The present paper is based on a clinical situation in which the patient seeks an analysis because all her love relationships failed causing intense suffering. Along the treatment she says that she knows why her relationships come to an end: She stinks. We formulate the clinical hypothesis that stench is inserted into the patient’s psychic economy as a defense mechanism and, taking the concept of narcissism as a guide, we discuss the role of the olfactory hallucination as a psychic support for the patient. © 2009 Associação Universitária de Pesquisa em Psicopatologia Fundamental/University Association for Research in Fundamental Psychopathology.19342043

Jean Colombier and François Doublet were the authors of Instructions on How to Control the Insane and Work toward their Cure in Asylums to Which They Are Sent. This book was the first document of a reformist character about the situation of mental patients, and indicated criteria that 19th-century psychiatry should follow. Countertransference And The Psychoanalytic Setting In Pierre Fédida [contratransferência E Enquadre Psicanalítico Em Pierre Fédida]

The objective here is to discuss Pierre Fedida's broad and complex thinking regarding psychoanalytic technique through an articulation of the notions of countertransference and setting in the psychoanalytic clinic. The model implicit in Fedida's conception of countertransference is the fictitious mother-baby relationship, where the mother is a receiver able to be in resonance with the child's psychic state. As a result, she can activate the baby's language and consequently alleviate its suffering. Fedida sees in the countertransference a function that regulates the "intersubjective experience" between analyst and patient and has a function of para-excitation, governed at a pre-conscious level of naming. This is what sustains the analytic setting as a space of potency that engenders an analytic situation. We also call attention to the evocative style of Fedida's writing, as it mobilizes thinking and insight proper to Freudian metapsychology.
