Androgen Receptor CAG Repeats and Body Composition Among Ariaal Men
To determine the population variation in the androgen receptor (AR) and its association with body composition in a subsistence population, we sampled 87 settled and 65 nomadic males ages 20+ among the Ariaal of northern Kenya. Anthropometric measures included height, body mass index, fat-free mass (FFM), upper arm muscle plus bone area (AMPBA), % body fat (%BF), suprailliac skinfold (SISF), and waist-to-hip ratio. Salivary testosterone (T) was determined from both morning (Am T) and afternoon (Pm T) samples. Hair roots were obtained for genotyping AR CAG repeat length. AR CAG repeat length did not vary between the two sub-groups (overall value = 22.6 ± 3.1). Multiple regression models, controlling for age and residence, indicate that Pm T was positively associated with all measures of body composition. AR CAG repeat length was a significant positive predictor of height, FFM, %BF, SISF and waist circumference. There was a significant negative Pm T by AR CAG repeat length interaction in predicting all anthropometric measures but AMPBA. These findings provide evidence for population variation in AR CAG repeat length and suggest that both T and AR CAG length play a role in body composition in this extremely lean population.AnthropologyHuman Evolutionary Biolog
Does coevolution promote species richness in parasitic cuckoos?
Why some lineages have diversified into larger numbers of species than others is a fundamental but still relatively poorly understood aspect of the evolutionary process. Coevolution has been recognized as a potentially important engine of speciation, but has rarely been tested in a comparative framework. We use a comparative approach based on a complete phylogeny of all living cuckoos to test whether parasite–host coevolution is associated with patterns of cuckoo species richness. There are no clear differences between parental and parasitic cuckoos in the number of species per genus. However, a cladogenesis test shows that brood parasitism is associated with both significantly higher speciation and extinction rates. Furthermore, subspecies diversification rate estimates were over twice as high in parasitic cuckoos as in parental cuckoos. Among parasitic cuckoos, there is marked variation in the severity of the detrimental effects on host fitness; chicks of some cuckoo species are raised alongside the young of the host and others are more virulent, with the cuckoo chick ejecting or killing the eggs/young of the host. We show that cuckoos with a more virulent parasitic strategy have more recognized subspecies. In addition, cuckoo species with more recognized subspecies have more hosts. These results hold after controlling for confounding geographical effects such as range size and isolation in archipelagos. Although the power of our analyses is limited by the fact that brood parasitism evolved independently only three times in cuckoos, our results suggest that coevolutionary arms races with hosts have contributed to higher speciation and extinction rates in parasitic cuckoos
'Mindless markers of the nation': The routine flagging of nationhood across the visual environment
The visual environment has increasingly been used as a lens with which to understand wider processes of social and economic change with studies employing in-depth qualitative approaches to focus on, for example, gentrification or trans-national networks. This exploratory paper offers an alternative perspective by using a novel method, quantitative photo mapping, to examine the extent to which a particular socio-cultural marker, the nation, is ‘flagged’ across three contrasting sites in Britain. As a multi-national state with an increasingly diverse population, Britain offers a particularly fruitful case study, drawing in debates around devolution, European integration and Commonwealth migration. In contributing to wider debates around banal nationalism, the paper notes the extent to which nations are increasingly articulated through commerce, consumption and market exchange and the overall significance of everyday markers (signs, objects, infrastructure) in naturalising a national view of the world
Bragg spectroscopy of a cigar shaped Bose condensate in optical lattices
We study properties of excited states of an array of weakly coupled
quasi-two-dimensional Bose condensates by using the hydrodynamic theory. We
calculate multibranch Bogoliubov-Bloch spectrums and its corresponding
eigenfunctions. The spectrum of the axial excited states and its eigenfunctions
strongly depends on the coupling among various discrete radial modes within a
given symmetry. This mode coupling is due to the presence of radial trapping
potential. The multibranch nature of the Bogoliubov-Bloch spectrum and its
dependence on the mode-coupling can be realized by analyzing dynamic structure
factor and momentum transferred to the system in Bragg spectroscopy
experiments. We also study dynamic structure factor and momentum transferred to

Transmission Properties of the oscillating delta-function potential
We derive an exact expression for the transmission amplitude of a particle
moving through a harmonically driven delta-function potential by using the
method of continued-fractions within the framework of Floquet theory. We prove
that the transmission through this potential as a function of the incident
energy presents at most two real zeros, that its poles occur at energies
(), and that the
poles and zeros in the transmission amplitude come in pairs with the distance
between the zeros and the poles (and their residue) decreasing with increasing
energy of the incident particle. We also show the existence of non-resonant
"bands" in the transmission amplitude as a function of the strength of the

Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) UV aerosol index data analysis over the Arctic region for future data assimilation and climate forcing applications
Due to a lack of high-latitude ground-based and
satellite-based data from traditional passive- and active-based
measurements, the impact of aerosol particles on the Arctic region is one of
the least understood factors contributing to recent Arctic sea ice changes.
In this study, we investigated the feasibility of using the ultraviolet (UV)
aerosol index (AI) parameter from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), a
semi-quantitative aerosol parameter, for quantifying spatiotemporal changes
in UV-absorbing aerosols over the Arctic region. We found that OMI AI data
are affected by an additional row anomaly that is unflagged by the OMI quality
control flag and are systematically biased as functions of observing
conditions, such as azimuth angle, and certain surface types over the Arctic
region, resulting in an anomalous “ring” of climatologically high AI
centered at about 70∘ N, surrounding an area of low AI over the pole.
Two methods were developed in this study for quality-assuring the Arctic AI
data. Using quality-controlled OMI AI data from 2005 through 2020, we found
decreases in UV-absorbing aerosols in the spring months (April and May) over
much of the Arctic region and increases in UV-absorbing aerosols in the
summer months (June, July, and August) over northern Russia and northern
Canada. Additionally, we found significant increases in the frequency and
size of UV-absorbing aerosol events across the Arctic and high-Arctic (north
of 80∘ N) regions for the latter half of the study period
(2014–2020), driven primarily by a significant increase in boreal
biomass-burning plume coverage.</p
Phase II Open Label Study of Valproic Acid in Spinal Muscular Atrophy
UNLABELLED:Preliminary in vitro and in vivo studies with valproic acid (VPA) in cell lines and patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) demonstrate increased expression of SMN, supporting the possibility of therapeutic benefit. We performed an open label trial of VPA in 42 subjects with SMA to assess safety and explore potential outcome measures to help guide design of future controlled clinical trials. Subjects included 2 SMA type I ages 2-3 years, 29 SMA type II ages 2-14 years and 11 type III ages 2-31 years, recruited from a natural history study. VPA was well-tolerated and without evident hepatotoxicity. Carnitine depletion was frequent and temporally associated with increased weakness in two subjects. Exploratory outcome measures included assessment of gross motor function via the modified Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale (MHFMS), electrophysiologic measures of innervation including maximum ulnar compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitudes and motor unit number estimation (MUNE), body composition and bone density via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), and quantitative blood SMN mRNA levels. Clear decline in motor function occurred in several subjects in association with weight gain; mean fat mass increased without a corresponding increase in lean mass. We observed an increased mean score on the MHFMS scale in 27 subjects with SMA type II (p<or=0.001); however, significant improvement was almost entirely restricted to participants <5 years of age. Full length SMN levels were unchanged and Delta7SMN levels were significantly reduced for 2 of 3 treatment visits. In contrast, bone mineral density (p<or=0.0036) and maximum ulnar CMAP scores (p<or=0.0001) increased significantly. CONCLUSIONS:While VPA appears safe and well-tolerated in this initial pilot trial, these data suggest that weight gain and carnitine depletion are likely to be significant confounding factors in clinical trials. This study highlights potential strengths and limitations of various candidate outcome measures and underscores the need for additional controlled clinical trials with VPA targeting more restricted cohorts of subjects. SMA CARNI-VAL Trial Part I: Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trial of L-Carnitine and Valproic Acid in Spinal Muscular Atrophy
Valproic acid (VPA) has demonstrated potential as a therapeutic candidate for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in vitro and in vivo.Two cohorts of subjects were enrolled in the SMA CARNIVAL TRIAL, a non-ambulatory group of "sitters" (cohort 1) and an ambulatory group of "walkers" (cohort 2). Here, we present results for cohort 1: a multicenter phase II randomized double-blind intention-to-treat protocol in non-ambulatory SMA subjects 2-8 years of age. Sixty-one subjects were randomized 1:1 to placebo or treatment for the first six months; all received active treatment the subsequent six months. The primary outcome was change in the modified Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale (MHFMS) score following six months of treatment. Secondary outcomes included safety and adverse event data, and change in MHFMS score for twelve versus six months of active treatment, body composition, quantitative SMN mRNA levels, maximum ulnar CMAP amplitudes, myometry and PFT measures.At 6 months, there was no difference in change from the baseline MHFMS score between treatment and placebo groups (difference = 0.643, 95% CI = -1.22-2.51). Adverse events occurred in >80% of subjects and were more common in the treatment group. Excessive weight gain was the most frequent drug-related adverse event, and increased fat mass was negatively related to change in MHFMS values (p = 0.0409). Post-hoc analysis found that children ages two to three years that received 12 months treatment, when adjusted for baseline weight, had significantly improved MHFMS scores (p = 0.03) compared to those who received placebo the first six months. A linear regression analysis limited to the influence of age demonstrates young age as a significant factor in improved MHFMS scores (p = 0.007).This study demonstrated no benefit from six months treatment with VPA and L-carnitine in a young non-ambulatory cohort of subjects with SMA. Weight gain, age and treatment duration were significant confounding variables that should be considered in the design of future trials.Clinicaltrials.gov NCT00227266
Low-Lying Excited States and Low-Temperature Properties of an Alternating Spin-1 / Spin-1/2 Chain : A DMRG study
We report spin wave and DMRG studies of the ground and low-lying excited
states of uniform and dimerized alternating spin chains. The DMRG procedure is
also employed to obtain low-temperature thermodynamic properties of the system.
The ground state of a 2N spin system with spin-1 and spin-1/2 alternating from
site to site and interacting via an antiferromagnetic exchange is found to be
ferrimagnetic with total spin from both DMRG and spin wave analysis.
Both the studies also show that there is a gapless excitation to a state with
spin and a gapped excitation to a state with spin .
Surprisingly, the correlation length in the ground state is found to be very
small from both the studies for this gapless system. For this very reason, we
show that the ground state can be described by a variational ``ansatz'' of the
product type. DMRG analysis shows that the chain is susceptible to a
conditional spin-Peierls' instability. The DMRG studies of magnetization,
magnetic susceptibility () and specific heat show strong magnetic-field
dependence. The product shows a minimum as a function of
temperature() at low-magnetic fields and the minimum vanishes at
high-magnetic fields. This low-field behaviour is in agreement with earlier
experimental observations. The specific heat shows a maximum as a function of
temperature and the height of the maximum increases sharply at high magnetic
fields. It is hoped that these studies will motivate experimental studies at
