    R-modes in the ocean of a magnetic neutron star

    We study the dynamics of r-modes in the ocean of a magnetic neutron star. We modeled the star's ocean with a spherical rotating thin shell and assumed that the magnetic field symmetry axis is not aligned to the shell's spin axis. In the magnetohydrodynamic approximation, we calculate the frequency of ℓ=m\ell=m r-modes in the shell of an incompressible fluid. Different r-modes with ℓ\ell and ℓ±2\ell\pm2 are coupled by the {\it inclined} magnetic field. Kinematical secular effects for the motion of a fluid element in the shell undergoing ℓ=m=2\ell=m=2 r-mode are studied. The magnetic corrected drift velocity of a given fluid element undergoing the ℓ=m\ell=m r-mode oscillations is obtained. The magnetic field increases the magnitude of the fluid drift produced by the r-mode drift velocity, the high-ℓ\ell modes in the ocean fluid will damp faster than the low-ℓ\ell ones.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures, to appear in ApJ, v574 n2 August 1, 2002 issu

    We have shown that the partition function of the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process with open boundaries in a sublattice-parallel updating scheme is equal to that of a two-dimensional one-transit walk model defined on a diagonally rotated square lattice.     Rotation-Invariant Synthetic Discriminant Function Filter for Pattern Recognition

    The ring synthetic discriminant function (RSDF) filter for rotation-invariant response is discussed for pattern recognition. This method uses one half of a slice of the Fourier transform of the object to generate the transfer function of the filter. This is accomplished by rotating the one half of a slice in the Fourier domain through 2Ď€ rad about the zero-frequency point of the Fourier plane. This filter has the advantage of always matching at least one half of a slice of the Fourier transform of any rotation of the image. An analytical discussion of the filter construction and correlation results are presented along with simulated correlation results for a particular target image. These results and established metrics are used for comparison with benchmark algorithms

    Property (RD) for Hecke pairs

    As the first step towards developing noncommutative geometry over Hecke C*-algebras, we study property (RD) (Rapid Decay) for Hecke pairs. When the subgroup H in a Hecke pair (G,H) is finite, we show that the Hecke pair (G,H) has (RD) if and only if G has (RD). This provides us with a family of examples of Hecke pairs with property (RD). We also adapt Paul Jolissant's works in 1989 to the setting of Hecke C*-algebras and show that when a Hecke pair (G,H) has property (RD), the algebra of rapidly decreasing functions on the set of double cosets is closed under holomorphic functional calculus of the associated (reduced) Hecke C*-algebra.     Preparation of Nano-Size Al-Promoted Sulfated Zirconia and the Impact of Calcination Temperature on Its Catalytic Activity

    Solvent-free technique was employed in this work in order to assess the influence of the calcination temperature on the activity of Al-promoted sulfated zirconia. The catalyst was analyzed by XRD and IR-spectrum method, and catalytic activity was examined by esterification reaction of oleic acid. XRD analysis revealed that a decline in the percentage of tetragonal phases of zirconia was observed by increasing the calcination temperature from 500 to 900 °C. In addition, a reduction of sulfate groups as SO42– on zirconia surface was observed. As a consequence, a decline in Brønsted sites with calcinationtemperature enhancement also prevailed. Therefore, the size of Al-promoted sulfated zirconia particles was increased accordingly. On the other hand, with the aluminum sulfate loading, the amount of sulfate ions on Al-promoted sulfated zirconia surface was enhanced and a reduction in particle size of Al2O3/S-ZrO2 was also observed, as compared to non-promoted. The result of this study revealed that an increase of sulfate and alumina groups causes a raise in the acidity of catalyst. Furthermore, the calcined Al-promoted and non-promoted sulfated zirconia would convert 96.10 % and 89.36 % of oleic acid to biodiesel, respectively. Therefore, Al2O3/S-ZrO2 as a catalyst exhibits a higher activity than S-ZrO2

    Effect of Calcination Temperature on Catalytic Activity of Synthesis SrO/S-ZrO2 by Solvent-free Method in Esterification of Oleic Acid

    Currently, the major concern in production of biodiesel fuel is to exploit new catalysts with the optimal conditions. In this study, the effect of calcination temperature on the synthesis of 20 mol % SrO/S-ZrO2 was examined by solvent-free method. Moreover, the ability of the catalyst for esterification reaction of oleic acid with methanol was also assessed. To obtain this objective, X-ray diffraction and infra-red spectroscopy method was employed to characterize the structure of the catalysts. The results of this study reveal that the calcined strontium oxide promoted sulfated zirconia at 500 °C has the highest percentage of tetragonal phases of zirconia. It has also been demonstrated that owing to the high percentage of the tetragonal phases of zirconia and the acidity of the catalyst, conversion of oleic acid to fatty acids methyl esters (i.e., FAME) could be enhanced from 88.36 % to 91.13 %. Moreover, it has also been shown that 20 mol % SrO/S-ZrO2 exhibits higher activity in comparison with S-ZrO2 at 500 °C in esterification reaction due to the presence more sulfate ions and higher activity of strontium ions

    Preparation of Supported Nanosized Sulfated Zirconia by Strontia and Assessment of Its Activities in the Esterification of Oleic Acid

    The aim of this study was to examine a new nanocatalyst of SrO/S-ZrO2 in esterification reaction and the optimum value of strontia loading over the sulfated zirconia. The sulfated zirconia was supported with different molar ratios of strontia in the range of 0.0–0.30, using the solvent-free method. The samples were characterized using XRD, FT-IR, BET and TEM analysis and their activity were investigated in esterification reaction of oleic acid. The findings of this study revealed that 25 mol % SrO/S-ZrO2 had the highest yield in the esterification reaction. It was also concluded that strontia-supported sulfated zirconia could improve the low reusability of the catalyst. Furthermore, 95 % conversion was also obtained at optimized conditions (i.e., 100 °C, 2 wt. % of catalyst, 6:1 molar ratio of methanol/oleic acid and for a period of 30 minutes)

    Boundary Conditions for Elastohydrodynamics of Circular Point Contacts

    The paper presents the solution of an elastohydrodynamic point contact condition using inlet and outlet lubricant entrainment with partial counter-flow. The inlet and outlet boundaries are determined using potential flow analysis for the pure rolling of contiguous surfaces. This shows that Swift–Stieber boundary conditions best conform to the observed partial counter-flow at the inlet conjunction, satisfying the compatibility condition. For the outlet region, the same is true when Prandtl–Hopkins boundary conditions are employed. Using these boundary conditions, the predictions conform closely to the measured pressure distribution using a deposited pressure-sensitive micro-transducer in a ball-to-flat race contact. Furthermore, the predicted conjunctional shape closely conforms to the often observed characteristic keyhole conjunction through optical interferometry. The combined numerical–experimental analysis with realistic boundary conditions described here has not hitherto been reported in the literature
