A Numerical Minimization Scheme for the Complex Helmholtz Equation
We use the work of Milton, Seppecher, and Bouchitt\'{e} on variational
principles for waves in lossy media to formulate a finite element method for
solving the complex Helmholtz equation that is based entirely on minimization.
In particular, this method results in a finite element matrix that is symmetric
positive-definite and therefore simple iterative descent methods and
preconditioning can be used to solve the resulting system of equations. We also
derive an error bound for the method and illustrate the method with numerical
experiments.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure
Thermodielectric radiometer
Radiometer measures microsecond pulses of radiant flux in the presence of electromagnetic noise. It consists of a charged capacitor that delivers a voltage pulse proportional to the thermally induced depolarization of its polymeric dielectric
Airborne tracking sunphotometer apparatus and system
An airborne tracking Sun photometer apparatus has a rotatable dome. An azimuth drive motor is connected to rotate the dome. The dome has an equatorial slot. A cylindrical housing is pivotally mounted inside the dome at the equatorial slot. A photometer is mounted in the housing to move in the equatorial slot as the housing pivots. The photometer has an end facing from the slot with an optical flat transparent window. An elevation drive motor is connected to pivot the cylindrical housing. The rotatable dome is mounted in the bulkhead of an aircraft to extend from the interior of the aircraft. A Sun sensor causes the photometer to track the Sun automatically. Alternatively, the photometer may be oriented manually or by computer
A foot core intervention in Netballers
This presentation presented data from Terrina Chapman's Master's thesis completed in 2018, regarding the effect of a 6-week foot core intervention on junior netballers
How costly is sustained low inflation for the U.S. economy?
The authors study the welfare cost of inflation in a general equilibrium life-cycle model that includes households that live for many periods, production and capital, simple monetary and financial sectors, and a fairly elaborate government sector. The government’s taxation of capital income is not indexed for inflation. They find that a plausibly calibrated version of this model has a steady state that matches a variety of facts about the postwar U.S. economy. They use the model to estimate the welfare cost of permanent, policy-induced changes in the inflation rate and find that most of the costs of inflation are direct and indirect consequences of the fact that inflation increases the effective tax rate on capital income. The cost estimates are an order of magnitude larger than other estimates in the literature.Economic conditions - United States ; Inflation (Finance)
Granulin Knock Out Zebrafish Lack Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration and Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis Pathology
Loss of function mutations in granulin (GRN) are linked to two distinct neurological disorders, frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) and neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL). It is so far unknown how a complete loss of GRN in NCL and partial loss of GRN in FTLD can result in such distinct diseases. In zebrafish, there are two GRN homologues, Granulin A (Grna) and Granulin B (Grnb). We have generated stable Grna and Grnb loss of function zebrafish mutants by zinc finger nuclease mediated genome editing. Surprisingly, the grna and grnb single and double mutants display neither spinal motor neuron axonopathies nor a reduced number of myogenic progenitor cells as previously reported for Grna and Grnb knock down embryos. Additionally, grna-/-;grnb-/- double mutants have no obvious FTLD- and NCL-related biochemical and neuropathological phenotypes. Taken together, the Grna and Grnb single and double knock out zebrafish lack any obvious morphological, pathological and biochemical phenotypes. Loss of zebrafish Grna and Grnb might therefore either be fully compensated or only become symptomatic upon additional challenge
