Green golf tourism: the golfer’s perspective

Published ArticleThe beautiful settings found on a golf course hide the true impact it have on the environment. It was important to establish whether golf tourists prefer a golf course and destination that sustain the environment over those that did not and whether they were willing to sacrifice some aspects of the game that traditionally made golf enjoyable in order to protect the environment. The population of this study was the members of and visitors to George Golf Club and Pinnacle Point in Mossel Bay. A questionnaire was used to personally interview 277 respondents by means of the simple random sampling approach. Results indicated that respondents’ considered price an important factor when choosing a golf course and destination. Unfortunately, no conscious decision was made to select a golf course and destination that was environmentally friendly. Respondents clearly indicated that a golf course should be designed to conserve the environment, but they would not pay more to play on an eco-friendly golf course. The results implied that “green” golf is misrepresented and misunderstood in South Africa. Respondents associated “green” as an expensive lifestyle that only a few could afford. Golf tourists should know that “green” golf tourism could lead to a sustainable and responsible lifestyle

Nicknames as sex-role stereotypes

Nicknames are powerful indicators of attitudes towards gender categories and because of their transient and optional nature, it has been argued that they are more likely to show a closer relationship to ongoing trends in the culture and society than other more fixed parts of the language E. B. Phillips (1990) ["Nicknames and Sex Role Stereotypes," Sex Roles, Vol. 23, pp. 281-289]. This study reports on a survey of nickname usage among a group of South African adolescents from mixed socioeconomic backgrounds (approximately 25% other than white) in an attempt to explicate gender-linked trends in frequency of occurrence, usage and attitudes to such special names. It reveals that conventions regarding nickname coinage and usage are intimately connected to the gender of bearers and users, and that more males have nicknames and coin them than females; it also shows significant sex-linked differences in the linguistic sources and users of nicknames, and reveals a greater tendency for female nicknames to function as indicators of affection rather than for humorous or critical effect. It could be argued that these trends could be linked to the nurturing and nurtured role of females in society, and to the differences in social power generally between males and females

The sound patterns of English nicknames

The English lexicon has been found to reflect certain recognisable phonological preferences in relation to consonants, vowels, stress patterns and syllabic structure, and these trends have been reflected in sharper terms in analyses of particular subsets of vocabulary: phonaesthetic words (Crystal, 1995b) and first names (Cutler et al., 1994). Because nicknames are relatively impermanent informal names which allow users considerable linguistic licence in breaking the rules, this study analyses the phonological patterns of English nicknames in order to test the validity of the claims which have been made about English phonological preferences in general and specifically in names and favoured words. The study focuses specifically on nicknames reportedly used with positive social intent, in order to test whether positive nicknames follow more closely the phonological trends in phonaesthetic English words. The study reveals clear evidence of particular consonantal and vocalic preferences in nicknames as well as trends in terms of stress and syllabic structure, which can be argued to be linked to either the social intent of the nickname user or the gender of the bearer, which suggests evidence of some sound-symbolism at work in English nicknames

Improved bounds for the crossing numbers of K_m,n and K_n

It has been long--conjectured that the crossing number cr(K_m,n) of the complete bipartite graph K_m,n equals the Zarankiewicz Number Z(m,n):= floor((m-1)/2) floor(m/2) floor((n-1)/2) floor(n/2). Another long--standing conjecture states that the crossing number cr(K_n) of the complete graph K_n equals Z(n):= floor(n/2) floor((n-1)/2) floor((n-2)/2) floor((n-3)/2)/4. In this paper we show the following improved bounds on the asymptotic ratios of these crossing numbers and their conjectured values: (i) for each fixed m >= 9, lim_{n->infty} cr(K_m,n)/Z(m,n) >= 0.83m/(m-1); (ii) lim_{n->infty} cr(K_n,n)/Z(n,n) >= 0.83; and (iii) lim_{n->infty} cr(K_n)/Z(n) >= 0.83. The previous best known lower bounds were 0.8m/(m-1), 0.8, and 0.8, respectively. These improved bounds are obtained as a consequence of the new bound cr(K_{7,n}) >= 2.1796n^2 - 4.5n. To obtain this improved lower bound for cr(K_{7,n}), we use some elementary topological facts on drawings of K_{2,7} to set up a quadratic program on 6! variables whose minimum p satisfies cr(K_{7,n}) >= (p/2)n^2 - 4.5n, and then use state--of--the--art quadratic optimization techniques combined with a bit of invariant theory of permutation groups to show that p >= 4.3593.Comment: LaTeX, 18 pages, 2 figure

A feral family on our doorstep

A family was discovered living in isolation in the Free State region of South Africa. Certain members of this family, (the mother and three sons and a daughter) displayed primitive and ape-like behaviour, prompting the local and international press to refer to them as a feral family. The affected members of the family are presented as a case study describing how the family became isolated, their response to outside intervention and eventually how the family was “discovered”. Clinical presentations are also documented as well as the therapeutic interventions used. After evaluation, the affected members of the family were shown to have various degrees of mental retardation. The words ‘feral' and ‘neglect' are defined and certain similar documented cases of feral children discovered previously in other regions are mentioned. The etiology of the condition is explored, discussing the effects of the environment on various aspects of neural development in children, especially referring to the lack of neuro-stimulation and other insults to the brain during the critical phase of brain plasticity. Cognitive deficits, poor mastery of language and decrease in brain size are often found in feral children. The role of a child's genetic predisposition and a paucity of environmental stimulation is also explained in the article. South African Psychiatry Review Vol. 9(4) 2006: 231-23

Bildung als eigentijdse zoektocht?

Mijn onderzoek ‘Bildung als eigentijdse zoektocht’ behelst zowel een historisch als een thematisch filosofisch onderzoek. De onderzoeksvraag luidt: wat is de relatie tussen Bildung en rationele instrumentaliteit en kan als ‘nieuwe’ mogelijkheid Bildung ten opzichte van de economische/ instrumentele benadering van onderwijs(kwaliteit) vorm krijgen? Bij een duiding van Bildung kan niet voorbij worden gegaan aan de filosofische/pedagogische historische wortels van het fenomeen; deze trekt een spoor vanaf de klassieke oudheid, Middel-eeuwen, de Verlichting, de Romantiek naar het heden. Met als doel bewuste persoonsvorming, zelfbegrip en gesitueerde leren denken en het komen tot ‘phronesis’ (praktische wijsheid) en verantwoordelijkheid betreft het zowel de individu als de maatschappij als geheel: Bildung gaat zowel over het bewaren van de cultuur, het revitaliseren en als het doorgeven daarvan. In Hoofdstuk 1 t/m 3 van mijn scriptie wordt aandacht besteed aan de (historische) definities, aspecten van Bildung, Ausbildung en wordt de visie op onderwijs en onderwijsvernieuwing belicht. Tegenover een moderne instrumentele opvatting van (‘evidence-based’) onderwijs - waarbij in plaats van een onafgeleide waarde, het onderwijs gezien wordt als instrument van en voor de samenleving- staat de substantiële visie en het normatieve karakter van goed (‘value-based’) onderwijs. Er is een trend waarneembaar van sturing en management primair gericht op een bijdrage aan economische groei en het zo efficiënt mogelijk realiseren van meetbare resultaten. Dit efficiëncy-denken heeft een verschuiving teweeggebracht in onderwijsbenadering weg van ‘het waartoe’ en moeilijk meetbare waarden ‘van waaruit’ wordt onderwezen en een gerichtheid op ‘het goede’ naar een instrumenteel denken over onderwijs. Dat terwijl de evidence based benadering zélf door educatieprofessionals nog maar lastig ter discussie is te stellen. De normatieve opvatting van onderwijs wordt door instrumentele rationaliteit en technische en bureaucratische vragen verdrongen. Bildung is in dat licht een interessant en belangrijk concept. De opkomst van het neoliberale denken is debet aan een zekere instrumentalisering van het onderwijs en een marginalisering van de onderwijspedagogiek. Een en ander heeft mijn inziens geresulteerd in een gebrek aan visie over onderwijsvernieuwing. Een belangrijke markteis verwijst naar Ausbildung en het zo vaardig mogelijk maken van economisch bruikbare burgers. Dohmen, Schreurs en Nussbaum en op een andere manier ook Charles Taylor, Gert Biesta en Ad Verbrugge zien een kaping van het debat door het neoliberaal marktdenken. Zij pleiten voor emancipatie of een anti-instrumentele benadering van onderwijs. In hoofdstuk 4 worden zes Bildungsdenkers in stelling gebracht die een pleidooi houden dat Bildung naast zelfbegrip, persoonlijke ontwikkeling ook gaat over je als mens (gesitueerd) te verhouden tot de traditie en de wereld. Vanuit de twee geprefereerde auteurs: Gadamer en Taylor is de verhouding tussen de twee behandelde paradigma’s: hermeneutische ‘interpretative turn’ en positivistische ‘empiricist turn’ het centrale wetenschapstheoretische onderwerp van dit laatste hoofdstuk. Bildung wordt daarbij voorgesteld als het vinden van een herijkte balans tussen deze twee paradigma’s. De scriptie doet een pleidooi voor het belang van de interpretatieve wetenschappen. Deze zijn bij Bildung minstens zo belangrijk als de positivistische natuurwetenschappen van meten is weten. Bildung, ook in de praktijk van het Delftse studentenpastoraat (MoTiv) sluit aan bij de ‘interpretative turn’, de narratieve benadering en studentbegeleiding door aandacht en ruimte voor het individuele levensverhaal en zelfbewuste persoonsvorming. Bildung is aldus zowel van belang voor het studentpastoraat als voor de klassieke humanistische werkvelden zoals Justitie, Defensie en de zorgsector
