    Jasmonic acid methyl ester induces xylogenesis and modulates auxin-induced xylary cell identity with NO Involvement

    In Arabidopsis basal hypocotyls of dark-grown seedlings, xylary cells may form from the pericycle as an alternative to adventitious roots. Several hormones may induce xylogenesis, as Jasmonic acid (JA), as well as indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) auxins, which also affect xylary identity. Studies with the ethylene (ET)-perception mutant ein3eil1 and the ET-precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC), also demonstrate ET involvement in IBA-induced ectopic metaxylem. Moreover, nitric oxide (NO), produced after IBA/IAA-treatments, may affect JA signalling and interact positively/negatively with ET. To date, NO-involvement in ET/JA-mediated xylogenesis has never been investigated. To study this, and unravel JA-effects on xylary identity, xylogenesis was investigated in hypocotyls of seedlings treated with JA methyl-ester (JAMe) with/without ACC, IBA, IAA. Wild-type (wt) and ein3eil1 responses to hormonal treatments were compared, and the NO signal was quantified and its role evaluated by using NO-donors/scavengers. Ectopic-protoxylem increased in the wt only after treatment with JAMe(10 μM), whereas in ein3eil1 with any JAMe concentration. NO was detected in cells leading to either xylogenesis or adventitious rooting, and increased after treatment with JAMe(10 μM) combined or not with IBA(10 μM). Xylary identity changed when JAMe was applied with each auxin. Altogether, the results show that xylogenesis is induced by JA and NO positively regulates this process. In addition, NO also negatively interacts with ET-signalling and modulates auxin-induced xylary identity

    Remarks on the interaction between Born-Infeld solitons

    We consider the Abelian Higgs model as well as the SU(2) Georgi-Glashow model in which the gauge field action is replaced by a non linear Born-Infeld action. We study soliton solutions arising in these models, namely the vortex and monopole solutions, respectively. We construct formulas which provide good approximations for the mass of the Born-Infeld deformed solitons using only the data of the undeformed solutions.     A design for an electromagnetic filter for precision energy measurements at the tritium endpoint

    We present a detailed description of the electromagnetic filter for the PTOLEMY project to directly detect the Cosmic Neutrino Background (CNB). Starting with an initial estimate for the orbital magnetic moment, the higher-order drift process of E X B is configured to balance the gradient-B drift motion of the electron in such a way as to guide the trajectory into the standing voltage potential along the mid-plane of the filter. As a function of drift distance along the length of the filter, the filter zooms in with exponentially increasing precision on the transverse velocity component of the electron kinetic energy. This yields a linear dimension for the total filter length that is exceptionally compact compared to previous techniques for electromagnetic filtering. The parallel velocity component of the electron kinetic energy oscillates in an electrostatic harmonic trap as the electron drifts along the length of the filter. An analysis of the phase-space volume conservation validates the expected behavior of the filter from the adiabatic invariance of the orbital magnetic moment and energy conservation following Liouville’s theorem for Hamiltonian systems

    The influence of extraction and precipitation pH on the dry matter yield of broiler dark meat

    Abstract In recent years, demand for white meat products has resulted in excess supplies and depressed prices of leg meat in the United States. One approach to increasing the utilization of dark meat is to extract the pigments and fat to make the resulting product more acceptable for the production of further-processed meat products. To date, such technologies have been inefficient (low yields) or have resulted in products of limited use. Three replicate trials were conducted to determine the effects of extraction pH and precipitation pH on the wet and dry extract yields of boneless, skinless broiler leg meat. Broiler leg meat was chopped with added water and extracted by adjusting the pH to 8.0, 8.5, 9.0, 9.5, 10.0, 10.5, 11.0, 11.5, and 12.0 while mixing. After determination of extraction yields, each extraction was adjusted to pH 3.8, 4.0, 4.2, 4.4, 4.6, 4.8, 5.0, and 5.2 to determine the effect of precipitate pH on total wet and dry yields. Dry yield increased with extraction pH and precipitation pH. However, the greatest yields, over 70%, were at extraction pH values above 10.5, which have been associated with the production of potentially harmful by-products. Combinations of extraction pH values between 9 and 10.5 and precipitation pH values above 4.4 resulted in dry yields of approximately 65%. These results indicate that pH extraction and precipitation may result in economically viable yields. Further research is needed to determine the optimal conditions of yield, composition, and functionality

    Black strings in (4+1)-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills theory

    We study two classes of static uniform black string solutions in a (4+1)-dimensional SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills model. These configurations possess a regular event horizon and corresponds in a 4-dimensional picture to axially symmetric black hole solutions in an Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs-U(1)-dilaton theory. In this approach, one set of solutions possesses a nonzero magnetic charge, while the other solutions represent black holes located in between a monopole-antimonopole pair. A detailed analysis of the solutions' properties is presented, the domain of existence of the black strings being determined. New four dimensional solutions are found by boosting the five dimensional configurations.     Simulation of hydrogenated graphene Field-Effect Transistors through a multiscale approach

    In this work, we present a performance analysis of Field Effect Transistors based on recently fabricated 100% hydrogenated graphene (the so-called graphane) and theoretically predicted semi-hydrogenated graphene (i.e. graphone). The approach is based on accurate calculations of the energy bands by means of GW approximation, subsequently fitted with a three-nearest neighbor (3NN) sp3 tight-binding Hamiltonian, and finally used to compute ballistic transport in transistors based on functionalized graphene. Due to the large energy gap, the proposed devices have many of the advantages provided by one-dimensional graphene nanoribbon FETs, such as large Ion and Ion/Ioff ratios, reduced band-to-band tunneling, without the corresponding disadvantages in terms of prohibitive lithography and patterning requirements for circuit integration

    Neutrino physics with the PTOLEMY project: active neutrino properties and the light sterile case

    The PTOLEMY project aims to develop a scalable design for a Cosmic Neutrino Background (CNB) detector, the first of its kind and the only one conceived that can look directly at the image of the Universe encoded in neutrino background produced in the first second after the Big Bang. The scope of the work for the next three years is to complete the conceptual design of this detector and to validate with direct measurements that the non-neutrino backgrounds are below the expected cosmological signal. In this paper we discuss in details the theoretical aspects of the experiment and its physics goals. In particular, we mainly address three issues. First we discuss the sensitivity of PTOLEMY to the standard neutrino mass scale. We then study the perspectives of the experiment to detect the CNB via neutrino capture on tritium as a function of the neutrino mass scale and the energy resolution of the apparatus. Finally, we consider an extra sterile neutrino with mass in the eV range, coupled to the active states via oscillations, which has been advocated in view of neutrino oscillation anomalies. This extra state would contribute to the tritium decay spectrum, and its properties, mass and mixing angle, could be studied by analyzing the features in the beta decay electron spectrum

    This essay discusses the development of key geometric ideas in the 19th century which led to the formulation of the concept of an abstract manifold (which was not necessarily tied to an ambient Euclidean space) by Hermann Weyl in 1913.     Color variation and characterization of broiler breast meat during processing in Italy

    The variation in broiler breast meat color (L*a*b*) which normally occurs during processing was evaluated using a Minolta Chroma Meter on a total of 6,997 broiler breast fillets (P. major muscles) from a total of 79 different flocks. The samples were randomly collected at 3-6 h post-mortem from the deboning line at a single major Italian processing plant. In addition, a total of 216 fillets were selected based on lightness (L*) values as being dark (L*56) and analyzed for ultimate pH, intact and ground meat cooking loss and shear value. The overall range in measured lightness (L*) was considerable and varied from 40 (dark) to 66 (pale) indicating that high breast meat color variation during processing could exist. Broiler breast meat during summer was found to be paler (+1.7 L* unit), less red (-1.0 a* unit) and less yellow (-0.7 b* unit) than breast meat samples collected during the winter confirming that the incidence of pale meat is greater during summer as indicated by non-scientific observations of plant personnel. It was also determined that paler (L*>56) breast meat is associated with lower ultimate pH and poorer water holding capacity, while dark (L*<50) breast meat is associated with higher muscle pH and cooking yield
