A forestry application simulation of man-machine techniques for analyzing remotely sensed data
The typical steps in the analysis of remotely sensed data for a forestry applications example are simulated. The example uses numerically-oriented pattern recognition techniques and emphasizes man-machine interaction
Comment on "Control landscapes are almost always trap free: a geometric assessment"
We analyze a recent claim that almost all closed, finite dimensional quantum
systems have trap-free (i.e., free from local optima) landscapes (B. Russell
et.al. J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 50, 205302 (2017)). We point out several errors
in the proof which compromise the authors' conclusion.
Interested readers are highly encouraged to take a look at the "rebuttal"
(see Ref. [1]) of this comment published by the authors of the criticized work.
This "rebuttal" is a showcase of the way the erroneous and misleading
statements under discussion will be wrapped up and injected in their future
works, such as R. L. Kosut et.al, arXiv:1810.04362 [quant-ph] (2018).Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur
Multiple spacecraft observations of interplanetary shocks: Characteristics of the upstream ULF turbulence
All interplanetary shocks observed by ISEE-3 and either ISEE-1 or ISEE-2 or both in 1978 and 1979 are examined for evidence of upstream waves. In order to characterize the properties of these shocks it is necessary to determine accurate shock normals. An overdetermined set of equations were inverted to obtain shock normals, velocities and error estimates for all these shocks. Tests of the method indicate it is quite reliable. Using these normals the Mach number and angle were between the interplanetary magnetic field and the shock normal for each shock. The upstream waves were separated into two classes: whistler mode precursors which occur at low Mach numbers and upstream turbulence whose amplitude at Mach numbers greater than 1.5 is controlled by the angle of the field to the shock normal. The former waves are right hand circularly polarized and quite monochromatic. The latter waves are more linearly polarized and have a broadband featureless spectrum
Crew appliance concepts. Volume 4, appendix C: Modular space station appliances supporting engineering data
Data collected for the appliances considered for the space station are presented along with plotted and tabulated trade study results for each appliance. The food management, and personal hygiene data are applicable to a six-man mission of 180-days
Crew appliance study
Viable crew appliance concepts were identified by means of a thorough literature search. Studies were made of the food management, personal hygiene, housekeeping, and off-duty habitability functions to determine which concepts best satisfy the Space Shuttle Orbiter and Modular Space Station mission requirements. Models of selected appliance concepts not currently included in the generalized environmental-thermal control and life support systems computer program were developed and validated. Development plans of selected concepts were generated for future reference. A shuttle freezer conceptual design was developed and a test support activity was provided for regenerative environmental control life support subsystems
Comparison of data on Mutation Frequencies of Mice Caused by Radiation - Low Dose Model -
We propose LD(Low Dose) model, the extension of LDM model which was proposed
in the previous paper [Y. Manabe et al.: J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 81 (2012) 104004]
to estimate biological damage caused by irradiation. LD model takes account of
all the considerable effects including cell death effect as well as
proliferation, apoptosis, repair. As a typical example of estimation, we apply
LD model to the experiment of mutation frequency on the responses induced by
the exposure to low levels of ionizing radiation. The most famous and extensive
experiments are those summarized by Russell and Kelly [Russell, W. L. & Kelly,
E. M: Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA 79 (1982) 539-541], which are known as
'Mega-mouse project'. This provides us with important information of the
frequencies of transmitted specific-locus mutations induced in mouse
spermatogonia stem-cells. It is found that the numerical results of the
mutation frequency of mice are in reasonable agreement with the experimental
data: the LD model reproduces the total dose and dose rate dependence of data
reasonably. In order to see such dose-rate dependence more explicitly, we
introduce the dose-rate effectiveness factor (DREF). This represents a sort of
preventable effects such as repair, apoptosis and death of broken cells, which
are to be competitive with proliferation effect of broken cells induced by
irradiation.Comment: subimitting to J. Phys. Soc. Jpn, 32 pages, 8 figure
Alfvén waves in solar flares
Solar flares are dramatic events in which magnetic reconnection in the corona leads to heating of plasma to tens of MK and acceleration of particles to high energies. They also centrally involve transport between the corona (where the magnetic reconnection occurs) and the lower solar atmosphere (where most energy is radiated from). There is substantial evidence for the presence of Alfvénic waves/turbulence in solar flares, for example, in the ubiquitous nonthermal broadening of flare spectral lines. The physical role that Alfvénic waves have in the flare has attracted considerable attention, especially since 2007–2010. This article reviews what spectroscopic observations reveal about the properties and importance of Alfvénic waves, turbulence and transport in solar flares; mechanisms for wave excitation by magnetic reconnection at high Lundquist numbers and braking of the sunward reconnection jet; and models of wave energy transport to the lower atmosphere and the resulting heating and dynamics. The article finishes with discussion of the outlook for new progress.Postprin
