"Call a Teenager⊠That's What I Do!" - Grandchildren Help Older Adults Use New Technologies: Qualitative Study.
BackgroundAlthough family technical support seems intuitive, there is very little research exploring this topic.ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to conduct a subanalysis of data collected from a large-scale qualitative project regarding older adults' experiences in using health information technology. Specifically, the subanalysis explored older adults' experiences with technology support from family members to inform strategies for promoting older adults' engagement with new health technologies. Although the primary analysis of the original study was theoretically driven, this paper reports results from an inductive, open-coding analysis.MethodsThis is a subanalysis of a major code identified unexpectedly from a qualitative study investigating older adults' use experience of a widespread health technology, the patient portal. A total of 24 older patients (â„65 years) with multiple chronic conditions (Charlson Comorbidity Index >2) participated in focus groups conducted at the patients' primary clinic. While conducting the primary theoretically driven analysis, coders utilized an open-coding approach to ensure important ideas not reflected in the theoretical code book were captured. Open coding resulted in 1 code: family support. This subanalysis further categorized family support by who provided tech support, how tech support was offered, and the opinions of older participants about receiving family tech support.ResultsThe participants were not specifically asked about family support, yet themes around family assistance and encouragement for technology emerged from every focus group. Participants repeatedly mentioned that they called their grandchildren and adult children if they needed help with technology. Participants also reported that family members experienced difficulty when teaching technology use. Family members struggled to explain simple technology tasks and were frustrated by the slow teaching process.ConclusionsThe results suggest that older adults ask their family members, particularly grandchildren, to support them in the use of new technologies. However, family may experience difficulties in providing this support. Older adults will be increasingly expected to use health technologies, and family members may help with tech support. Providers and health systems should consider potential family support and engagement strategies to foster adoption and use among older patients

Digitally Continuous Multivalued Functions, Morphological Operations and Thinning Algorithms
In a recent paper (Escribano et al. in Discrete Geometry for Computer Imagery 2008. Lecture Notes in Computer Science, vol. 4992, pp. 81â92, 2008) we have introduced a notion of continuity in digital spaces which extends the usual notion of digital continuity. Our approach, which uses multivalued functions, provides a better framework to define topological notions, like retractions, in a far more realistic way than by using just single-valued digitally continuous functions.
In this work we develop properties of this family of continuous functions, now concentrating on morphological operations and thinning algorithms. We show that our notion of continuity provides a suitable framework for the basic operations in mathematical morphology: erosion, dilation, closing, and opening. On the other hand, concerning thinning algorithms, we give conditions under which the existence of a retraction F:Xâ¶XâD guarantees that D is deletable. The converse is not true, in general, although it is in certain particular important cases which are at the basis of many thinning algorithms
Contexts of diffusion: Adoption of research synthesis in Social Work and Women's Studies
Texts reveal the subjects of interest in research fields, and the values,
beliefs, and practices of researchers. In this study, texts are examined
through bibliometric mapping and topic modeling to provide a birds eye view of
the social dynamics associated with the diffusion of research synthesis methods
in the contexts of Social Work and Women's Studies. Research synthesis texts
are especially revealing because the methods, which include meta-analysis and
systematic review, are reliant on the availability of past research and data,
sometimes idealized as objective, egalitarian approaches to research
evaluation, fundamentally tied to past research practices, and performed with
the goal informing future research and practice. This study highlights the
co-influence of past and subsequent research within research fields;
illustrates dynamics of the diffusion process; and provides insight into the
cultural contexts of research in Social Work and Women's Studies. This study
suggests the potential to further develop bibliometric mapping and topic
modeling techniques to inform research problem selection and resource

Temporal Structure of Human Gaze Dynamics is Invariant During Free Viewing
We investigate the dynamic structure of human gaze and present an experimental study of the frequency components of the change in gaze position over time during free viewing of computer-generated fractal images. We show that changes in gaze position are scale-invariant in time with statistical properties that are characteristic of a random walk process. We quantify and track changes in the temporal structure using a well-defined scaling parameter called the Hurst exponent, H. We find H is robust regardless of the spatial complexity generated by the fractal images. In addition, we find the Hurst exponent is invariant across all participants, including those with distinct changes to higher order visual processes due to neural degeneration. The value we find for H of 0.57 shows that the gaze dynamics during free viewing of fractal images are consistent with a random walk process with persistent movements. Our research suggests the human visual system may have a common strategy that drives the dynamics of human gaze during exploration
Role of diradylglycerol formation in H2O2 and lactoferrin release in adherent human polymorphonuclear leukocytes
Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) adherent to fibrinogen exhibit a delay in the release of H2O2 in response to fMLP. Previously, we demonstrated that H2O2 release in adherent PMNs coincides with the exocytosis of lactoferrinâcontaining specific granules and activation of phospholipase D (PLD). We also found that chelation of intracellular calcium blocked both lactoferrin and H2O2 release in stimulated PMNs in spite of the fact that adhesion and spreading remained normal. Since diradylglycerol (DRG) formation has been implicated in PMN secretion and oxidant release, we determined the effect of intracellular calcium chelation on PLD activation and DRG formation to ascertain whether DRG formation was coupled to lactoferrin and H2O2 release. We observed that chelation of intracellular calcium with bisâ(Oâaminophenoxy)âethanolâN,N;Nââ tetraacetic add (BAPTA) prevented PLD activation as monitored by inhibition of phosphatidylethanol formation. Formation of DRG derived from phosphatidic acid (PA) was also inhibited in the presence of BAPTA. Following the addition of the calcium ionophore ionomycin to the BAPTAâtreated PMNs, lactoferrin and H2O2 release was coincident with the onset of DRG formation. Also the addition of snâ1,2âdidecanoylglycerol to the BAPTAâtreated PMNs stimulated them to release H2O2. Our studies support the hypothesis that DRG derived from PLD activation is required for degranulation of specific granules and associated H2O2 release from adherent PMNs. J. Leukoc.
