Early forest fire detection by vision-enabled wireless sensor networks

Wireless sensor networks constitute a powerful technology particularly suitable for environmental monitoring. With regard to wildfires, they enable low-cost fine-grained surveillance of hazardous locations like wildland-urban interfaces. This paper presents work developed during the last 4 years targeting a vision-enabled wireless sensor network node for the reliable, early on-site detection of forest fires. The tasks carried out ranged from devising a robust vision algorithm for smoke detection to the design and physical implementation of a power-efficient smart imager tailored to the characteristics of such an algorithm. By integrating this smart imager with a commercial wireless platform, we endowed the resulting system with vision capabilities and radio communication. Numerous tests were arranged in different natural scenarios in order to progressively tune all the parameters involved in the autonomous operation of this prototype node. The last test carried out, involving the prescribed burning of a 95 x 20-m shrub plot, confirmed the high degree of reliability of our approach in terms of both successful early detection and a very low false-alarm rate. Crescimento e produção em quiabeiro com doses de nitrogênio.

O crescimento e a produção do quiabeiro são afetados pela deficiência de N. Objetivou-se avaliar, no período chuvoso amazônico, em Argissolo Amarelo distrófico textura média, o efeito de doses de uréia em cobertura sobre atributos do crescimento e de produção da cv. híbrida Dardo, incluindo-se a cv. não-híbrida Santa Cruz-47 e o esterco de galinha como fatores adicionais. O ensaio foi conduzido na Embrapa Amazônia Ocidental, Iranduba-AM, de outubro/2010 a fevereiro/2011

Synthesis and applications of cell wall glycopolimer fragments from Staphilococci and Enterococci

Carbohydrates are present on the surface of bacteria making them suitable antigen candidates for vaccine development. This thesis deals with the synthesis of two carbohydrate-based components; the capsular polisaccharide of S. aureus type 5 and teichoic acids from staphilococci and enterococci species. The synthesis of well-defined structures can allow an in-depth characterization of antigen-antibody binding that ultimately can help the development of robust and high effective vaccine. In the case of teichoic acids for example, it has been introduced the application of a microarray technology to streamline the preferential binding of immune proteins from different sources. The binding towards teichoic acids like structures has been further explore by developing a monoclonal antibody starting from a fully sinthetic glycoconjugate. Different techniques have been used which in conclusion suggest an indirect contribution of the glycosidic appandage to the binding towards the glycerol-phosphate backbone.Bio-organic Synthesi

Saccharomyces boulardii: a summary of the evidence for gastroenterology clinical practice in adults and children.

Probiotics are viable, nonpathogenic microorganisms (bacteria or yeast) which when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. At this time, Saccharomyces boulardii is the only yeast commonly used in clinical practice. Literature on this probiotic is wide and even more data become available each year. Thus, it could be problematic for a physician summarize all the best information deriving from basic research and clinical studies. With the aim to help physicians in the use of Saccharomyces boulardii, this paper focuses on the available evidences for its efficacy and safety in different diseases in adult and pediatric patients in order to provide a practical guidance for gastroenterology clinical practice. Indications and dosage for several gastrointestinal diseases for a correct use of this probiotic are provided, and recent insights on its mechanisms of action and possible future clinical application are also discussed

A Preliminary 1D-3D Analysis of the Darmstadt Research Engine under Motored Condition

In the present paper, 1D and 3D CFD models of the Darmstadt research engine undergo a preliminary validation against the available experimental dataset at motored condition. The Darmstadt engine is a single-cylinder optical research unit and the chosen operating point is characterized by a revving speed equal to 800 rpm with intake temperature and pressure of 24 \ub0C and 0.95 bar, respectively. Experimental data are available from the TU Darmstadt engine research group. Several aspects of the engine are analyzed, such as crevice modeling, blow-by, heat transfer and compression ratio, with the aim to minimize numerical uncertainties. On the one hand, a GT-Power model of the engine is used to investigate the impact of blow-by and crevices modeling during compression and expansion strokes. Moreover, it provides boundary conditions for the following 3D CFD simulations. On the other hand, the latter, carried out in a RANS framework with both highand low-Reynolds wall treatments, allow a deeper investigation of the boundary layer phenomena and, thus, of the gas-to-wall heat transfer. A detailed modeling of the crevice, along with an ad hoc tuning of both blow-by and heat fluxes lead to a remarkable improvement of the results. However, in order to adequately match the experimental mean in-cylinder pressure, a slight modification of the compression ratio from the nominal value is accounted for, based on the uncertainty which usually characterizes such geometrical parameter. The present preliminary study aims at providing reliable numerical setups for 1D and 3D models to be adopted in future detailed investigations on the Darmstadt research engine
