    Levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1, eicosanoids and cytokines in ascites of patients with liver cirrhosis, peritoneal cancer and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis

    The levels of the eicosanoids leukotriene B4, prostaglandin E2, prostacycline and thromboxane B2, the cytokines interleukin-1ÎČ, interleukin-6 and tumour necrosis factor-α and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 were measured in ascites and plasma samples of patients with liver cirrhosis (53), peritoneal cancer (26) and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (10) to assess their value as a possible diagnostic and prognostic parameter in the course of the disease. Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1, of the eicosanoids prostaglandin E2 and leukotriene B4, and the protein concentration in ascites were all significantly elevated in ascites of patients with peritoneal cancer in comparison to ascites of patients with liver cirrhosis. In ascites of patients with spontaneous bacterial infection interleukin-6 concentration was significantly elevated and the protein concentration was significantly lower in comparison to the other two groups. None of these parameters, however, seems to be of practical use as a diagnostic parameter, as there is an overlap between all the levels of these mediators in ascites of liver cirrhosis, peritoneal cancer and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis group. Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 levels were much higher in plasma than in ascites, in contrast to interleukin-6 levels which were much higher in ascites than in plasma. Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 in ascites correlated with soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 in plasma (r = 0.6926, P = 0.0001). Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1, interleukin-6 and the number of polymorphonuclear cells in peritoneal fluid correlated during episodes of infection in patients with a peritonitis. For this reason soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 and interleukin-6 could be of prognostic value for patients with peritonitis

    Progress against laryngeal cancer in The Netherlands between 1989 and 2010

    Cancer of the larynx is a frequently occurring head and neck cancer in The Netherlands. The main risk factors are smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. The aim of our study was to evaluate the progress against laryngeal cancer by studying trends in incidence, mortality and survival in The Netherlands. All patients in The Netherlands Cancer Registry diagnosed with invasive primary squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx during the period 1989-2010 were included for analysis. Time trends in incidence, mortality, treatment and survival were described for the total group and stratified by sex and subsite: glottis, supraglottis and subglottis. The most frequently affected subsite for men was the glottis (69%) and for women the supraglottis (55%). Glottic cancer was diagnosed at lower stages than supraglottic cancer. Incidence and mortality rates decreased for males with -2.5 and -2.8% per year, respectively, but remained stable for women, except for an increasing mortality rate in older women (EAPC: +2.5%). Five-year relative survival rates were stable for glottic (85%) and supraglottic (50%) cancer, whereas patients with high-staged cancers more often received radiotherapy. Multivariable analysis showed lower relative excess risks of dying for women, younger patients (<75 years), glottic cancer, lower stage cancer and those undergoing surgery. Changes in incidence and mortality rates are in line with changing smoking habits in The Netherlands. Declining incidence with stable survival rates gives rise to hope and worry at the same time. What's new? Cancer of the larynx is a common malignancy in The Netherlands and is linked to smoking and abundant alcohol consumption. As this study shows, however, while incidence and mortality rates for laryngeal cancer decreased for Dutch males over the period 1989-2010, in line with changes in smoking habits, rates remained stable or increased for women. Furthermore, the application of radiotherapy increased in patients with high-staged cancer, but five-year relative survival rates remained

    GWA Mapping of Anthocyanin Accumulation Reveals Balancing Selection of MYB90 in Arabidopsis thaliana

    Induction of anthocyanin accumulation by osmotic stress was assessed in 360 accessions of Arabidopsis thaliana. A wide range of natural variation, with phenotypes ranging from green to completely red/purple rosettes, was observed. A genome wide association (GWA) mapping approach revealed that sequence diversity in a small 15 kb region on chromosome 1 explained 40% of the variation observed. Sequence and expression analyses of alleles ofthe candidate gene MYB90 identified a causal polymorphism at amino acid (AA) position 210 of this transcription factor of the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway. This amino acid discriminates the two most frequent alleles of MYB90. Both alleles are present in a substantial part of the population, suggesting balancing selection between these two alleles. Analysis of the geographical origin of the studied accessions suggests that the macro climate is not the driving force behind positive or negative selection for anthocyanin accumulation. An important role for local climatic conditions is, therefore, suggested.     Sinonasal cancer in The Netherlands: Follow-up of a population-based study 1989-2014 and incidence of occupation-related adenocarcinoma

    BACKGROUND: Long-term trends of sinonasal cancer in The Netherlands have been investigated with particular attention on adenocarcinoma for which wood or leather dust is a well-known risk factor. METHODS: All 4345 patients (1989-2014) registered in the Netherlands Cancer Registry were included. Standardized 3-year moving incidence rates per 1 000 000/person-years, and estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) were calculated. RESULTS: Forty-seven percent of the patients had squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), 12% had lymphoma, and 12% had adenocarcinoma. Sixty-one percent of the tumors were located in the nasal cavity, 22% in the maxillary, and 11% in the ethmoidal sinus. Male incidence decreased to 11.5/1 000 000 due to less SCC (EAPC -0.9%; 95% confidence interval [CI] -1.6 to 0.3) and adenocarcinoma (EAPC -4.3%; 95% CI -5.5 to 3.1). Female incidence increased to 7/1 000 000 (EAPC +2.0%; 95% CI +1.1 to +3.0) due to more SCC (EAPC +2.2%; 95% CI +1.0 to +3.5), whereas adenocarcinoma remained stable (0.6/1 000 000; EAPC +1.1%; 95% CI -6.0 to +8.7). Tumors of the nasal cavity increased in women (EAPC +3.3%; 95% CI +2.0 to 4.7). CONCLUSION: The decrease of male sinonasal adenocarcinoma may be the result of preventive measures combined with less workers in high-risk occupations

    Characterization of the long-distance dispersal of Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense) in a vegetated irrigation channel

    International audienceHydrochorous dispersal may play a major role in the propagation of weeds such as Sorghum halepense (Johnsongrass). However, the long‐distance dispersal of this weed via agricultural intermittent channel networks, such as irrigation channels, has been poorly studied. In this study, we focused on a seed dispersal kernel obtained after an irrigation event in a vegetated channel. The main objectives of the study were to highlight the specificities of irrigation channels in relation to seed transport and investigate hydraulic factors and microscale channel features associated with the deposition of seeds along the channel. Our results showed that despite very different flow and morphological conditions compared with natural waterways, seeds of Johnsongrass were able to travel hundred meters at the scale of one irrigation event. This is likely due to the floating ability of more than 50% of the Johnsongrass seeds. A Regression Tree algorithm, which explained 72% of seed deposition variability, showed the importance of the channel features such as the width of the section and the hydraulic structures, sluice gates and culvert, to explain the patterns of seed deposition. A complex role of the emergent vegetation was highlighted. The results suggest that a threshold of vegetation density should be reached to enhance seed deposition. The results indicate that the spread of existing Johnsongrass populations could be limited by preserving existing hydraulic structures or maintaining areas where the density of terrestrial vegetation is sufficient to enhance seed retention downstream
