    We address two primary questions. First, what are the values of seismic spectral decay parameter kappa at stations on and around Yucca Mountain. Second, can small and/or moderate earthquakes provide estimates of kappa that are valid for conditions of strong ground motion

    Ground-Rupturing Earthquakes on the Northern Big Bend of the San Andreas Fault, California, 800 A.D. to Present

    Paleoseismic data on the timing of ground-rupturing earthquakes constrain the recurrence behavior of active faults and can provide insight on the rupture history of a fault if earthquakes dated at neighboring sites overlap in age and are considered correlative. This study presents the evidence and ages for 11 earthquakes that occurred along the Big Bend section of the southern San Andreas Fault at the Frazier Mountain paleoseismic site. The most recent earthquake to rupture the site was the Mw7.7–7.9 Fort Tejon earthquake of 1857. We use over 30 trench excavations to document the structural and sedimentological evolution of a small pull-apart basin that has been repeatedly faulted and folded by ground-rupturing earthquakes. A sedimentation rate of 0.4 cm/yr and abundant organic material for radiocarbon dating contribute to a record that is considered complete since 800 A.D. and includes 10 paleoearthquakes. Earthquakes have ruptured this location on average every ~100 years over the last 1200 years, but individual intervals range from ~22 to 186 years. The coefficient of variation of the length of time between earthquakes (0.7) indicates quasiperiodic behavior, similar to other sites along the southern San Andreas Fault. Comparison with the earthquake chronology at neighboring sites along the fault indicates that only one other 1857-size earthquake could have occurred since 1350 A.D., and since 800 A.D., the Big Bend and Mojave sections have ruptured together at most 50% of the time in Mw ≥ 7.3 earthquakes

    A revisit to the region of Collinder 132 using Carte du Ciel and Astrographic Catalogue plates

    Aims. Based on stellar positions and proper motions, we aim to re-analyse the region of the controversial open cluster Collinder 132. Methods. We have developed a model which analyses the proper motion distribution and the stellar density to find moving groups. The astrometric data were obtained from four Carte du Ciel (CdC) and one Astrogaphic Catalogue (AC) plates of the Córdoba Astronomical Observatory collection (Argentina). Results. We detected an open cluster from the field stars and calculated the mean proper motion and the membership probabilities of the region's stars. We report new coordinates of its centre αc = 108\fdg347, δc = -31\fdg011, the components of mean proper motion μ αcosδ = -2.62±0.44 mas/yr, μδ = 4.79±0.88 mas/yr. Thirteen stars are astrometric members giving a value of 20' for the cluster angular diameter. Six stars fulfil the astrometric and photometric criteria for being cluster members and locate the cluster at 360 pc from the Sun. We propose a simple model for the analysis of the proper motion distribution of an association. We report the components of the association mean proper motion μαcosδ = -1.38±0.14 mas/yr, μδ = 2.26±0.16 mas/yr.     SOLANUM LYCOPERSICUM X S. PENNELLII INTROGRESSION LINES WERE USEFUL TO CHARACTERISE THE IONOME OF TOMATO FRUIT

    In the frame of "GenoPom" PON-MIUR project, we have began a study of tomato ionome in order to identify the contribution of specific chromosome and part of them on the ionome. For this purpose, we have analysed by ICP-MS plants of an introgression line (IL) population derived from the cross between Solanum lycopersicum cv. M82 and S. pennellii (Eshed and Zamir, 1995) grown under controlled environmental conditions.we report results derived from tomato whole fruits ionome analysis of 30 IL, covering all 12 tomato chromosomes, along with the recurrent parent cv. M82. Among several detected elements, the following ones have firstly been analysed: Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn and Se. Each element concentration data were referred to cv. M82

    O que mudou no cenário canavieiro 30 anos após o levante de Guariba?

    Em 1984, em Guariba, SP, ocorreu um grande protesto de boias-frias que resultou em mudanças das condições enfrentadas nas lavouras de cana-de-açúcar. Neste trabalho, para avaliar o que mudou nos últimos 30 anos na paisagem, na forma de manejo da cana-de-açúcar, na vida dos trabalhadores rurais e do município, mapeou-se a mudança de uso e cobertura das terras usando imagens de satélite de 1988 e 2013, que foram interpretadas usando o software ArcGis 10.1 e as ferramentas de análise do ArcToolbox. Há 30 anos, a área de cana-de-açúcar tomava 81% do município (22.037 ha) e atualmente ocupa em torno de 23 mil ha, portanto não houve mudança expressiva, qualitativa e quantitativamente, na paisagem rural. Porém, houve aumento expressivo na área urbana do município, que passou de 581 ha para 1.190 ha, provavelmente em decorrência do êxodo da população rural para a cidade e da fixação, no município, dos antigos migrantes sazonais do Nordeste, que se dedicavam à colheita manual da cana-de-açúcar. A mudança gradativa, nos últimos 30 anos, no sistema da colheita manual de cana queimada para a colheita mecanizada sem queima reduziu de 7.000 para 970 o número de boias-frias e fortaleceu o sindicalismo na região. Trinta anos depois da maior greve rural do setor canavieiro, o transporte dos trabalhadores é feito em ônibus, há equipamentos de proteção, as empresas fornecem facões e os salários melhoraram. Entretanto, novas questões trabalhistas surgiram, como terceirização e jornadas de trabalho irregulares, horas extras ilegais, ausência de intervalos de descanso e trabalho noturno
