Mopathy in acromegaly

Clinical, biochemical, electromyographic, and pathological studies of neuromuscular function were carried out in a group of eleven acromegalics. Mild proximal muscle weakness was present in six cases and serum-levels of creatine phosphokinase were elevated in five. The average mean action potential duration in the deltoid and rectus femoris muscles in the acromegalics was significantly shorter than in a group of controls. Histological changes were present in five of nine biopsy specimens taken from a proximal limb muscle and histochemical stains showed hypertrophy of both type-I and type-II muscle fibres. Electron microscopy showed enlargement of sarcolemmal nuclei and satellite cells, considerable amounts of glycogen and lipofuscin, and, in 1 case, membrane configurations possibly derived from degenerating mitochondria. The findings indicate that the proximal muscles of acromegalics are commonly the site of a patchy myopathic process which is probably the basis for the muscular symptoms in this condition but which may be asymptomatic

Dermatopolimiosite: avaliação de 63 pacientes

Sessenta e três pacientes com dermatopolimiosite são avaliados mediante exames clínico, laboratorial, eletroneuromiográfico e anatomopatológico (tecido muscular corado pela hematoxilina-eosina) e pela resposta terapêutica. Trinta e nove são do sexo feminino e 24 do sexo masculino. Média etária de 36,83 ± 15,64 anos. Duração média da doença de 3,74 ± 4,26 anos. São verificadas influências do uso de corticosteróides e ou drogas citolíticas no comportamento enzimático e resposta clínica dos pacientes. Análises são realizadas com intuito de se determinar fatores que pudessem definir os grupos quanto a resposta clínica à terapêutica empregada

Review of Particle Physics

This biennial review summarizes much of Particle Physics. Using data from previous editions, plus 1900 new measurements from 700 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We also summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as Higgs bosons, heavy neutrinos, and supersymmetric particles. All the particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We also give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as the Standard Model, particle detectors, probability, and statistics.
