    Maternal Condition Does Not Influence Birth Sex Ratios in Anubis Baboons (Papio anubis)

    Trivers and Willard predicted that when parental condition has differential effects on the fitness of male and female offspring, parents who are in good condition will bias investment toward the sex that benefits most from additional investment. Efforts to test predictions derived from Trivers and Willard's model have had mixed results, perhaps because most studies have relied on proxy measures of parental condition, such as dominance rank. Here, we examine the effects of female baboons condition on birth sex ratios and post-natal investment, based on visual assessments of maternal body condition. We find that local environmental conditions have significant effects on female condition, but maternal condition at conception has no consistent relationship with birth sex ratios. Mothers who are in poorer condition at the time of conception resume cycling significantly later than females who are in better condition, but the sex of their infants has no effect on the time to resumption of cycling. Thus, our findings provide strong evidence that maternal condition influences females' ability to reproduce, but females do not facultatively adjust the sex ratio of their offspring in relation to their dominance rank or current condition

    The study of inequities in health is a critical component of monitoring government obligations to uphold the rights of Indigenous Peoples. In Aotearoa/New Zealand the indigenous Māori population has a substantially younger age structure than the non-indigenous population making it necessary to account for age differences when comparing population health outcomes. An age-standardised rate is a summary measure of a rate that a population would have if it had a standard age structure. Changing age standards have stimulated interest in the potential impact of population standards on disparities data and consequently on health policy

    Diagnostic accuracy of cyst fluid amphiregulin in pancreatic cysts

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Accurate tests to diagnose adenocarcinoma and high-grade dysplasia among mucinous pancreatic cysts are clinically needed. This study evaluated the diagnostic utility of amphiregulin (AREG) as a pancreatic cyst fluid biomarker to differentiate non-mucinous, benign mucinous, and malignant mucinous cysts.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A single-center retrospective study to evaluate AREG levels in pancreatic cyst fluid by ELISA from 33 patients with a histological gold standard was performed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Among the cyst fluid samples, the median (IQR) AREG levels for non-mucinous (n = 6), benign mucinous (n = 15), and cancerous cysts (n = 15) were 85 pg/ml (47-168), 63 pg/ml (30-847), and 986 pg/ml (417-3160), respectively. A significant difference between benign mucinous and malignant mucinous cysts was observed (<it>p </it>= 0.025). AREG levels greater than 300 pg/ml possessed a diagnostic accuracy for cancer or high-grade dysplasia of 78% (sensitivity 83%, specificity 73%).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Cyst fluid AREG levels are significantly higher in cancerous and high-grade dysplastic cysts compared to benign mucinous cysts. Thus AREG exhibits potential clinical utility in the evaluation of pancreatic cysts.</p

    Barriers and facilitators to using NHS Direct: a qualitative study of ‘users’ and ‘non-users’

    Background NHS Direct, introduced in 1998, has provided 24/7 telephone-based healthcare advice and information to the public in England and Wales. National studies have suggested variation in the uptake of this service amongst the UKÂżs diverse population. This study provides the first exploration of the barriers and facilitators that impact upon the uptake of this service from the perspectives of both `usersÂż and `non- usersÂż. Methods Focus groups were held with NHS Direct `usersÂż (N?=?2) from Bedfordshire alongside `non-usersÂż from Manchester (N?=?3) and Mendip, Somerset (N?=?4). Each focus group had between five to eight participants. A total of eighty one people aged between 21 and 94 years old (M: 58.90, SD: 22.70) took part in this research. Each focus group discussion lasted approximately 90 minutes and was audiotape-recorded with participantsÂż permission. The recordings were transcribed verbatim. A framework approach was used to analyse the transcripts. Results The findings from this research uncovered a range of barriers and facilitators that impact upon the uptake of NHS Direct. `Non-usersÂż were unaware of the range of services that NHS Direct provided. Furthermore, `non-usersÂż highlighted a preference for face-to face communication, identifying a lack of confidence in discussing healthcare over the telephone. This was particularly evident among older people with cognitive difficulties. The cost to telephone a `0845Âż number from a mobile was also viewed to be a barrier to access NHS Direct, expressed more often by `non-usersÂż from deprived communities. NHS Direct `usersÂż identified that awareness, ease of use and convenience were facilitators which influenced their decision to use the service. Conclusions An understanding of the barriers and facilitators which impact on the access and uptake of telephone-based healthcare is essential to move patients towards the self-care model.     Bovine cryptosporidiosis: impact, host-parasite interaction and control strategies

    International audienceAbstractGastrointestinal disease caused by the apicomplexan parasite Cryptosporidium parvum is one of the most important diseases of young ruminant livestock, particularly neonatal calves. Infected animals may suffer from profuse watery diarrhoea, dehydration and in severe cases death can occur. At present, effective therapeutic and preventative measures are not available and a better understanding of the host–pathogen interactions is required. Cryptosporidium parvum is also an important zoonotic pathogen causing severe disease in people, with young children being particularly vulnerable. Our knowledge of the immune responses induced by Cryptosporidium parasites in clinically relevant hosts is very limited. This review discusses the impact of bovine cryptosporidiosis and describes how a thorough understanding of the host–pathogen interactions may help to identify novel prevention and control strategies

    Files and programs required to perform the following tasks, in relation to the Validated Splicing Mutation Beacon and validsplicemut.cytognomix.com website: - Expression Data Processing (where downloaded microarray and RNAseq processing data from several sources) is processed. This involves programs which assign microarray probenames gene names based on microarray library files, average genes with multiple probes, and outputs a file which consists of a list of gene names and expression values averaged from normal tissue of a particular type. - Histogram input generating programs, which read in the processed expression data files (described above) and outputs the number of genes which fit within certain bins (range of expression values). - IGV bash script generating program which reads in the processed Veridical data set, filters for those which meet a certain criteria, and outputs a single bash script to be read by IGV to take a screenshot of each region of interest in the patient BAM file of interest There are additional "READ ME" files for each Perl program within each repositories
