Unlearned Lessons from Risk, Debt Service, Bank Credit, and Asymmetric Information
This paper presents a model of the economy that explains the economic bubbles, based on bank credit, debt service and risk. In the first period of the model, banks offer too much credit seeking to maximise their expected profits. The excessive debt created in the boom period generates, in the second-period, the expansion of the debt bubble, which induces failures in the financial market and the downturn of the overall economy. Business cycles are inherent in the free market systems. They may be caused by endogenous factors of financial markets and, given the absence of adequate, effective regulation, they may be unavoidable. Credit crunch in the financial market is therefore highly probable. In order to reduce substantially the risk of such occurrences, economic and financial policies are proposed. Key words: Asymmetric information, bank credit, risk, debt service and business cycle
The GREATS H+[OIII] Luminosity Function and Galaxy Properties at : Walking the Way of JWST
The James Webb Space Telescope will allow to spectroscopically study an
unprecedented number of galaxies deep into the reionization era, notably by
detecting [OIII] and H nebular emission lines. To efficiently prepare
such observations, we photometrically select a large sample of galaxies at
and study their rest-frame optical emission lines. Combining data from
the GOODS Re-ionization Era wide-Area Treasury from Spitzer (GREATS) survey and
from HST, we perform spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, using
synthetic SEDs from a large grid of photoionization models. The deep
Spitzer/IRAC data combined with our models exploring a large parameter space
enables to constrain the [OIII]+H fluxes and equivalent widths for our
sample, as well as the average physical properties of galaxies, such
as the ionizing photon production efficiency with
. We
find a relatively tight correlation between the [OIII]+H and UV
luminosity, which we use to derive for the first time the [OIII]+H
luminosity function (LF) at . The [OIII]+H LF is higher
at all luminosities compared to lower redshift, as opposed to the UV LF, due to
an increase of the [OIII]+H luminosity at a given UV luminosity from
to . Finally, using the [OIII]+H LF, we make
predictions for JWST/NIRSpec number counts of galaxies. We find that
the current wide-area extragalactic legacy fields are too shallow to use JWST
at maximal efficiency for spectroscopy even at 1hr depth and JWST
pre-imaging to mag will be required.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Use of drug-eluting vs. bare-metal stents after an acute coronary syndrome in Portugal: The EURHOBOP study
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The interventional cardiologist chooses a specific stent type based on the risk-benefit profile for each case. In general, drug-eluting stents should be considered in all clinical conditions, except if there are concerns or contraindications for prolonged dual antiplatelet therapy. The aim of this work was to describe the use of bare-metal vs. drug-eluting stents in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) after an acute coronary syndrome in Portuguese hospitals, according to patients' demographic and clinical characteristics and institutional characteristics.
METHODS: Within the EURopean Hospital Benchmarking Processes (EURHOBOP) study, we retrospectively assessed 3009 consecutive patients in 10 Portuguese hospitals in 2009. Only patients with stents implanted during PCI (n=1194) were analyzed.
RESULTS: A total of 425 patients (36%) received a bare-metal stent and 769 patients (64%) received a drug-eluting stent. A history of previous PCI, current non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction, anterior descending artery as the infarct-related artery and being initially admitted to a hospital with a catheterization laboratory were associated with drug-eluting stent implantation. Age under 45 or over 80, anemia and previous anticoagulation and/or atrial fibrillation were associated with bare-metal stent use.
CONCLUSIONS: Approximately two-thirds of patients received drug-eluting stents, which were less frequently implanted in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction, aged over 80 years, female, with a previous history of stroke, anticoagulation and/or atrial fibrillation and anemia. Patients who had previously undergone PCI and those with the anterior descending artery as the infarct-related artery were more likely to receive a drug-eluting stent

Gaussian superpositions in scalar-tensor quantum cosmological models
A free scalar field minimally coupled to gravity model is quantized and the
Wheeler-DeWitt equation in minisuperspace is solved analytically, exhibiting
positive and negative frequency modes. The analysis is performed for positive,
negative and zero values of the curvature of the spatial section. Gaussian
superpositions of the modes are constructed, and the quantum bohmian
trajectories are determined in the framework of the Bohm-de Broglie
interpretation of quantum cosmology. Oscillating universes appear in all cases,
but with a characteristic scale of the order of the Planck scale. Bouncing
regular solutions emerge for the flat curvature case. They contract classically
from infinity until a minimum size, where quantum effects become important
acting as repulsive forces avoiding the singularity and creating an
inflationary phase, expanding afterwards to an infinite size, approaching the
classical expansion as long as the scale factor increases. These are
non-singular solutions which are viable models to describe the early Universe.Comment: 14 pages, LaTeX, 3 Postscript figures, uses graficx.st
