, largely fail to distinguish early post-AGB stages. A two-colour diagram from narrower-band MSX flux densities, with bimodal distributions, provides a better tool to do the latter. Four mutually consistent selection criteria for OH-masing red PPNe are given, as well as two for early post-AGB masers and one for all post--AGB masers, including the earliest ones. All these criteria miss a group of blue, high-outflow post-AGB sources with 60-mum excess; these will be discussed in detail in Paper II. The majority of post-AGB sources show regular double-peaked spectra in the OH 1612-MHz line, with fairly low outflow velocities, although the fractions of single peaks and irregular spectra may vary with age and mass. The OH flux density shows a fairly regular relation with the stellar flux and the envelope optical depth, with the maser efficiency increasing with IRAS colour R21. The OH flux density is linearly correlated with the 60-mum flux density.Comment: 16 pages, LaTex, 22 figures, AJ (accepted
